Heavy Rain director: "I don't want players to have fun"

RelyonHorror.com writes: "Spiegel recently published an interview with Heavy Rain director David Cage. An interesting bit was revealed when he was confronted with the fact that Heavy Rain's levels are so nightmareish:

"I don't even want the players to have fun when playing. There are so many games that revolve arround fun, this is getting boring. I want the players to live through emotions. I've built the game like an emotional rollercoaster ride."

You've failed, Mr. Cage. I had a lot of fun.

thorstein5224d ago

That is what he means. It is enjoyable, but it doesn't have to be l o l fun.

Aquarius5224d ago (Edited 5224d ago )

o.k. so I've been reading a few comments saying Heavy Rain has a number of glitches that's game-breaking.

I was happy & lucky to not encounter any of these except for slight screen-tearing and the jittering of the characters but HEAVY RAIN CAN BE MISTAKEN FOR SOMETHING ON TV, REAL LIFE, LITERALLY! ( people who are saying Heavy Rain environments look rubbish and try and bring up UC2 to say it looks better don't know what the fock they are talking about, afterall to play UC2 you need a PS3 which you's lot don't have :P )

end rant/

I turned my PS3 on today to jump back into Heavy Rain pressed continue and the PS3 locked up.
Tried everything:

Sometimes the HD signal will just cut out-turned off tv /turned back on tv
Switched off PS3/Switched PS3 back on
Manually selected the chapter Face to Face with Scott Shelby-his face didn't appear ( loading ) only a blank screen
Checked to see if the files were corrupted they were none
Deleted/Re-installed software update

Has anyone else had this same problem at Chapter Face to Face :*(
It freezes without fail everytime :*(

This game is like being in a great movie and feeling what the characters feel. AMAZING! I just finished it last night; I can't wait to play it again and make new decisions.

Anyone know where to get the Origami instructions from the initial load screen ?

ZombieNinjaPanda5224d ago

Misleading title 101:

Only post half of what someone says to make it seem bad.

FACTUAL evidence5224d ago

the director's attempt Failed...I had a blast! Even my little sister had fun...lmao.

Jinxstar5224d ago

Yeah me and my girlfriend are having a blast playing the game. not giving this site any hits FTW!

sikbeta5224d ago

DC Knows Best, The man is talking about having "fun" in the typical way, like shooting everything or in a Game like LBP, The Game is Really Good

Gamers FTW!!!

erathaol5224d ago

Typically the expression used in this scenario would be, "Don't hate the player, hate the game." but Heavy Rain is only worthy of garnering love/respect. Cage is taking a stance that games need to realize they can take too, that not everything has to be about shooting/slashing, that there is more that can be done and should be done. In other words people need to start stepping up their game.

JsonHenry5224d ago

I thought that the "game" was fun enough.

Torkith5224d ago

Yeah, title is very misleading...

"I don't even want the players to have fun when playing. There are so many games that revolve around fun, this is getting boring. I want the players to live through emotions. I've built the game like an emotional rollercoaster ride."

He's interested in evoking emotion more than creating a "fun" experience for the user.

Lifendz5224d ago

but I don't know if it was fun. I think it was just the constant tension the game gives you after a certain point. It was a thrill ride for me. Hard to find an analogy for it. I can see what the director is saying though. Guess it all comes down to how you define fun.

What isn't open for the debate is how entertaining this game is. Just found out who the killer is and I can't wait to see how it wraps up.

Saaking5224d ago

He succeeded in creating an emotional game... that's a LOT of fun. Even after you finish it, you'll come back for more just to try and see all the different possible outcomes. I'm on my third play through of the game and I've also replayed some of the chapters. It's awesome.

harrisk9545224d ago

Some of the dialogue (both between characters and in the characters' thoughts) was a little stilted and corny at times and the story had some plot holes depending on how you played through... but, the first time through the game (NO SPOILERS), I was shocked at the ending and just sat there with my jaw open for a few minutes because I couldn't believe what I was seeing on my screen... It made me immediately want to pick up the controller and see the other ways the story could go...

I can't think of any other game that made me feel that way.

edwineverready5224d ago

Had the same thing. Switch your ps3 of then switch it of in the back. switch it back on and take out the disk put the disk back in and start the game. press continue and it should work it did for me.

N4BmpS5224d ago

Poor Choice of Words Mr. Cage.

Ravage275223d ago (Edited 5223d ago )

looking back over the years, all my favourite games are those that focus less on the fun factor and more on the experience. Yea i do enjoy the occasional stupidly fun game, but it will be quickly forgotten the moment something better comes along. They certainly don't linger in my memories for long, and i definitely don't talk about them much.

FF7,FF8,LoD,KH2,ICO,GOW1& 2,MGS4,Demon's Souls,UC2,HR...these games are very memorable and timeless. My friends and I can talk about them for hours, and they are the reasons why i play games in the first place.

Typical splice an (out of context) excerpt from a larger and more revealing interview for hits.

I'm getting less and less interested in what the media has to say. It's all just different shades of b.s..

DaMa5224d ago

I simply didn't want to translate the whole interview so i just picked out this part, the rest isn't that much worth of a mentioning anyway.

Gigalol5224d ago

I don't buy your game, moron.

Karooo5224d ago

the game is very serious, emotional.

XxDeathDoctorxX5224d ago

u cant u bot ur system couldnt handle it u xbot go kill ur self already

The Wood5224d ago (Edited 5224d ago )

some parts left me a little stressed.....almost like i was concentrating too hard on the unknown

@Chris399

i only read the headline.....that was all i needed because i could understand its point. Losing a kid should never be fun. ill go read the rest now....maybe

Please stop comparing video games to movies

"Many video games catch not only great commercial attention but remarkable critical attention as well. We have seen games like Heavy Rain, The Last of Us Part II, and even entries in the Metal Gear series described as fantastic interactive experiences, even heralded in the same way as Hollywood's greatest films.

I would suggest that not only is this an unfair comparison but also a harmful one. Video games, by their very nature, are an intricately different medium and should be weighed against one another rather than another form of media," Phillip writes for GF365.

Yes, please stop. They're better than most hollywood drivel nowadays.

BLAKHOODe1310d ago

I think Hollywood films will becoming increasingly more like video games in the future, especially as the world embraces the "new normal" from the pandemic. It makes sense, as games like Spider-Man: Miles Morales showcase just how realistically we're reaching in graphical capabilities, as well as showcase extreme action sequences in spectacular ways. And as time goes by, it'll get easier and cheaper to produce such "art", as well as create new star "actors" that never age, never die, never complain, never gets involved in scandals, etc. Technology is amazing and we're only just getting a taste of what it'll eventually be.

sourOG1310d ago

No. Some games are like movies.

medman1309d ago (Edited 1309d ago )

No. For the money spent, a quality game provides far more entertainment value than a quality movie. Especially when looking at what is going on in the world, and how a studio can attempt to pilfer from consumers by charging 30 dollars for Mulan via streaming. Ridiculous. There is no comparison....games all day.

Have you played Detroit? While it’s my personal favorite, I fully understand many preferring Heavy Rain more. I’m glad you enjoyed Heavy Rain too.

bouzebbal1467d ago

def. one of my top 3 best experiences on PS3

ClayRules20121467d ago

bouzebbal

That’s awesome to hear! What’re the other 2 best experiences?

akaFullMetal1467d ago

Great game, need to get started on Detroit soon.

ClayRules20121467d ago

Glad you enjoyed the game! Yes, Detroit is a masterpiece of a game, and their best work to date “in my opinion”

ClayRules20121467d ago

Wow, 10 years...and yet, still one of the best/most emotional/thrilling gaming experiences I’ve ever had.

So grateful to Sony for believing in Quantic Dream’s vision for this game, and giving them a chance. I’ll never forget David Cage saying “We want to challenge the player, but not with the controller, but mentally, with their decisions of “How far would you go to save someone you love” Well, they broke my emotional gamer heart lol.

My teenage son refuses to play this game, because I’ve told him in little detail the emotional impact it had on me all those years ago. Maybe one day he will.

Z5011467d ago

Still have my origami crane they teach you how to make when you're installing for the first time.

C-H-E-F1467d ago

it's been 10 years? wow, that was so fast, I feel like this console gen went fast as well although it hasn't. I really look forward to the PS5 this holiday season though.
