The Sexual Politics Of Prince Of Persia

This Gamasutra opinion piece by writer Tom Cross explores the negative reception to the leading man in 2008's Prince of Persia, what influence the voice acting of Uncharted's Nolan North might play -- and why one writer finds the backlash illogical.

Tom Cross: "It's no secret that I am a fan of Ubisoft's most recent Prince of Persia game, and that I find the criticism leveled at that game to be puzzling. In some ways, the rejection of the game (and of the Prince especially) always struck me as incomprehensible.

Recently, while playing Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, I was reminded of the Prince, and not just because Nolan North voices both Drake and the Prince. Specifically, the sexual tension in Among Thieves reminded me of that less well-developed, much-maligned tension in Prince of Persia."

I thought the main character was very like-able and i really liked the relationship between the prince and elika. Their back and forth quips were really cool. The relationship could have been a little deeper and more developed but all in all it was good.

I dont see anything wrong with the voice either.

This article makes a lot of sense, i didnt know the new prince was so hated...

Plus, the game was fun as hell. It would be hard for me to find areason to hate it.

I agree, I find it disappointing to see fans not accept this new Prince. Not all heroes in comics, TV or movies began as someone great and respectful, some were just ordinary people just like you and me who didn't have a clue on how to act as a hero in the first place.

Though it was subtle, the Prince's attitude began to become a bit less witty and silly as the game progressed. He became a bit more caring, and if you compare the Prince that first landed in the desert to the one that left it, I think there was a bigger difference in character in a postive way. He's still light-hearted, but he's a lot more caring.

When I first heard the new Prince, I didn't like the American accent at all. But I really loved the witty dialogues. And in the end, I accepted him as the new Prince.

But Jake Gyllenhaal can go jump off a cliff and land on a spike.

10 Super NES Games You’ll Probably Never Beat

If you’re a gamer “of a certain age”, you may vaguely remember the moment when games went from a grueling gauntlet requiring all your skill and concentration to tackle to a casual, checkpoint-containing, cruise control-encouraging walk in the park.

I beat Jurassic Park multiple times!

Jurassic Park had no save system, so I would leave the console running while I went to school, took breaks. It's not that it's hard, it's just tedious. But I was a Jurassic Park obsessed kid (around 13 when this hit), so I would obsessively scower ever inch of the maps (both 2D and 3D) until I had them memorized.

The Star Wars trilogy, I only beat w the cheat codes.

Sounds just like me. I mapped out the indoor areas on paper, leaving the SNES on for days at a time. But I never finished the game. I collected all the raptor eggs except one. So close !

oh god, I remember beating JP on SNES and like you said, it was all in one shot.

I dunno about this list though, I beat all the Star Wars games and while some levels were tough, it was easy to get powerups and extra lives and stuff. Maybe set to the hardest settings it was tough. I also beat Contra 3, loved that game to death.

with the exception of Jurassic Park and Prince of Persia, I've beaten every other one of those. It just takes practice and time. Something I had way more of when I was younger.
