GT GOTY Awards 2009: Best Story

What made the story so great was in the way it was executed.

Yep, totally agree with all of you guys. This is the only game where my family actually watched it, because they wanted to know the story. Shows how good it is, as they hate every other game.

UC2's story was fantastic. There wasn't a single moment where I got bored. One of the best stories ever told in a video game. Has any other game ever sweep so many awards like UC2 has? (I mean, it's winning most of the stuff it's nominated for on the majority of game sites).

It's award set ups like these that make sense. Kudos to Gamespot and GT for giving the most deserving title the awards, unlike the Spike VGA's which seemed to just spread awards around. You don't see the Academy Awards judges make sure each movie receives an equal amount of Oscars, they give them to whomever deserves them most.

Hopefully next year the VGA's get it right. I'd rather have it slighted towards 1 game and any of the 3 consoles if it's well deserving, than spread out to undeserving titles.

I must admit that there's nothing too special about the story in uncharted 2 compared to the more complex story like MGS4 but ND nails it with the execution of the plots and the fact that it is a game and players are engaged closely in progressing the well scripted storyline which I think makes the story so much more engaging! if this is a movie, there may be many of you watching, might not get as excited because there are already lots and lots of movies out there with heavy actions and CGs! ND sure know how to blend the story telling and excellent gameplay into their Uncharted series which made the ok story into a memorable GREAT story! plus with the animation and scripts of the characters which all feel so 'natural', Uncharted gives the players the feel of playing in a movie, not just playing a game! at least that is what I feel.

what we can conclude with Uncharted 2 is; it's not always a really deep and complex story that we need in order to make a great game. a shallow but good story can be made into a great game as long as you know how to execute them brilliantly like Uncharted 2!

Sorry, but saying that UC2's story was the best this year isn't much. The stories in games sucked this year. In fact, they've pretty much sucked this generation of consoles. The only ones that I can think of that are any good are Metal Gear Solid 4, BioShock, and Mass Effect.

Uncharted 2 is NOTHING like Gears online, I've played both and I can honestly Uncharted 2 is far greater. We also like it for it's story, gameplay, controls, characters. I honestly can't think of something it does wrong except actually ending.

The great thing about the story was that it wasnt fitted around some set pieces, but rather the plot flowed naturally through the different settings.
And while it has been pointed out what a down-to-earth main character Drake is, I find it surprising that most "best chicks in games" kind of articles seem to exclude Elena, because I found her to be one of the most attractive, yet realistic, video game characters ever. Neither a damsel in distress nor a politically-correct superheroine, the two games efectively portray her as not as physically adept or strong as Nate, but someone who is plucky and game for everything. Loved the interaction between these two and Scully. I was really afraid there would be no Scully in UC2, again a great character who cracks you up everytime he opens his mouth.

Uncharted 2 had a very good story and was very well told - can't argue with that at all.

But I thought there was 1 game that had as good a story if not a little better because most of it was more suprising and yet it didn't even get a nomination.

Its a shame exclusives on the PS3 really dont sell when they are the best games available on the console. Doesnt Demons Souls wining the Gamespot GOTY say sometime about the great year of exclusives the PS3 had. Even the worse ones are better than 80 percent of the multiplatform games, and better than the overrated 360 exclusives. WOW!

It all started with KILLZONE 2, then MLB the SHOW 09, then inFAMOUS, then Demons Souls, then UNCHARTED 2, then Ratchet and Clanck: ACIT and last but not worse the GOD OF WAR COLLECTION. If these games doesnt move you as a gamer and show you the great year the PS3 had...consider yourself the definition of a fanboy.

Uncharted 2's story stands out as the best among all games this year because of the nature of 'telling' the story throughout the whole game and gamers are playing the game within the well scripted plots all the time - although linear but it keeps players 'in' the story the whole time!

this is where inFAMOUS can't touch Uncharted 2. the game is a sandbox game and the nature of sandbox games where players are free to go anywhere and do whatever they want within the game are almost always interrupting the progression of the story! so, the story is not flowing for the most part and even if there are players playing only based on the story, it kinda beats the purpose of being a sandbox game.

so yes, the story of inFAMOUS is very good but for the nature of the game, in terms of telling the story, nothing beats uncharted 2 this year!

Two things:

Uncharted 2 is basically a corridor shooter. You go from point A to point B and the story is expertly told as you progress. inFamous on the other hand is open world and while I think the story was at least on par with UC2, I think it's hard for that story to be conveyed as well in the open sandbox format.

Secondly, inFamous was seriously overshadowed by the hype for Prototype, and the fanboy-appeasing publications that rated it just as high as infamous. inFamous took a big warm one all over prototype, but still I think it damaged the games rep enough that it wasnt a stand out success like it should have been.

I think the argument can be made-and rightfully so-that Uncharted 2 has a story that is presented almost flawlessly but one that is unremarkable. Take away the quality of it's combined affects (voice acting, music, action, visuals etc.,) and your left with something that isn't something to write home about. there are other games this past year who's story I found delivered more, Assassins Creed 2 being one of them, but that's just me.

I agree the story is nothing special but it is perfectly executed. Assassin's Creed 2 story on the other hand, although good an deep, is way too convoluted and required extensive research and knowledge of history and religion. It also leaves alot up to the imagination.

People confuse "plot" with "story".
While UC2 may have a 'generic' "plot" (which is open to debate), the way the plot is executed (the visuals, the direction and the acting all contribute to the way the STORY is told) is amazing. Ergo, it has a great story.

God, we must have had sucky stories this year. I really wasn't crazy about UC2's story at all. Sure, it was epic as anything, the acting and writing were great. But the characters just weren't interesting at all. Sadly, I can't really think of any great stories from games this year. But I still haven't played Shattered Memories...

UC2 is an amazing game and the story was brilliantly executed via the script, characters and the quality of the voice acting and overall production.

A very worthy winner, this game has everything and does it all excellently.

infamous has a pretty good story, with the twist at the end and all. When you compare the two stories however, UC2 gets the upper hand because all in all it is the sequel to the series and it did have a better storyline
