it's VGchartz, but there's no doubt that the PS3 destroyed the 360. The 360 may have NA, but overall the PS3 has been outselling it since Sept and it will continue to do so for the remainder of this generation. MS is cornered right now.

VgChartz can often be in the right ball park, but their numbers are inherently unreliable. Better to wait for official figures from the console makers themselves.

Microsoft recently announced that they have now sold more than 39 million consoles. Even the highest estimates would still put the PS3 5 or 6 million behind and it could be as high as 7 million behind.

With a strong year ahead of the 360 don't be so sure that the PS3 will be catching up anytime soon. We'll just have to wait and see how things pan out. Nothing is assured for any of the consoles.

To those saying MS have sold 39 million xboxes. They haven't. They have sold them to retailers, VgChartz estimates to consumers, hence the difference.

Also Sony said they had sold around 3.8 million in Decemeber from their estimations which is exactly what vgchartz predicted so the site did really well despite what the usual derogatory (with little research done) comments above say.

Microsofts numbers are about as reliable as VGChartz given Microsofts history of skewing numbers.

As much as i dislike VGChartz, their numbers prove several things

1) The PS3's worldwide popularity is growing
2) The DS is just a complete monster
3) The PS2 simply will not die
4) That 'PS3 games don't sell' is a myth, given titles like Resident Evil 5, Fifa 2010, PES 2010, Batman Arkham Asylum and Need For Speed shift all sold better on the PS3, along with impressive numbers on Uncharted 2 and Modern Warfare 2
5) That quality doesn't really dictate sales (given the strong showing from alot of poor Wii/DS titles and the lower sales from the likes of Killzone 2 and Forza)
6) The gaming industry seems vibrant in troubled times

the console race is a hardware race not a software one, software is only the ammo..

microsoft thought they could bully their way in like they always do with operating systems and such..

You are so far off base with their strategy. They were coming from a distant last place trying to overcome a dominating market share. They're goal was to get the lead and keep the lead as long as possible.

Once you have a solid lead, it's easier to talk people into making exclusives on their own dime, so they don't need to own as many of their own studios.

They aren't trying to bully their way in. They're using the only strategy available to realistically combat a dominating competitor.

Not to say I don't wish they wouldn't have invested in some more first party studios (Bioware *cough*), but their price drops were for the most part well timed.

I am surprised they haven't done a console redesign after Sony's original success with the PS2 slim. Would have done a lot to get away from the RROD stigma too.

edit: and VGChartz is the only source that estimates global sales as far as I know. It's not perfect, but it's all we have. They do a pretty good job of updating historical data too.

PS3 outsold the 360 by 2.2ml not bad but still got a long way to go before it catches up. Plus VGChartz is pretty inaccurate since the 360 is at 39ml but here its just 37ml and when Sony said they were at 27ml VGC had it at like 25/6ml.

On a software note 360 still rules with the highest attach rate, which is incredible when you consider piracy.

The only quote I saw coming directly from MS was something along the lines of "39 mill XBox 360's around the world", which imo translates to 39 mill manufactured, not sold. If VGChartz are to be believed (and the PS3 is shown to outsell the XBOX360 in 2009, therefore, I'm sure it will be), it substantiates a few things:

This generation is OVER. If PS3 can only outsell the XBOX360 by 2.3 million consoles in a year when Microsoft didn't release any huge games and the desperate releasing of the PS3 Slim was unveiled, then PS3 should throw in the towel and focus on profitability.

The PS3 really DOESN'T sell exclusives. Uncharted 2 and Killzone 2 are the only exclusives to make the list, and Uncharted 2 is all the way down at #20. (And NO... Final Fantasy XIII is multiplatform. Sorry.)

With the lead now hovering around 7 million consoles (with Microsoft confirming 39 million moved last week), the Playstation 3 is a console that is destined for third place. Even if they outsold Microsoft the same amount for the next three years, they would only pull into a tie with them. And the next generation will have already started.

XBOX360's attach rate is impressive. The highest of this generation, and flirting with the highest in history. XBOX360 Owners buy games. Exclusive AND multiplatform.

With the older franchises like Street Fighter IV and Resident Evil 5, PS3 slightly outsells XBOX360, lending more credence to the fact that PS3 has a much older install base. Games that remind them of "gaming in their childhood" usually moves more units. The Myopians strike again.

Take away the 1 million banned consoles and 12.5M+ RROD @ 33% failure rate estimate, and 360 install base is 25.5M

This is taking Microsoft's 39M claim, so if that is not true then the 25.5M figure is being kind. If the RROD failure rate is higher than 33% than that figure obviously is less again.

Very good point. But in addition to that the 360 still has a 6 or 7 million lead and even if the PS3 could outsell the 360 globally by more than 2 million a year it would still take years for it to catch up. And with all the stuff the 360 has going for it in 2010 I don't see the PS3 outselling it by much, if at all.

We have to remember that the PS3 is coming off a major price cut, system redesign, and the best received lineup of exclusives it has ever had and it didn't even blow past the 360 to that big of a degree. I can see the 360 possibly even reversing this recent PS3 sales advantage.

All I know is that the PS3 is going to have a hard time to even catch up, let alone surpass the 360. So, however you look at it the 360 has done a great job and has established the Xbox brand as a major player. Sony has gone from owning the majority of the market to struggling to get out of third place.

I don't know if he "conveniently" forgot about mentioning that the 360 was released a year early. But rather didn't bother mentioning it as then he would also have to mention:

- PS3's launch price could have helped hold back the PS3 from potential sales thus leading to more 360 sales.
- The Wii also launched at the same time as the PS3. Yet has sold more units than the 360.
- The 360 has sold more than the original xbox...therefor MS must have gained some market share from someone...most likely Sony. While the Wii has eaten up the entire casual market.

So the 360 releasing a year earlier than the PS3 isn't the be all of reasons. As you can see there are plenty of other factors.

Bottom line is, people will buy what they feel is the best purchase for their money. And most people weren't ready to spend over $400 for a new gaming console. I feel the biggest reason is not so much MS releasing 1 year earlier, but that Sony released the PS3 at such a high price point and nobody was buying at that time. Look at the records recently....price cut and slim and the PS3 outsold the 360 by 2 million.

You PS3 fanboys overemphasize the importance of exclusives, because as long as there are a majority of people buying multiplatforms for a single console, the exclusives battle is not as important as you make it out to be. That's what I do not get. A game is exclusive to the console you buy it on. So...those 13 games that are not exclusive have probably sold a lot more on the 360. A 93 multiplatform on MC is just as good as a 93 exclusive. When that 93 multiplatform sells multiple millions of units more on one console I think that says something. Don't you?

We do it only to rub it on their faces. The ps3 has been selling more every year. The fanboys told us the ps3 WAS DOOMED. Does it look like that? But you cannot experience the game on other platforms. 1/3 of the best games this generation (according to MC) are exclusive to the PS3 platform. I bought my fat when it was launched here in Finland. It cost me 699 euros which is roughly 985 usd according to todays exchange rate.

Well if you look at the exclusive games yes you need to be pretty ignorant or oblivious to the RROD etc to buy a x360. There are 2-3 good games that are truly exclusive and it's not that easy to justify buying an expensive and unreliable piece of hardware only because of 2-3 good games. All the rest of the good x360 games are available with a better quality and a more affordable pricetag for PC. You can't justify a console with multiplats. I'd die laughing if you did.

How is a game for PC more affordable? If you take the $1000 to make a computer good enough to run the game better than 360 plus the cost of the game, I would hardly say it is more affordable.

Afaik most of us want to play the "I told you so" game. Things really have turned around quite a bit in the last year or so. You should've been here when the PS3 was launched in USA. You wouldn't believe the doom and gloom that was put on BY THE MEDIA TOO.

You see the sales are always boosted with pricecuts. The momentary win the x360 has gotten is due to it hitting rock bottom in it's price. PS3 however has a lot more room for pricecuts and therefore it really is irrelevant what the total sales are.

The ps3 just dropped to 300 usd and look what happened. 2 million more in 2-3 months. You do realize that if this trend continues the total sales might be pretty close at the end of 2010? You see THIS is exactly WHY it is irrelevant to look at total sales right now. The x360 is beginning to be out of gas since there is no more room for pricecuts. Name these games and after that convince me why I should buy the x360 with all of it's tecnical problems. It's headache. I've had it and it broke down on me. I got it replaced and sold it right after. You should see what my brothers x360 did to his copy of Geow. The poor bastaird threw it in the trash and told me to sell his x360.

I played it online for a month while it was free. I WILL NOT pay to PLAY online if I have the choise. I loved Halo CE it's one of my all time favourites. Since then it's been downhill. Believe me I've been drinking and playing Halo 2 with a link cable with my friends many evenings. It's fun.

The PS3 is still at $300. Wait when it droppes to the $200 range. That's when the sh*t will start to really happen. This is just warming up. History proves this. Look at the sales of PS1 ans PS2 if you don't believe me.

If the slim sold 500k more monthly than the x360 wouldn't this be considered good sales? What in the world di you expect? The slim helped the PS3 to catch the Wii in this years sales. It only lost about 100k or something. What did you expect really?
