The real reason developers wont stray from Xbox 360
No matter your view on gaming: art, hobby, leisure activity, or lifestyle….. It’s a business. Businesses are run on the sole objective of making money. How else could you compare a game like ODST with Uncharted 2 other than sales parity? In this generation of consoles the Nintendo Wii holds a landslide lead over both the Xbox 360 (2nd) and Playstation 3 (3rd) in console sales as well as software sales. In the battle for last place, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 are fighting against each other for exclusive titles, downloadable content, and sales of multi platform titles.
With talk in the gaming world of developers like Valve and Epic wanting to move into making games for a new system, it begs the question: why would they? With the system architecture of consoles being so much different, do the dismal sales numbers of PS3 games even make it worth their while? The answer is obviously not, if it was, it would already be happening.
In looking at the multiplatform title successes of both consoles, the 360 holds a 2-1 lead in terms of sales. Even in a game that was originally exclusive to Sony, example: The GTA series, Microsoft sold twice as many copies as Sony. So where does the enticement for multiplatform developers to spend extra time on a PS3 version of the game come from ? It doesn’t , most multi platform games are developed for the Xbox 360 and ported to PS3 likely for the reasons listed above.
