vgchartz inventing numbers or vgchartz trying to pass BS off as "reputable" numbers?
I hope this trend doesn't continue.
I do agree that congratulations are in order for Sony. I just don't see how it has any meaning, given the source.

jammy_705220d ago

wow the ps3 will be beating the 360 VERY soon!
and good to see good numbers for ps3 exclusives aswell!

Saaking5220d ago

it's VGchartz, but there's no doubt that the PS3 destroyed the 360. The 360 may have NA, but overall the PS3 has been outselling it since Sept and it will continue to do so for the remainder of this generation. MS is cornered right now.

They took way too many price cuts way too fast. They didn't build up their first party. They wasted their money on DLC. They rip-offed their customers with over costly accessories. XBL is still not free and PSN is catching up. Like I said, MS is cornered. They made too many mistakes in an attempt to beat Sony.

Oztheboss5220d ago

Truth, Saaking. Truth.

However, you never know what Microsoft will do. Money talks, bullshit walks.

presto7175220d ago

We all knew the ps3 won 2009, but the question is how 2010 will play out. The 360's line up in 2010 is better than its abysmal 2009 showing, plus theres the whole motion control thing (gem & natal).

I still think the ps3 will pull through this year and close the gap even more.

lociefer5220d ago

BUT TEH SALEZZZZ !!!1!!!1!!!!!1

rambi805220d ago

Almost 5 million ps2 consoles sold - unbelievable

Xeoset5220d ago

1) This is VGchartz
2) Both companies have recently estimated they've sold more than the numbers shown
3) Calm down before everyone starts beating their chests

sikbeta5220d ago

Again Guys, VzGzChartz is the site of the Guezztimatez, take those numbers as that instead of focus on how the site $ucks because needs to FIX the numbers when NPD/Whatever data comes out

Golfcoachh5220d ago

They are used as a source in the Guinness book of world records. Not bad for some idiot fanboy kid in his basement that used to be on neogaf forums that just makes numbers up out of his head and hates sony and is payed off by Microsoft. Did I about cover everything.

heroprotagonist5220d ago

VgChartz can often be in the right ball park, but their numbers are inherently unreliable. Better to wait for official figures from the console makers themselves.

Microsoft recently announced that they have now sold more than 39 million consoles. Even the highest estimates would still put the PS3 5 or 6 million behind and it could be as high as 7 million behind.

With a strong year ahead of the 360 don't be so sure that the PS3 will be catching up anytime soon. We'll just have to wait and see how things pan out. Nothing is assured for any of the consoles.

mint royale5220d ago

To those saying MS have sold 39 million xboxes. They haven't. They have sold them to retailers, VgChartz estimates to consumers, hence the difference.

Also Sony said they had sold around 3.8 million in Decemeber from their estimations which is exactly what vgchartz predicted so the site did really well despite what the usual derogatory (with little research done) comments above say.

dazzalfc5220d ago

"Microsoft recently announced......."

Yeah, i remember a time when Microsoft stated they past the 10million mark in Europe, only to announce a few months later that they had past......wait for it......the 10 million mark.

Microsofts numbers are about as reliable as VGChartz given Microsofts history of skewing numbers.

As much as i dislike VGChartz, their numbers prove several things

1) The PS3's worldwide popularity is growing
2) The DS is just a complete monster
3) The PS2 simply will not die
4) That 'PS3 games don't sell' is a myth, given titles like Resident Evil 5, Fifa 2010, PES 2010, Batman Arkham Asylum and Need For Speed shift all sold better on the PS3, along with impressive numbers on Uncharted 2 and Modern Warfare 2
5) That quality doesn't really dictate sales (given the strong showing from alot of poor Wii/DS titles and the lower sales from the likes of Killzone 2 and Forza)
6) The gaming industry seems vibrant in troubled times

Maddens Raiders5220d ago (Edited 5220d ago )

PS3 12,844,794 (+31%) 31,499,022
360 10,595,679 (-1%) 37,049,144

bu bu bu we thotz USA = teh wurld.

SixZeroFour5220d ago (Edited 5220d ago )

i thought the total sales gap (with the year headstart) was always at 6mil? if that was so, then wouldnt the 2mil+ difference, of last year, have brought the total sales gap to about 4-4.5mil? but its still at around 6mil...why is that?

The Lazy One5220d ago

yea... at this rate, sony will be shooting passed by 2014

zeeshan5220d ago

That's VGCHARTS man! Unreliable period! If anything, the PS3 figures must be higher than those in VGCHARTS. Guys at SONY must be jumping all over. THey must have sold over 13 million units this year quite easily!

Raoh5220d ago

There is a reason Microsoft put themselves in that position.. while the big three do publish games for themselves and buy dev studios..

the console race is a hardware race not a software one, software is only the ammo..

microsoft thought they could bully their way in like they always do with operating systems and such..

as they should have learned in their battle with apple, the hardware race is played a lot differently and hardware manufacturers do not run with their tails between their legs like software companies do..

microsoft assumed all that spending was worth it because the ps3 would be dead by now and the wii would be cowering in a corner..

the fight is just getting started, and microsoft is already out of breath..

not to mention while it spent its time worrying about sony and nintendo, the zune failed to even come near the iTouch sales and all of its windows mobile phones are shrinking in the market day by day..

and as for anyone saying that vgchartz is at least in the ballpark most of time or sometimes, so is neogaf. you can go there and see their monthly NPD predictions and it would be just as reputable.. at least with neogaf everyone knows its a guess and its opinion.. there is no misleading there

The Lazy One5220d ago (Edited 5220d ago )

You are so far off base with their strategy. They were coming from a distant last place trying to overcome a dominating market share. They're goal was to get the lead and keep the lead as long as possible.

Once you have a solid lead, it's easier to talk people into making exclusives on their own dime, so they don't need to own as many of their own studios.

They aren't trying to bully their way in. They're using the only strategy available to realistically combat a dominating competitor.

Not to say I don't wish they wouldn't have invested in some more first party studios (Bioware *cough*), but their price drops were for the most part well timed.

I am surprised they haven't done a console redesign after Sony's original success with the PS2 slim. Would have done a lot to get away from the RROD stigma too.

edit: and VGChartz is the only source that estimates global sales as far as I know. It's not perfect, but it's all we have. They do a pretty good job of updating historical data too.

wpggamer5220d ago

Those ratio's are no good. You have to factor in the 1 million banned consoles, and at 40% failure rate that means there are only 21.2 million xboxes out there. So the software tie ratio is actually 14.9 for the 360. And even though 360 gamers bought all these games, we also pirate like crazy to because it's dvd so we steal like mad. LOL.

darkmurder5220d ago

Only PS3 exclusive in top 20 is at number 20 and for such a good quality game its a real shame. Sony really need to market their games better.

nnotdead5219d ago

actual M$ is where they wanted to be. Bill Gates said they just wanted to get the first console out there. the second one they wanted to compete, and the third the would take over as the hardware leader.

the Wii surprised everyone, but they are competing well with Sony this gen. even if trends continue the 360 will be tied or slightly behind the PS3 when new consoles are released.

i do get what you're saying though. they could have beat Sony this gen if it wasnt for the stuff you have stated. though hardware issues and closing down 1st party studios could be added.

TheDeadMetalhead5219d ago (Edited 5219d ago )

1 Wii Sports 19,317,772
2 Wii Sports Resort 12,164,167
3 New Super Mario Bros. Wii 9,833,032
4 Wii Fit 9,187,307
5 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 8,718,191
6 Wii Fit Plus 7,951,410
7 Mario Kart Wii 7,417,403
8 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 6,005,775
9 Wii Play 5,622,768
10 Pokémon Platinum Version 4,447,578
11 Halo 3 ODST 4,442,484

Mainstream gamers, I am disappoint.

JD_Shadow5219d ago

Yeah! Even VGChartz can't deny the PS3's success in 09, that's how well Sony convinced people that they got right back into the console war.

Guido5219d ago

They know nothing in terms of real numbers if you back one and not the other. Both are estimates and in some cases, both are off from the real numbers. In the end, the estimate is better than nothing and it is nice to see Sony gaining on MS. So many times did we have to hear how it would take ten or more years for Sony to catch MS... At this rate, it will be the end of 2010 when we see MS overtaken by Sony and MS put into third place where they belong.

belal5220d ago

i think ps3 is more than 31 mill, more like 34. that would make the lead a 3 mill

mint royale5220d ago

They may be at 34 sold to retailers. Seeing as MS are at 39 million to retailers and the gap is probably just over 5 million. That means MS should be at 37 million sold to consumers and Sony 31.5 - 32 million. I wonder what numbers vgchartz have?

mrv3215220d ago

PS3 outsold 360 by 2 million... which is interesting because now the PS3 is superiror. Oh wait sales=/= greatness.

bjornbear5220d ago

360 has more sales than PS3 over all...

sales=/=greatness...

right?

think about it.

dazzalfc5220d ago

I thought about it, then realised that the PS3 was 12 months behind the 360 (18 months in Europe) and that comparing lifetime sales, at this minute, is near enough pointless, given both consoles aren't anywhere near from beind finished yet.

All that you can say is that since both launched, both have sold well (with the PS3 selling at a slightly faster rate). Leave all the greatness crap til they aren't around anymore

Omega45220d ago

PS3 outsold the 360 by 2.2ml not bad but still got a long way to go before it catches up. Plus VGChartz is pretty inaccurate since the 360 is at 39ml but here its just 37ml and when Sony said they were at 27ml VGC had it at like 25/6ml.

On a software note 360 still rules with the highest attach rate, which is incredible when you consider piracy.

mrv3215220d ago

Damage controls. Afterall your console of choice just lost to a doomed console this year.

Also what happend to console sales?

First it was quantity then sales now it's attach rate what will the next thing fanboys will cling onto to 'prove' their console is superior.

Here's something.

There's no superior console only a console which is right for you, I wouldn't suggest a PS3 to a O.A.P and nor would I suggest a Wii you a Halo player. (also btw the superior console will and forever be the Commodore64)

zoks3105220d ago

39 million is shipped, not sold to people, in other words Microsoft has 2.5 - 3 million consoles sitting on store shelf's.

heroprotagonist5220d ago

No, you are wrong. Microsoft has sold more than 39 million consoles to stores, which in turn sell them to customers. That's the same thing Sony and Nintendo do as well. If you think otherwise, you really don't know what you are talking about.

young juice5220d ago

sony does sales to consumers, microsoft does not

http://www.sony.net/SonyInf...

mint royale5220d ago

@young juice.

Sorry but they do not.

http://www.n4g.com/xbox360/...

Please look at the debate that starts halfway down the page and judge for yourself though by all means (the link you've given is also debated and explained.)

rezenu5220d ago

I wonder how fanpeople like you sleep at night when all you do is spin, spin, spin.

Most of all, 360 fanpeople seem to be the worst these days.

How hard it is to acknowledge that both companies aren't going anywhere and that this is good for the industry? What pleasure do you get out of flapping your gums and ranting about how one console is better than the other?

I don't get this...?

The Lazy One5220d ago

no company does sales to consumers in their reports. They might do it in press releases, but reports do numbers sold to retailers because it's the only thing that affects the companies bottom line.

Sprudling5220d ago (Edited 5220d ago )

Has MS really sold 39 mill? The only quote I saw coming directly from MS was something along the lines of "39 mill XBox 360's around the world", which imo translates to 39 mill manufactured, not sold. I haven't really researched this much at all, so if anyone has a link to a quote (from MS themselves) mentioning actual sales just paste it.

If not, then very smart choice of words by MS. They know their marketing! If only people were smart enough to see though it...

OmarJA-N4G5220d ago

Wow if this continues the PS3 will surpass the 360 easily this year especially when it's already got some of the best coming exclusives ...

Congrats Sony the future looks very bright to you. :)

qwerty-15220d ago

Yeah IYO... I prefer the 360 lineup thankyou very much.

Also wow, the software sales are in 360 favor, but showing a lot more people bought a PS3 as a cheap bluray player.

But none the less, sony is in good shape, just like microsoft.

That's good news for prices in gaming this year

2010 Year of The Gamer

Mista T5220d ago (Edited 5220d ago )

it's ironic how you call 2010 year of the gamer yet you aren't one, you're a fanboy

heroprotagonist5220d ago

He's a hell of a lot better than most of the PS3 fanboys on this site. At least he is saying good things about both consoles. Most of you guys (OmarJA included) can never bring yourselves to say anything good about the 360.

That guy might have some fanboy in him, but he is certainly a lot less fanboyish than most on this site.

Anyway, I agree that both consoles are going to do just fine this year. Although, I too prefer the 360 lineup.

young juice5220d ago

dude how can you say the ps3 hasent sold any games,if you look closely you'll see alot of ps3 games have sold around 2.8 mill which is more than l4d2, most ps3 games sell just as well or more than 360's if they dont have halo stamped on them or modern warfare/gears of war

cyberwaffles5220d ago

geez, quit letting fanboys get under your skin. i always see some lame comment complaining about 360/ps3 fanboys or how the site is over run by a particular group. you're reading into it too much. i remember a while ago it was impossible not to see articles such as "top 10 reasons the ps3 is a waste of money" or "sony to drop out video game industry?"

if it's any consolation, the site always shifts back in forth on what kind of people comment on here.

Elvfam5115220d ago

"but showing a lot more people bought a PS3 as a cheap bluray player."

Yes because thats saying something good about the ps3 lol

silvacrest5220d ago (Edited 5220d ago )

"but showing a lot more people bought a PS3 as a cheap bluray player."

thats not even true any more, a quick search on amazon shows a blu ray player for £80, times that by 3 and its still not cheaper then the cheapest retail PS3 (£250)

so before spouting fallacy do alittle research

@heroprotagonist, what he is doing is called a backhanded compliment, some people call it something else.....anyway, its pretty obvious why the 360 has stronger software sales, there are more of them, simple huh?

RedDragan5220d ago

@5.1

I don't see any Microsoft studios is the sales chart for 2009. But I see that Sony Computer Entertainment is there!

Looks like people are buying Sony's games afterall!

Ar Tonelico Qoga: Knell Of Ar Ciel Retro Review – Love Conquers All

Gary Green said: You’ll be forgiven if you haven’t heard of the Ar Tonelico trilogy. The previous two games arrived so late in the PS2’s life-cycle that they simply went unnoticed. While most were tinkering with their shiny new PS3s, Ar Tonelico: Melody of Elemia and Ar Tonelico II: Melody of Metafalica were being ‘returned to sender’ by your local Game stores. Luckily, you won’t need to have played them to understand and appreciate this third and final chapter, Qoga (pronounced k-yoga) tells the story of a racial war between humans and Reyvateils, a breed of biologically produced female cyborgs capable of reproduction, while still having a digital mind.

Oh my god. I kinda wish this would get a remaster on PS5, it would be awesome. One of my favorite games on PS3.

That and 3D Dot Game Heroes. It's a shame that some stuff is stuck on PS3.

Mugen Souls Retro Review – Sexy Demon Space Adventure

Gary Green said: We have a juxtaposition of 2D and 3D visuals, flashy turn-based combat, quirky anime characters with cheeky dialogue with plenty of partial nudity; Yes, this is a Compile Heart JRPG. Whilst the engine is borrowed from Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2, Mugen Souls is more of a Disgaea spin-off. It’s not a strategy RPG as such, it merely sits within Disgaea’s ever-expanding universe (Multiverse? Netherverse? Your guess is as good as mine). You won’t find cameos though, since Mugen Souls is a franchise which aims to stand on its own two feet.
