Mass Effect 2 - IGN Review

"Games like Mass Effect 2 don't come around often enough. Look at any aspect and you can be sure it's great. It's incredibly personal while still retaining a sense of epic sweeping scale."

It's time for me to finally get off my ass and beat the first one. I have to play this game immediately!
Congrats to Bioware for delivering what seems to be another outstanding product.

shocky165207d ago

I can't freaking wait any longer!

Sarcasm5207d ago

Same here, I haven't finished the first one. As soon as I do I'm gonna buy this game. Man it's going to be quite a busy few months from here on out.

Bungie5207d ago (Edited 5207d ago )

holy crap Awesome review for an awesome game

looks like another AAA for mah 360

HammockGames5207d ago

Tuesday = automatic sick day

(practices fake cough)

SnuggleBandit5207d ago

^^^to my friends above me...its one site, lets wait to see where the meta ends up before you celebrate too hard okey dokey

LtSkittles5207d ago (Edited 5207d ago )

No, Bungie what does that mean?

Oh, Bungie was too afraid to keep his original comment.

Saaking5207d ago (Edited 5207d ago )

Great score. I can't wait to play the game. A nice addition to the 360 and PC library. I don't really trust IGN so I'll wait for more reviews, but really guys? Will lower scores deter you from buying the game? Of course not! I'm gonna buy the game regardless of scores.

And seriously 360 fans, don't even mention UC2. Wait for more reviews before you run your mouths. Else you could end up making fools of yourselves.

EDIT: LMAO at bungie. Editing your posts ey? Why don't you stand by the BS you yell out? haha.

baum5207d ago

@Bungie, this is one of the early reviews, wait for the ones in the middle to get a more accurate score :)

thereapersson5207d ago (Edited 5207d ago )

You just love stirring up trouble, don't you?

Seriously, a .1 difference, and you're already cheerleading?

You wonder why you get so many disagrees all the time...

edit:

lol @ people comparing U2 and ME2. THEY ARE DIFFERENT GAMES, IN DIFFERENT GENRES, WITH DIFFERENT GOALS IN REGARDS TO GAMEPLAY AND STORYTELLING.

/facepalm

Bungie5207d ago

hey i'm talking about 2009 as overall

2010 looks like it's going to be a better year it outscored MW 2 :)

JonnyBadfinger5207d ago

Yeah im super pumped for this game... my 360 has been switched on in about 2 weeks.
But what makes Mass Effect 2 even better then most other exclusives, is the fact its also on PC... which means twice as many people get the chance to bask in its glory.

I think the days of the exclusive need to come to a end... its pointless comparing exclusives on different consoles. The day all games go multiplat, the gamers will start to win. Cause at the moment all exclusives do is turn gamer against gamer.

But they still need to get ports up to date, the is no excuse for 1 version to look worst than the other... it just shows incompetence on the developers. Bayonetta was a complete disgrace with the way they treated the PS3 version, is you cant make it idenical by launch push it back a couple of weeks.

darkmurder5207d ago

Errr its from a site with a lot of pull and secondly ME2 has already had 10's and 9's from many sites so its clearly good, keep dreaming it'll fail and that MAG will somehow be the better game on the day.

Marceles5207d ago

Preordered this from EBgames, should be on Monday :P

Darkstorn5207d ago

A higher score than Uncharted 2? It had better blow my mind, then...

DMason5207d ago Show
Montrealien5207d ago (Edited 5207d ago )

This game is epic, and deserves this score, bioware really hit it out of the park with this one. And Uncharted 2 is an amazing game.

and I have it! ;P

I just added that Uncharted remark to confuse the disagrees I will get for agreeing with this review.

Bungie5207d ago

ME2 turned out to be the best RPG this Gen

congratulation Bioware and 360/PC owners

Christopher5207d ago (Edited 5207d ago )

Finally, a reason to sit at my PC again.

Edit: edit removed because Bungie edited his comment above.

pippoppow5207d ago

Hey Bungie. Your an attention seeking goofball. Give it a rest already.

This game looks like it's great. Will have to get around to playing it on the PC since I think the 360 isn't worth my time and support.

I wonder if it plays better with a kb/m or gamepad?

Also why is it that every multiplatform related news gets linked to the 360 section at IGN?!

Raf1k15207d ago (Edited 5207d ago )

I wonder if it's actually better than Dragon Age which is awsome.

edit: @pippoppow, I played the first on PC and it lends itself to the PC control scheme really well (also didn't have many of the issues that the 360 version had). Bioware games have always been better on PC anyway so you won't be disappointed.

edit2: there's always the option of using your 360 controller too if you want to play it that way.

green5207d ago

Cant wait until the 28th to pop this game in my 360.

Unicron5207d ago

LOL @ idiots who think scores are anything other than arbitrary.

ME2 is great. UC2 is great.

But you guys love flaming each other, so plz continue ;-)

LtSkittles5207d ago

@Unicron

well said +Bubbles

ABizzel15207d ago

Every aspect of Mass Effect intrigues me, but I just couldn't get into the combat. I have to give it one more try before I rent Mass Effect 2 (If 2 is better I'll just start the story from there).

pippoppow5207d ago

Thanks Raf for the reply. Probably stick to kb/m.

At least the PC version will not have the same intrusive DRM that the first game had. Kind of pissed me off from getting the game. Need to get ME1 (used) +2 (new)when I get the time. 2 looks too good to pass up but will play 1 first.

I did the same when KoToR was released. Bought and played 1 and 2 a few months after 2 came out. I really like sci-fi so this series will be played by me soon.

Solidus187-SCMilk5207d ago

This game looks great. I cant wait to play it.

gamer20105207d ago

Sounds incredible. I have no doubt that this will be one of my favorite games of all time.

solidt125207d ago

Another AAA game for the PC and 360..... Im getting it on PC at launch

TROLL EATER5207d ago

it seems final fantasy 13 will be disapointing based on some reviews. oh well got mass effect 2 to look forward to perhaps best rpg this gen

3sexty rulzzz5207d ago

this at walmart and get a ten dollar giftcard.

presto7175207d ago

But I think I'll pass. Never got into the first one. Cant say this one will be much different.

Aquanox5207d ago (Edited 5207d ago )

Increible review!

Any other game will struggle to beat MAss Effect 2 in reviews but most important, we gamers will enjoy a jewel of a game in just 4 more days.

Well done Bioware!

TheDeadMetalhead5207d ago (Edited 5207d ago )

I have to get this on 360.
I also have to get MAG on PS3.
And No More Heroes 2 on Wii.

Translation: TOO MANY GAMES. D:

JokesOnYou5207d ago

for a Great Game, and well deserved.

Saaking you of all people shouldn't be telling anybody to wait before running their mouths.....afterall you are the fanboy who admits to your fanboy agenda in your Bio, apologizes later on a NPD thread for your bashing stating you will change and then later your back to bashing 'n trolling 360 related threads yet again. lol wtf is wrong with you, bipolar I guess....either way, just looking at all the previews, screenshots, media, trailers, and many many sites consistently saying how ME2 has improved over ME1 in every way we don't need anything to know that ME2 is going to be one helluva game, so save your caution, you're just bitter.

JOY

NeoBasch5207d ago (Edited 5207d ago )

I'm past the breaking point. I couldn't possibly be any more excited for this game. The first one may have had its fair share of issues, but, overall, Mass Effect was an achievement. Similar on scale to Uncharted. These scores make me rest easy knowing how often I've compared the two. I view these franchises as the pinnacle of game design. If you can bear with the technical issues, the original Mass Effect will impress beyond belief. Narrative design for the win!

Bnet3435207d ago

GOTY 2010 folks. I'm calling it.

Traveler5207d ago

Wow another amazing score. I loved the first game, so this should be even more incredible. Looks like it will be a GOTY contender for sure.

Xandet5207d ago

picking up ME2 and NMH2 at the same time? It's going to be one long, amazing night/morning.

RAZORLAND5207d ago

Im STILL trying to get the most out of the first one! By the time I get around to ME2, the price will probably drop; but I should support Bioware day one just for making a great game the in ME1.

FACTUAL evidence5207d ago (Edited 5207d ago )

Some people are just plain ridiculous....they talk about a one point difference. Besides, just because it got 1 point over uncharted 2 doesn't make it better....it only indicates that it's one of the most outstanding games for it's genre. Yeah guys compare a RPG to a TPS...lol what's next? Comparing GOW3 to Splinter cell: Conviction? Get over it, game and be happy..

JasonPC360PS3Wii5207d ago

That is a great score keeps this up we will have a major GOTY contender.
Microsoft, EA, and Bioware scored a big here and this is just the big hit EA needed. Microsoft scores here because Mass Effect 2 can only be found on their platforms the Windows PC and Xbox 360. Bioware scores because this will probably earn GOTY.

tripewire5207d ago

From the Review:
"I've played through the game twice and during that time experienced sound cutting out, my character getting stuck in the environment and full game crashes."

I'll take UC2 thanks lads.

CWMR5207d ago

-Oh please, you act like Uncharted 2 didn't have glitches.

Mass Effect 2 is one of my biggest games of the year. Nice to see it getting such critical reception.-

thewhoopimen5207d ago

Been a fan of Bioware since Baldur's gate. BGII, Icewind Dale, Planescape: Torment (by far favorite), Neverwinter Nights, Jade Empire (hated this game with a passion, because of its lame generic asian themes), KOTR, Dragon Age, (missed ME1... but won't make that mistake) and now ME2... mmm for my pc!~

Hoggy19835207d ago

As a 360 only owner I'd agree that 2009 was the weakest yet for the console. 2010 looks to be getting things back on track.

As for Mass Effect. If Im honest, I really wasn't that bothered about the first game. However it sounds like the second installment has really upped its game. No way I can get this game until I get paid next Friday. Looking at my bank balance I'm on an economy drive until then!

vhero5207d ago

Got the superior PC version installed and not got round to playing right now but will do probably later today. Great score though..

Pika-pie5207d ago

Awesome, time to blow the dust off my 360 controller!

iv just finnished Dragon Age and im bored of waiting for the new DLC so Im all set for Mass Effect 2 to keep me busy until FFXIII comes out.

Microsoft Xbox 3605207d ago

IGN are less critical to 360 games, that's all.

Microsoft Xbox 3605207d ago (Edited 5207d ago )

It's a 9.6 on last gen standards. Now if you were to compare scores with PS3 exclusives, this will be an 8 at best.

Also, lets not forget, IGN are less critical when they review 360 games.

skagrerrrr5207d ago

I'm totally getting Mass Effect 2!

MNicholas5206d ago (Edited 5206d ago )

Seriously ... IGN only rates games this high if they are exploding with innovation. Don't buy the game. It's a fire hazard.

On a more serious note. They talk about it being a top notch technical showcase and put up utterly dull screens. I've seen multi-platform games with better visuals. Almost PS2 quality environment textures, poor shadows (sometimes non-existent), mediocre lighting, etc...

I have to admit I like the art style. Surely an IGN reviewer knows the difference between snazzy artistry and technical merits ... right?

This. Is. The. Game. Of. The. Year.

Sarcasm5207d ago

A definite contender, it will be. GOTY seen, remains to be.

Odion5207d ago

its def going to win all the RPG awards

Saaking5207d ago (Edited 5207d ago )

It's too early to tell. And it's a really early game. The disadvantage of early games is they tend to be forgotten by the end of the year. Hopefully, ME2 and many other early games (including GOWIII) won't be forgotten.

thereapersson5207d ago

Yeah, Killzone 2 had the unfortunate luck of running into that exact problem

5207d ago
littletad5207d ago

But a worthy contender nonetheless.

5207d ago
baum5207d ago

Fable 3 and Fallout 4 are coming out, and that's only in the WRPG department.

We have yet to see how good is FFXIII and if Versus is coming out this year. That does not include all the unannounced games for the end of the year. Furthermore, some people look into RPGs for characteristics that other games may also display, like a great storyline, customization and epic battles; God of War 3, The Last Guardian and Zelda Wii may just fullfill that niche too.

LtSkittles5207d ago

@Baum

It's Fallout New Vegas, not Fallout 4.

Raf1k15207d ago

There are so many amazing games coming out this year. It's going to be really tough choosing which one is GOTY.

aaronisbla5207d ago

no offense to fable but do you really think it has a chance of winning rpg category goty with mE2 and hell, even FF13? Bet on no

gamer20105207d ago

As much of a fan as I am of Mass Effect, I have to admit that it is too early to say for sure which game critics will tend to choose as GOTY. Ultimately, though, it doesn't matter. Reviews are opinions. GOTY selections are opinions. What really matters to you is your opinion.

LEGENDARY PELON5207d ago

Sir you are wrong once more!

A good game is never forgotten and prevails for years!

Look at Halo 3, its a 2+ year old game and
thousands still play it today!!

Only good games tho!
ME2 will do this as well!

FACTUAL evidence5207d ago

Don't be so hasty to say that. FF13 lives off it's name alone......sad to say.

vhero5207d ago

GOTY a game released in Jan? I seriously doubt it we all know they only ever count games released from September onwards as they are fresh in peoples minds.

Best RPG of this generation. Great Review

baum5207d ago (Edited 5207d ago )

Best WRPG*

Edit:

@disagrees, Not Best WRPG? Oh well, I guess it's fallout then.

HammockGames5207d ago (Edited 5207d ago )

But to say it trumps all, well, that's subjective.

Especially considering Demon's Souls is still very much front and center.

green5207d ago

Best RPG this gen, simply no contest.

thereapersson5207d ago

Again, that is OPINION

Besides, even though they are both RPG's, DS and ME 2 are both VERY different games. They have different styles of gameplay. For one, DS isn't a team-based WRPG with third-person shooter elements.

firelogic5207d ago

You haven't even played it and you rank it as best RPG? Weirdo.

5207d ago
Montrealien5207d ago (Edited 5207d ago )

since my comment seemed to have been "offensive" to some, yet, not offensive enough for a ban, I will re-phrase it.

People disagreeing with someones subjective opinion seems a tad useless no? Since the disagrees themselves are also, subjective. Why can;t you guys just ignore it?

With that said, I actually do agree that this is one of the best RPGs this gen, and I know from actually playing it. This game is amazing.

And in case my original comment was deleted because the mod thought I was talking about a pirated version of the game, I actually have a legal retail copy its in my gamertag. I do not promote piracy, intact I hate it.

gamer20105207d ago

It is a matter of opinion. But for those of you that think reviews are everything, you should realize that Mass Effect 2 has a very good chance of having higher overall scores than Demon's Souls.

5207d ago
HammockGames5207d ago (Edited 5207d ago )

@ Tatotiburon & Montrealien

Hey fellas', just to be clear, I'm not trying to attack your opinion(s) or even really disagree for that matter. Not at all. I just like discussing gaming, and this is a discussion board, no?

And my point is simply that there have been a lot of great RPGs this gen (Fallout 3, Fable 2, Oblivion, and so on) and they all have dedicated fans who may or may not disagree with the statement that ME2 is the best RPG this gen (regardless of review scores).

My personal favorites so far are ME1 (and now probably ME2), Fallout 3 (buggy as FO3 could be), Borderlands, and Demon's Souls. Not sure I could pick an absolute favorite from this list - they're all fantastic for different reasons - but I generally prefer shooting mechanics over sword play.

If you already have ME2 in your console (or PC), I'm jealous!

vhero5207d ago

Wow Best RPG? Your really going with that?? 1 site gives it a good score and you think that eh? Well first of all FFXIII ain't released outside Japan yet which is a true RPG unlike this shooter with RPG elements. This is by far a full RPG I would say its definitely a shooter with strong RPG elements. Same as the first game. However its an opinion it being the best you can't base that crap on one score from one reviewer at IGN.

PirateThom5207d ago

No idea how BioWare are going to top the first one.... but damn, looking forward to finding out.

kaveti66165207d ago

Better framerate

Better Texture loading

Better characters

More precise shooting mechanics

More manageable inventory system

More varied side-quests

More varied unexplored side planets.

Only downside is that 2 review sites have already claimed that the main storyline is slightly disappointing

vhero5207d ago

For a 9.6 score you expect a perfect score but hell this is IGN afterall there scores have always screamed out strange giving Uncharted and modern warfare 2 the same score for graphics.

The 7 Best Western RPGs: Immersive Adventures

RPGs are often huge, sprawling endeavours. With limited playtime, we have to choose wisely, so here's the best western RPGs available today.

SimpleSlave20d ago

"I started playing games yesterday" the List... Meh!

How about a few RPGs that deserve some love instead?
1 - Alpha Protocol - Now on GOG
2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

DustMan20d ago

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave20d ago (Edited 20d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.
