This is originally posted Xbox Live General Manager at http://gamerscoreblog.com/p... , and has a less controversial headline "Xbox LIVE being discontinued for Original Xbox consoles and games".

Also it's already being discussed at MajorNelson's blog as well:
http://majornelson.com/arch...

shaunmcilroy5208d ago

Its not a controversial headline when it states:
1) It's being canceled for the original Xbox
2) I referenced BOTH in the article.

Winter47th5208d ago (Edited 5208d ago )

I still can't believe that they got people convinced to pay-to-play, it's like the greatest trick ever pulled. MW2/BC1 on the PS3's identical to the 360's if not better since Sony's quality testing's faster at deploying patches than Microsoft's LIVE.

I can't count how many times I got into arguements about Live vs PSN and it would end with "Xbox Live's better since it's a paid service, do YOU really think a paid service is worse than a free one HAHA noob" Actually, yeah, it is, I was able to check my twitter & facebook day 1 on my PS3 browser while Microsoft took an E3 convention to reveal the "surprise". And play COD4 free for 3 years after I purchased it while people had to renew their "Silver" 3 times just to play it.

If I were paying for Dedicated servers, that would be great, but if I can play MAG with 256 players lag-free, and I can't play a 10 player GeOW2 match properly, then you just know, it's just ain't worth it.

Some would say Buh Bat ts onlyh 50$ yuO poor guy! Even if it's 1$, the concept itself is wrong. Online's been free for over a decade, and it should be unless something really special's provided.

darkmurder5208d ago

Meanwhile PC still has a large community of Xbox 1 games.

kewlkat0075208d ago

Yeah Blizzard has been successful at it as well, with WOW. If you were smart and wanna build an empire, you'd jump on this trick as well....Easy money....ya say...lol

SilentNegotiator5208d ago

But at least it will give him added pressure to get a current gen console.

Blaze9295207d ago

ok this is just stupid. mean to tell me I can no longer play xbox 1 games online just for nostalgia like Halo 2? stupid

Christopher5207d ago

Standard MS policy of no support after 10 years.

darthv725207d ago (Edited 5207d ago )

I have not read the article (i will after this post) but I believe what MS is doing is cutting off access to the live network for the original xbox. That doesnt mean you wont be able to play old xbox games online as you can do that through the 360. So you can still play halo2 but you need to use the 360 to do that.

Now for me, they need to make more of the older games BC with the 360 that support online that have not been updated. Otherwise this will really suck for those who have to use the original xbox to play online because the game wont play through the 360. I have a couple that are not BC with the 360 and for me to play them (online) i need to hook up my xbox.

Now I will go read the article...

edit: I just read the article...ok this sucks. No more halo 2 or crimson skies or mech warrior for me after tax day (april 15th). Oh well, I can still play them w/o multiplayer except local.

TheSadTruth5207d ago

this is COMPLETE CRAP, and I don't even play Xbox 1 games anymore

these people shell out $5 a month for a service that does NOT PROVIDE ANY SERVERS

Halo 2 is 100% P2P, there is 0 reason to discontinue Xbox live, it costs them almost nothing to maintain, people only connect to other people. They could just remove the rankings and other things they do on their end.

Battle.net has been running for over 10 years and costs nothing, while providing FREE DEDICATED SERVERS for ladder games

this is a joke

Darkstorn5207d ago

This is kinda sad. I loved my original Xbox to death (it was my first console - up until that point I was a PC gamer only) even though I was never able to play online (no high-speed internet :P).

RIP original Xbox.

darthv725207d ago

this could be a good thing. The restructuring of the network may actually lead to more dedicated servers for games. The elimination of the old P2P backbone for original xbox games will mean more resources could be poured into fixing the current infrastructure. Less lag and more higher capacity multiplayer games in the future.

Now it doesnt seem so bad (if this is true).

vhero5207d ago

Why do people support 360 looking at the lifespan of the original Xbox compared to PS1 and PS2.... Not to mention People actually PAY to play online. They only got away with it as Sony were second with there online if they were first there would have been no way MS could have charged. However if Sony advertised the hell out of FREE online play it would really hurt MS but they don't and that's there problem.

Qdog5207d ago (Edited 5207d ago )

I will continue to play my xbox even after this happens. The reason I sold my 360 and went back to the original was due to reliability issues as well as my favorite games not having BC support(i.e. Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath, Otogi: Myth of Demons, Otogi 2, Deus Ex: Invisible War, and the list goes on and on). Battlefield 2 will be affected by this, but no worries here, I still love SP. I understand Microsoft's position in this matter, and I have no problems with it, but if they really want to appeal to those that love Xbox1 games to upgrade to their current-gen offering, they need to seriously update the BC list, as I will stick with my Xbox, even without Network support, just for the games and the widescreen support without the black bars.

pixelsword5207d ago (Edited 5207d ago )

"Microsoft have finally heard the calls of beleaguered Xbox LIVE users…They're cancelling the Xbox LIVE service for the original black and green console which probably the best advancement of the service since Xbox 360 launched in 2005!"

Is that true? Who is calling for the end of XBL on the original XboX? Some people are poor and can't afford a new console and really enjoy gaming on the original XboX, which was BETTER THAN THE PS2, especially in the online arena (deal with it). The original XBL community was a trailblazing influence in gaming and the most important multiplayer advancement on consoles since the Dreamcast first introduced multiplayer gaming.

XBL, if you were a person, I'd thank you for showing everyone else how to do it right.

I hope I can go over my cousins house on the 15th and play on it's last day so I can give Halo a proper send-off.

darthv725207d ago

To answer your first question. I support any console with good games regardless of the parent companies decision making. Sega made lots of mistakes with their consoles but it didnt stop me from getting them and the various great games available for them.

I sort of see it like the 360 is MS's genesis in the sense that they couldnt make a dent with the original xbox in the empire sony had with the ps2. Sega faced similar situation with their master system against the nes. It didnt matter that the master sys was better, it didnt have the consumer response the nes did (along with game support). Sega came out with the genesis shortly after and turned lots of heads. Especially nintendo's when they saw their market share starting to decline.

Sony was dismissing the xbox brand in the same manner. Until it became a threat (with 360) to their market share. It happens in business. But simply, I support the games and if I have to buy the various systems to play them...so be it. Some people actually pass up great titles simply because they have a grudge (or whatever) against the company responsible for the system. That just seems to limiting (in my opinion).

As for paying for live, you have to figure the times then were about community based interaction. Think AOL and even compuserve before that. Communities that let people interact without wandering aimlessly through the internet. It was different times then. I can say now that peoples perception of the internet has evolved to be more self sufficient and less relying on a community based online service (like AOL).

Gaming never really had that on a console until xbox. To make it work, you obviously need the support of the members which in turn means some type of dues to be paid from time to time. By all means the first xbox community is NO WAY as robust as it is now. I can only theorize that sony chose the free way to jump start their online in a big way. If they offered the pay to play and most consumers had a 360 already then it just would have been as enticing to sign up for sony if you are already paying MS. Make sense???

I feel that at some point sony may restructure their online system to include pay to play but that isnt happening anytime soon. And by that I am referring to gigantic sized multiplayer matches that need lots of resources to maintain which cant be done without getting some $$ from the participants. Free play will continue but you may just be limited in the player count.

We really dont know the full details about sony's ideas on the future of their community. What we do know is that MS is making changes that could potentially lead to better services and increased online interaction. What that means is anybody's guess but I will continue to pay the live fee once a year because I like the service.

Nothing wrong with that (for me at least).

LEGENDARY PELON5207d ago

Tears started to pop out of my eyes when i read this. This means no more
Halo 2

A feeling of nostalgia trip ran through my back spine while reminiscing the good old Halo 2 days

Ima going to be playing Halo 2 untill its no longer available

But cmon Microsoft dnt discontinue this service

Long Live the King: Halo 2

multipayer5207d ago (Edited 5207d ago )

How can you throw away features on a pay service? Live better become free now, this IS probably the beginning of their desperation for sales... FECK Halo 2 though, you have over 9000 sequels to look forward to and a much better PC version(pay to play that). What matters is how will I EVER get my 500 kill vehicle badge in conker live & reloaded now... This is unacceptable.

Sitdown5207d ago

Ahh, what a wonderful world that you live in where every thing is in black and white....I bet you despise all Apple products as well ehh? While I agree the gap between psn and Live has greatly decreased, I can't help but feel that Live is a little more seamless as compared to psn....and for the time being, I am okay with paying the $2.50 a month for a more unified experience.

Anyhow..I am going on record right now........should by some chance/miracle the 360 sells more than the ps3 in the coming months...the reasoning that will be given to justify the sales, is that Microsoft shut down Live on the original xbox, and in turn forced original users to upgrade to a 360.

Anyhow, serious question concerning MW2..is there any difference in MW2 on the ps3 and 360...I grabbed it for $39.99 on the 360, but Wal-Mart has the hardened edition for the ps3 for only $10 more. Please give unbiased opinion and not fanboy rants...concerning online experience.

LesterCorncrake5207d ago

to the guy ranting about how psn is better because its free bla bla.... i understand what your talking about even though it comes across as fanboyism...

i had the xbox, then a 360 and i loved live, i thought that it couldnt get any better...this was simply because i had MS tinted shades on.

MS are exceptional at brainwashing the majority of gamers with mass marketing.

in the end i decided to bite the bullet and purchased an 80GB phat... i instantly felt stupid in a way at what i had been missing out on.

the playstation is a far greater experience and i almost feel for sony a little bit because of the quality and effort they have put into this machine and yet it is actually just competeing with the xbox, it deserves to be put on a pedistal its that good.

im not a fanboy i just feel a duty to stress my points of view, most of you guys are seriously missing out.

halo 2 was still fun...so what about the original xbox games on games on demand, you can only use halo 2 for its campaign? that sucks...halo 2 was fun online, and last i remember, it was the top played original xbox game still today (before canceling xbox live for first gen xbox)

duplissi5208d ago (Edited 5208d ago )

no i dont think its like that, just a couple of days ago i put halo2 in just for kicks, and it downloaded the latest patch and i was able to access my current friends list. i think that all this means is that the original xbox wont be able to connect.

Edit: nvr mind i just read the article that sucks... many memories from halo 2 :(

-MD-5208d ago

This will make way for improvements to the current Xbox Live, larger friends list capacity for example.

SixZeroFour5208d ago

oh yea, forgot about that issue having to do with halo 2 i believe...sucks for me tho, i like to keep a tight bunch of friends and not too many randoms, so i havent filled up the 100 limit yet, lol...looks like ill be less lenient now, so i can have back up players to play with incase my friends arent on i guess

vhero5207d ago

New servers could have done exactly the same I doubt the few thousand people still playing online with the original box would have been dragging down the network. However MS won't pump money into new servers in fact you can bet your ass this is a money saver nothing more. These servers will be closed down for good not moved to 360 infrastructure. MS are trying to make as much as they can now as they know it's not long before Sony overtake them in this race so they need to make all there money back and make an overall profit before they lose out.

-MD-5207d ago

Of course she did. She's part of the problem and will just tow the company line.

VenomUK3h ago(Edited 3h ago)

Bloomberg’s Dina Bass could barely read her scripted question without looking at her notes, whilst Sarah Bond who WAS expecting the question spoke without saying anything of substance or answering the question in any meaningful way. Clearly she’s had the same expert PR training as Phil, but this avoidance was disrespectful. In time the short-sighted decision to shut down Tango Gameworks will be seen as of the most notorious examples why Phil Spencer messed up his tenure in charge of Xbox. That’s a fully built out talented team that could’ve been put to work on any project.

Additionally, Phil Spencer should not be using Sarah Bond as a patsy for his mistakes- he should be answering that question.

gleepot1h ago

I think you are all really overselling Tangos value. Hi-Fi rush was a lot of fun. Ghostwire was incredibly dull. Evil within 1 and 2 were just okay.

lucasnooker45m ago

Evil within 2 was incredibly under rated. I thought that game was surprisingly good

XiNatsuDragnel4h ago

Yikes you don't help Sarah 😬 making a problem worse

Christopher3h ago

She's playing her role. There's absolutely nothing any of them can say other than the truth, this is about profit margins and not quality, so they just don't answer anything and wait for gamers to forget.

Hofstaderman4h ago

Like a deer caught in the headlights.....

notachance4h ago

I always wondered why xbox had multiple leaders with similar titles like Phil Spencer, Matt Booty, and Sarah Bond, like, how many heads do you actually need?

Seems to me it would be more cost efficient to cut 2 of them instead of all those studios.

DarXyde2h ago

Frankly, I suspect she is the most competent of them. I don't mean that I like her more, I mean that she's the best at articulating herself and giving the talking points MS wants to give. The others are starting to sound more like her than her sounding like any of them.

Are any of these people "responsible" for what's happening? No. This reeks of Nadella. But that being said, I don't see any of the Xbox heads stepping down in protest.

"Don't shoot the messenger", sure, but at the same time, the messengers don't seem to take umbrage with the message. Not enough to remove themselves from it, anyway.

The hits just keep on coming. Will not be surprised if this gets canned. It already got rebooted and they had to bring on an outside studio to try and help developement. Some of the original creatives have left the project.

But I will say, just wait until the MS showcase. If you don't see it there, then alarm bells should start ringing.

helicoptergirl20h ago

Are you expecting the game to be shown at the upcoming Xbox Showcase?

neutralgamer19921d 3h ago

Just cancel it because we know you won’t be happy with its sales performance while giving it away on GP day one. GP is the biggest issue for developers and that affects the sales. No one can deny that now. GP equals to good deal for gamers and bad deals for AAA development. Take two CEO said it and he was 100% right. There are certain games that make sense on GP but not every game. 20 million gamers playing a game on GP doesn’t mean much to MS it seems because they still want sales. Just please start releasing all games on other platforms otherwise Phil is next now. You can’t spend 80 billion and be this bad

Inverno1d 2h ago

The studio was founded in 2018. It's still not adding up in my head how it can take 6 years to develop a game, with a whole dev studio working on it.

***If the makers of a GOTY competitor that outdid sales and Game Pass expectations and owned by the richest company in the world cannot stay open - what hope is there for everyone else?***

None if you stay in an arena of corporate driven metrics. And this is what happens when you allow publishers to buy up massive amounts of studios and IPs. There's only so much internal competition and the focus in the end will remain on those who look best on a spreadsheet.

Players can be so driven by what is best for them and only see what is put right in front of them. But that's not what is best for them. They are being lied to constantly, as seen by Microsoft's ridiculous praise for Hi-Fi Rush and Phil's lies about Redfall prior to release and how big of a supporter of both studios he has been. But, instead of thinking "wait, this corporation wants me to think this way, should I be listening to them and believing them?" players eat it up and go "OMG, did you hear what they said! They're just like us and they know what's best for the industry."

And because of this single-mindedness of the majority of gamers, we are where we are now. Massive layoffs. Massive studio closures. Games that we were told were representative of the core values of said corporations shelved and studios behind them shuttered. The truth is coming to bear because the truth all along was only what the numbers in an excel spreadsheet told the corporate suits.

If you truly want what is best for the industry, what is best for developers, then you need to support Indie games, support developers that maintain control over their IPs and direction, support boutique publishers who only exist to help Indies make it out the door and don't own the IP. Stop supporting major corporations with your money or you devotion. Stop playing their games, and I don't mean video games, but their marketing, their double speak, their guy without a tie who says things you want to hear PR, their future of video gaming concepts as if we were hurting for new ways to play games other than installing/downloading and playing them, and especially any slogan from them that gives the impression that they are for you, the consumer. They are not. You're merely a value on a spreadsheet.

Neonridr1d 13h ago

don't drink the koolaid kids.

Christopher1d 13h ago

Sure, I'm the one drinking the koolaid. Keep believing in the corporations. They definitely have your best interests in mind. All hail the Big Green, For You Blue, and Nostalgia Red! All praise big corporations buying up other publishers. All praise the inevitable spreadsheet adjustments. For greed, not the players.

Crows901d 5h ago

I'd like to but I think you drank it all...

notachance22h ago

so they don’t become like you right?

Neonridr19h ago(Edited 18h ago)

@Christopher - look, I didn't mean to sound rude with my comment there, you do make some good points. However, it doesn't have to be all doom and gloom. If this is honestly how you feel, then you don't have to game anymore, you can go find another hobby and put your time and effort into that.

Do I wish that these gaming companies were always a customer first driven business? Sure, that would be great and dandy, but that's not real life, nor it is realistic to expect that fully.

Saying to stop supporting these corporations, or my guess is specifically only Microsoft considering this is the mantra at N4G, isn't the answer. Indie games are great and I have adored plenty of them, but imagine a world with no Halo's, Zelda's or Last of Us titles. No thanks.

Christopher16h ago(Edited 16h ago)

***However, it doesn't have to be all doom and gloom. If this is honestly how you feel, then you don't have to game anymore, you can go find another hobby and put your time and effort into that. ***

Do you know how many great a indie games there are out there? Why would I need to stop gaming at all? There are even AAA quality indie studios who develop and publish their own games still. Why would I need to leave gaming when I can instead support the good elements of the industry?

***Saying to stop supporting these corporations, or my guess is specifically only Microsoft considering this is the mantra at N4G, isn't the answer. Indie games are great and I have adored plenty of them, but imagine a world with no Halo's, Zelda's or Last of Us titles. No thanks. ***

First, pretty sure my reply to you makes this about all of them, not just Sony.

Second, I can easily imagine not playing those games considering the mass majority of us spend over 99% of our time playing other games from third party studios as it is.

Third, the answer is indeed to speak with your wallet. As long as you keep supporting these companies with your wallet, they will continue to treat studios the same. It's obvious that MAU don't matter, as seen by the closure of Tango Gameworks, the canning of promised updates to Halo Infinite, and the canning of TLoU MP.

Fourth, speaking with your wallet can also mean just waiting for deep sales and never buying MTX. This is how I support Ubisoft. I pay practically nothing for their games that I'm not even a blip on their radar. Even if it's a great game, I wait for a deep deep sale because I want them to get as little as possible from me until I feel they've changed their ways.

"then you need to support Indie games"

Get punk rock with it.

rlow11d 7h ago

I don’t always agree with you. But you are correct and well said. It amazes me on what used to be a pretty straightforward industry has turned into such a greedy mess. Layoffs galore across the industry and corporates pushing/firing whatever is going to move the bean counters. With no regard for the people making the games. I’m tired of hearing these rich companies saying it’s just business, or an adjustment needed to be made, but it’s not personal. Then on top of it they have to inject corporate inclusivity into every game. On top of releasing broken games and expect people to pay top dollar.

But again well said and we as the consumer need to not only speak up but vote with our wallets.

Aussiesummer1d 1h ago

Anything that makes millions is going to become a miasma of greed and corruption.

Huey_My_D_Long14h ago

Honestly feel like Christopher's comment is on point.

Probably one of the truest statements I've seen on this site rdegarding the gaming industry change.
We have got to support smaller titles and fight against the homogenization thats been happening. Admittedly even from Sony even more so from Ubisoft.

There should be steam group or a site dedicated to listing devs on a scale with how much they control of their IP and if not, I might look into it myself.
I'm liking your agenda man.

This should not be surprising to any of you. We have been saying for MONTHS that Game Pass is not sustainable and that these acquisitions will come at a massive cost to the industry. People refused to grasp the difference between buying and investing in a developer like Insomniac or Housemarque, and buying the entire publisher. People refused to accept that spending billions to acquire the biggest publishers in gaming means you have to RECOUP those costs, and you aren't going to do it without consolidation, focusing on core IP that sells, creating revenue streams via ownership and releasing on other platforms, and closing down studios that are superfluous to the budget requirements. You will not recoup those costs by investing in risky new IP or creative new games and studios.

No, people cheered Microsoft on like they were delivering GOTY titles to their door and pouring money into the industry to grow Indies and triple A projects.

You are getting what you deserve. You take the consequences of the practices you supported.

Layoffs happen. Some games don't succeed. Everyone has seen it happen. Happens even to the winners.

This, however, is goddamn shambolic and if you can't see it now then there's no helping you and you should keep enjoying the "value" of Game Pass while contributing nothing to this industry.

I've never seen the developer of one of the best games of the year get axed before.

Ninja Theory is next after Hellblade 2, I can see them going independent again. There's more to come from MS.

TiredGamer1d 11h ago (Edited 1d 11h ago )

This is exactly it. There is more of this coming. MS runs from one bad idea to the next, and GamePass is an unsustainable train wreck that we get to watch in real time.

GamePass is stalled for subscriber growth, and all that they can hope for is to either A) Reduce the quantity of games (i.e. shutter game studios), B) Reduce the quality of games (to make more mediocre but lower budget offerings), or C) Raise prices on existing customers. Or some combination of those.

MS does not have a passion for the industry. The XBox project, from the beginning, was sparked from the fear that someone else would eat their PC market lunch by making a games machine that replaced the PC. THAT was the entire motivation for getting into the games industry.

Profchaos1d 9h ago

I saw it from the outset of day 1 on Xbox it's unsustainable no one was buying their games and a noticeable decline in quality and a push to live service elements to keep subscriptions active was obvious.

I saw it every time I'd go to a physical game shop for a Multi plat pre order no one was there for the Xbox version.

I'd go to CeX or other used game stores and be able to pick up the full range of Xbox studios first party games for 20 bucks and change while on the PlayStation side 20 bucks might get me two PS4 launch games and wouldn't even get me a single Nintendo first party game.

-Foxtrot1d 9h ago

"Ninja Theory is next after Hellblade 2"

Anyone think it's weird it comes out in 2 weeks and there's hardly anything on it

Tody_za1d 2h ago (Edited 1d 2h ago )

Actually Foxtrot, I don't find it weird. When last has Microsoft thrown advertising weight behind one of their releases? Long gone are the days where their games had the sheer presence of Halo 3 or Gears of War 2. It's all been replaced with "play it day one on Games Pass."

Why spend millions on marketing a product when you aren't SELLING it? The Xbox faithful aren't going to buy it, they're just going to see it on the splash page of Game Pass.

MrBeatdown1d 11h ago

But hey, at least we get Call of Duty free on game pass*

*eventually?

anast1d 11h ago (Edited 1d 11h ago )

They know what they are doing. If 'you' treat them like "good 'ol simple minded folk", then 'you' are relieving them from blame via ignorance. They knew that they were going all live service, streaming and mobile a long time ago, The Oracle tends to see the obvious. While companies patronize gamers like they are children, which most of them are, may be confused for stupidity, they are also not so stupid they don't understand the decisions that they are making toward the overall direction of their company.

*None of their games were even close to competing for GOTY. They paid for names to be mentioned.

Profchaos1d 9h ago

Xbox survived it's first gen by pure luck halo became a hit and it was huge followed up by halo 2 which had one of the biggest marketing campaigns I can remember seeing in the early 00s we had guys in master chief outfits on the sidelines of state of origin as a promo it blew my mind.

Then the 360 fell under the excellent leadership of Peter Moore and outpaced the PS3 for the first three quarters of that generation the only time anyone has ever done that.

Since losing Peter Moore it's been a rapid decline and buying up the industry stank of a desperate move along with the idea of gamepass itself stank of desperation to me no one was buying the X1 they needed something to get people interested and here we are.

I would happily lose gamepass if Xbox could go back to the 360 era style of focused heavy hitters and solid games.

The championing of consolidation they did was disgusting and what's happened as a result is proof they never had gamers or the industry at heart they need their ROI and that's all they cared about big daddy ms has signed a number of blank checks getting them here and it's coming to collect on their debts

Well, MS bought Bungie to get Halo (and shut down the Mac version), which is a big reason they were as successful as they were. And the PS3 actually outpaced the 360, which is why it eventually outsold it despite releasing more than a year later. So really, not much has changed if you think about it.
