Atari re-released its classic arcade game Missile Command as a free, multiplayer browser game Thurdsay.
The new edition of the game was created by social gaming outfit OMGPOP. The fresh take on Missile Command can be played at OMGPOP's website or via its own dedicated site, where you'll find lots of information about the history of the game. Either way, the game has hooks in it that connect you to OMGPOP's social network service and all the achievements and messaging that comes with it.
This is a great looking pair of classics mini cases. New Wave’s 1/6-scale* Missile Command x RepliCade* mini arcade cabinets are now available for purchase on NewWaveToys.com.
Earlier this year it was announced that Atari were set to enter Hollywood with new films based on two of their most popular and historic franchises – Asteroids and Missile Command. Now it's been revealed that are also helping to produce two new TV shows based on their classic franchises.
Carl Williams writes, "Today, we don’t really have arcades anymore. Rewind a good 35 to 40 years or so and arcades were the place to be if you were a gamer. Arcades were still rocking and these new electronic games were taking over from pinball and games of skill (skee ball and the like- those ticket games). One title that played off the fear of the time (nuclear war with Russia for you young whippersnappers) was Missile Command. The trackball controls were unique against the myriad of other arcade games coming out at the time (though some did use a similar setup) and the premise was just right."
