Kotaku: Alan Wake Preview: The First Full Episode

Kotaku: As for graphics, well, it's hard to say if the darkness enshrouding many of the games in the genre excused less than industry-leading graphics or if it is smaller development teams, not armed with the resources to make industry-leading graphics that turned to the horror genre. Whatever the case, it is rare to see a game in the dark-and-creepy category that could be a Best Graphics candidate, but Alan Wake, like EA's Dead Space before it, represents a pleasant exception.

Looks fantastic, reminds me very much of Siren: Blood Curse, with obviously far superior graphics and sans the true horror of playing as a defenseless little girl . Shame Siren sold so poorly, I would have loved a sequel.

"Whatever the case, it is rare to see a game in the dark-and-creepy category that could be a Best Graphics candidate, but Alan Wake, like EA's Dead Space before it, represents a pleasant exception."
----I really like how he goes on to say that the environment/Pacific Northwest in Alan Wake looks magnificent rendered in real and spooky detail in the episode he played.

"As Alan ran into a house for refuge, I noticed it was full of details, chairs and TVs and wall-hangings, meeting my newfound Uncharted 2 standard of amount of stuff I think a developer can render in a realistic indoors space."
----I said it before and looking at the most recent vid its great to see Remedy took their time to really show what 360 is capable of.

----Most importantly though, it sounds like a helluva game to play=
"The first half of the episode, which would last about an hour, was easy. The second half was tough. Enemies are numerous and relentless. On some walls my flashlight revealed arrows which pointed to hidden caches of weapons or batteries (also product-placed, Energizer brand). There are pages of a novel seemingly written by Alan scattered in the level. Collecting them tells a story. Everything, including the arrows, has a narrative explanation, if players dig for it, the developers told me. But I was busy trying to survive."

I really like the concept of a peaceful town during the day and a horror town at night.

The gameplay I've seen so far does look very, very nice.

As a PS3 only owner, I'm sorry I won't get to play this one (at least not right away). **Edit: to clarify, meaning I might get to play it on an Xbox360 one day, NOT that it'll come to the PS3.**

The gameplay, story line, and the overall vibe of the game is right up my alley. I think this should be a really great game and I hope it does well.

Wow... I didn't die or anything typing that. :D

I think Alan Wake is on top but could be fighting the top spot with later on with Halo Reach and Metro 2033. With other games coming in close like Brink and Splinter Cell.

"The rest of this first chapter in the Alan Wake saga is filled with action. There are still plot twists to uncover, characters to meet, and a lot more exposition – none of which I'll spoil here – but the emphasis is on combat and exploration with a few light puzzles tossed in for good measure."

"What consistently impressed me about Alan Wake is how well it is constructed. The visuals are striking, the sound effects and music are fantastic, and the art style is unique enough to make this game stand out from the pack. But it is the clever writing and well-woven themes that made my time with the game so memorable. Alan Wake constantly toys with the player, making them question what is real and what is a nightmare."

Metro 2033

360 detail and lighting is really starting to take off, the devs must be learning multi thread/core development a lot more.

I'm convinced this is a day one for me. I was actually not too hyped for this game until post E3 2009.

BeaArthur5595d ago

Yeah this one wasn't on my radar until recently. Although until recently there hasn't been a ton of information about it either.

Kind of a goody story...

On a serious note, that is why I try activating gift cards asap. It's happened to me where the store didnt scan it right where the card was unusuable. Happened at Wally World.

gigoran8424d ago

wait, that place is real? national lampoon wasn't kidding?

Tacoboto423d ago

I just bought two of the MonsterVerse Godzilla movies on 4K - both had digital copies expiring in 2023. Both were actually expired.

I'd be surprised but it's WB, of course they'd actually expire them

Knightofelemia424d ago

Usually most of those redemption card have an expiry date on them. If they expired all buyer did was buy recycled paper. And some of those codes are country locked to certain countries. I buy a card from the States I can't use it in Canada.

Chocoburger424d ago

Dumb and silly story. She wasted her money for no reason.

Is it really that hard to go to Steam or GOG. She spent $240, when its currently 70% off on GOG, and only costs $4.49.

Gee, I wonder, should I spend $240 on eBay, or $4.49 on GOG? 🙄

Rynxie424d ago

Most likely she wanted to resell a few or most of them. However, it was a too good to be true situation.

Profchaos424d ago

So in short she paid $240.00 assuming usd for a bunch on unactivated game codes.

I still don't understand why I guess cause there's not a physical version and she wanted something for a collection or art project.

Rynxie424d ago

No, most likely to resell. However, she ended up getting screwed.

Asplundh424d ago

This is Alan Wake 1, it had physical copies.

A thermos is upending the Alan Wake community

Remedy has Alan Wake merch on sale, including a pretty blue thermos. Unfortunately, things haven’t gone according to plan, and many players who want a thermos find themselves without one, though it does appear that Remedy is attempting to fix things. Nevertheless, it has resulted in a lot of upset, illustrating just how much the thermos means to Alan Wake fans.
