Play.TM | Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers Review

There's little on show in Crystal Bearers that's worth recommending and if this is Square Enix's way of showing Wii owners a little Final Fantasy love as PS3 and Xbox 360 gamers prepare to devour Final Fantasy XIII, it's only likely to illicit further disgruntlement. An endlessly contrived core adventure filled with dislikeable characters, non-existent evolution, and a promising Wii Remote battle mechanic ruined by shoddy camera control combine to send Crystal Bearers to a decidedly deserved demise at the bottom of the bargain bin. Fish it out at your peril.

SpoonyRedMage5579d ago (Edited 5579d ago )

Wow... what a bullshit review. A completely terrible review... in no way is Crystal Bearers a rehash... WTF is generic environmental design? "Oh sh*t forests are in this game too!". and dear god apparently if a character has hair he's androgynous, what a load of crap.

'hunt for mysterious crystal shards to save the world'

...except that only drives the plot for like... two minutes... it's a subplot.

'camera isn't intuitive and must be controlled at all times via the Remote's directional pad.'

Actually it moves on it's own and there's an option to make it track Layle more.... so yeah, the camera isn't great but that's untrue.

'unpleasant jittery on-screen adjustments that further damage suspension of disbelief.'

...what? that's a complaint that can be applied to pretty much any part of gameplay that isn't analogous to the on screen action or even stuff like health bars...

'Disappointment also awaits players expecting to feast upon an epic adventure centred on massively oversized swords, a never-ending supply of character upgrades and outrageous magic spells.'

So wait is this a rehash like you were claiming before or not? Way to contradict yourself.

'Sadly, however, the accumulated effects are rarely worth the expended effort and - if truth be told - Layle can move through much of the game using little more than the standard pick-it-up-and-chuck-it approach.'

Really because that strategy becomes useless by the time you get to High Tide Cove and relying on the strategy means you can never beat half of the monsters.

'As the hapless story of Crystal Bearers unfolds in its own befuddled way, initial bouts of curious exploration across the overworld and through uncovered enclaves soon give way to forehead-smacking fetch quests'

That's funny because there isn't any fetch quests... not one... or has the meaning of fetch quest changed? Now it apparently means when you have to go somewhere.

' And that variety is guaranteed - if your idea of variety is arbitrarily waggling the Wii Remote to unseat pursuing enemies from their Chocobo mounts or holding down the trigger button to pepper flying beasts with an inexhaustible storm of hot lead.'

Compared to what, repeatedly mining planets pointlessly? Oh yes, I am comparing it to Mass Effect 2, a comparison he made first... and what was is variety now? apparently changes in gameplay doesn't constitute variety now.

'Needless to say, the sporadic mini-games largely fail in their attempts to use the Wii Remote's functionality to help plug the gaping hole left by the rest of the game's stark inadequacies.'

Actually no, there is a need to say, it's your job and it'd be nice if you provided evidence for your frankly unfounded assertion because using the pointer to aim with a gun just doesn't work or doesn't make sense...(sarcasm if you can't tell).

'An endlessly contrived core adventure filled with dislikeable characters, non-existent evolution'

dislikeable isn't a word. Great writing. The only UNlikeable character is Belle... and guess what, you're not meant to like her...

How is it contrived?

non-existent evolution.... so the gameplay stays the same... OMFG... like the majority of games or that Layle doesn't get more powerful? oh wait, yes he does if you actually play the game.

'I wonder, can you guess which expletive I would have used in my single-word review? Answers on a postcard to...'

Probably the same word I'd use to describe your review?

ChickeyCantor5579d ago

Lets face it, FF:CCB wont be as popular as you and i wanted it to be, i still have to play it. However. Its not like these reviews will have any effect on sales.

The game is already received as Mediocre, but i wont judge until i play it myself. But so far I like what I have seen.

(wii is kaput...YAAAAAAAY)

SpoonyRedMage5579d ago

Well no, these later reviews won't have any affect because it's already been crapped on unfairly but it doesn't excuse the fact that the reviews are largely terrible, neglecting the majority of the content and being factually incorrect.

It practically sickens me that an actual, serious, quality effort from a third party is getting crapped on and by some reviewers singled out(like complaining that the chocobos run away when you get off them, it happens in all FFs) whilst according to reviewers Dead Space: Extraction and Madworld as used as examples of quality Wii games.

... can't wait for this to be inevitably used as evidence that third party games don't sell on the Wii. The direct comparison to FFXIII will be lots of fun.

ChickeyCantor5579d ago

I completely understand your frustration, its just that we cant turn this sh/t around.

Perhaps if you directly contact these reviewers to give a second opinion, other than that you will just piss yourself off.

SpoonyRedMage5579d ago

Yer, I guess you're right. Probably the best I can do is a user review(which I was planning on doing anyway).

...considering the reviewers couldn't be bothered to review it properly the first time around I doubt asking for a second opinion would get anywhere....

hatchimatchi5579d ago

I too feel your frustration, White Knight Chronicles is getting dumped on like it's the worst game ever but it's actually a really fun/polished game.

Crystal Bearers looks really interesting. I wanna get it but where I live there are no rental shops. Maybe with my tax returns i'll drop the money on this.

Also, I think it's funny too that madworld and dead space: extraction are considered the "quality" 3rd party titles. Both those games are pretty much worthless imo.

20 Cheap Wii Games to Play On Your Wii U For $20 or Less

SuperPhillip Central writes, "Currently, Wii U owners don't have a lot to play as of right now. However, the Wii U does feature something that makes it still worthy to own for those who missed out on the awesome Wii back catalog of games. A common criticism among those who are ignorant is that the Wii has few games worth playing. This assumption is most definitely false, as evident by our list of fifty of the best Wii games. That said, while you wait for some titles to finally launch on the Wii U, why not use the system's backwards compatibility to play some Wii titles that you may have missed out on? Better yet, how about you check out this list of twenty Wii games that are available for $20 or less? We could all use some financial assistance, especially in this economy, so why not be a bit frugal in our purchases? That is exactly what this list is for. If you missed out on the Wii for any reason, and you are looking for something to play on your Wii U, this list is for you!"

Not to excuse the software drought the Wii U has been in for the past couple of months, but backwards compatibility is indeed good for something in this regard.

Monster Hunter Tri really shouldn't be on this list. 3 Ultimate comes out THIS month. Unless of course you just want a cheap Monster Hunter game; in which case, knock yourself out.

Kinda saddened that Muramasas: The Demon Blade was not listed. That one was pretty cheap when I nabbed it off of Amazon around half a year ago.

darthv724466d ago

but really, the games dont have to be cheap to be fun to play on the wii-u. Metroid prime trilogy, yeah that one is pricy but it is still fun to play.

I'd say just about any game that was fun to play on the wii would be equally fun to play on the wii-u. I unhooked the wii when the wii-u was purchased. i like that the wii-u and my tv display wii games in 720p even though the games arent native.

The hdmi makes wii games look better and crisper than component on the wii. Some of the more recent wii games i got for cheap were:

kirby epic yarn, tatsunoko vs capcom, samurai shodown anthology, king of fighters orochi saga, the conduit....all of which i paid no more than $20 ea (kirby was $10).

Phil324466d ago

Oh, yes, of course. This article wasn't meant to be saying that a game must be cheap to be fun. Sorry if that message was somehow presented to you or anyone else.

DarkBlood4466d ago

agreed its best to get them wii games *like how im doing now* becuase give it a few more years it may be come nonexistent in regular stores.

but perhaps not with the wiiu being backwards compatible n all

neogeo4466d ago

Wii was the ps2 of net gen. Lots of shovelware but also some great gems

ISNeko4466d ago

Its funny that people bitch and moan about backwards compatibility, when in this case the players could fill the Wii U "drought" with Wii games we all know were overlooked by most.

mydyingparadiselost4465d ago

Just picked up Trauma Center Second Opinion for 5 bucks. Do yourself a favor and get a copy NOW. :]

TheDivine4465d ago

Well might not be all under 20 but I'd recommend

The Last Story (30 brand new)
Xenoblade ( get lucky at random GameStop 50)
New Donkey Kong Country
Pikmin 1 & 2
Okami
Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn (50ish but worth every penny)
Pandoras Tower (new for 40 launching in April)
Metroid Prime Trilogy ( pretty rare these days unforunately)
Zelda Twighlight Princess (20 or less)
Zelda Skyward Sword (20 new at best buy)
Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 (cheap)
MH Tri (under 20)
Fragile Dreams (under 20)
Arc Rise Fantasia (30)
Tales of Symphonia DotNW (20ish)
Sin and Punishment (10 or less)
Metroid Other M 10ish and one of my fav wii games ever, really underrated)
Exc exc

Truth be told wii had one of the best library's of the 3 consoles last gen. It just didnt have multiplats but what's wrong with nearly all exclusives? Lots to love. I'm still playing GameCube games to this day. Matter of fact I just bought a few new ones. Nin has never disappointed me in the games department and I'm sure the WiiU will be no different.

NC: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers Review

NC: wasn’t really a big Final Fantasy fan until Crystal Chronicles for Gamecube. This game introduced me to the series, and is still among my favorites due to its charm and innovative multiplayer mode. 5 years later, Wii owners got a sequel to this wonderful game, giving the series a huge makeover, complete with more realistic character models and an overall more mature look at the world. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers has received tons of mixed reviews since it’s launch in 2009, but I’ve gotten the opportunity to play through this game to give you guys my thoughts on it.
