PC gaming isn't dying, it was up last year, and if you've looked at the charts so far this year the PC has been well represented in all regions. I expect more growth this year and next with the release of Spore
I gave up on PC gaming after Doom 3...hated it...Loved Half-Life 2, but my machine would barely run it (or doom 3 for that matter...but it didn't suck because of poor performance...it sucked because of that stupidass flashlight issue)...but after HL 2 I didn't see anything on the horizon that justified getting a new machine...
I just rented and played through FEAR for the ps3, and though its the weakest version according to everybody (never played the other versions, and it does look like crype), I definately wish I didn't miss that in 2005...Its what Doom 3 should have been, if Doom 3 was going for the action-horror thing...
Eitherway...I don't own a 360, and I know a lot of you are very happy with Xbox Live...its just that I could never tolerate paying to play other people online...I know XBL has a ton of content...but so?...Why not include the online gaming aspect on the silver subscription or whatever is free...if I wanted movies, games, etc, etc, I would gladly pay for that stuff on the basis of when I buy it...I don't really know how this windows live thing works, but if you have to pay the 50 bucks a year even to play other PC users...I will never participate in it...
Thats the only reason I never bought a Xbox 360...I figured I could play online with the ps3, and eventually another gaming PC...both for free...and if MS's trend continues, I probably won't be getting into any PC games in the future...If Sony follows, and starts charging for online play...I will build my own gaming empire and give it way for free...or something...
Whoa Installshield PC gaming is still free. Microsoft can't change that they are only charging PC gamers that want to play console gamers with their gold service. The silver service for PC is free and open to all at all times. The so called service though isn't even an application its built into some games to make sure that they don't have to support older PC games most likely. Lazy @ss MS.
PC gaming will never die as long as there are consumers that play PC games. Just take a look at the exclusives in the next few years. Crysis, Starcraft II, Spore, SimCity 5, Sims 3, Half-Life 3 (08-2009), and of course there is a bit more there as well unannounced.
I don't think PC gaming is dying... it will simply evolve. How can microsoft possibly kill PC gaming? Live Anywhere or not ... gamers can continue to use the same services they used to use or play the game the same way... Microsoft adding cross-platform gaming with xbox gamers.. it's not like you can do that now ($50 or not)... so ignore it.. if you don't like the sound of it. I use liveAnywhere on my PC because I already have a gold account... so to me that's a plus since I would already be paying it anyways.
People feel treaten.. by the simply fact that microsoft is trying liveAnywhere. But, how many services are out there that do something similar? Why cause is microsoft? People can always ignore... I ignore the things I dont like.
but cumon. Seems like ms is trying to get more money by offering a service that most pc gamers dont want nor need. Why would i wanna pay to play console owners with gimped controls. Look what ms done to shadowruns controls to compensate for the pad users. The reason its not all doom n gloom is because pc gamers still have a choice. Things which might kill pc gaming is the price of the hardware and compatability issues. Im running vista and cant even load the lost planet dx10 demo. Crysis looks kool but whats the min spec to get it to look like that. Seems like its heading for the hardcore only crowd
Well, I take microsoft is the only company that want to expand their revenue streams and want to make money. Obvious Sony and Nintendo are in it for the love and art. Microsoft has an advantage that Nintendo nor Sony have in the PC market... and people expect microsoft not give it a shot? You people are ok with Sony taking advantage of the lead they have in the movie industry to push blu-ray and you find it wrong for microsoft try taking advantage of the PC market... wow.. microsoft is so evil.
Anyways, here is what's interesting. " Im running vista and cant even load the lost planet dx10 demo. Crysis looks kool but whats the min spec to get it to look like that. Seems like its heading for the hardcore only crowd" isn't obvious you should. DirectX10 is designed to run on very specific hardware. This hardware is very expensive since it relatively (NEW) and video cards are just being released. 2 years from now when the price drops this will not be an issue... It happends with every new technology, OS or hardware. Why do you think Apple makes sells their own Computers? Try installing OSX to an old MAC and you will see how it runs.
my specs are high my friend. I werent going into the evil coorps/ ms vs sony thing so hold your horses. We'll keep this 1 in the pc and ms zone like the header. everything goes down in price in a couple years? whats your point. HARDCORE gamers wont wait which is 1 of the reasons their hardcore, early adopters so to speak. everybody will be able to play crysis in 2 years time but most hardcore and some not so hardcore wanna play it when its released. If you hadnt noticed i wasnt bashing your wonderful ms i was actually calling out the hardware manufactures chill the ?? out and if you wanna quote me at least make it clear(er) why your doing so. keywords compatibility, hardware prices umkay
Your name says it all, "Why o why". You obviously complain a lot about things that you can't control. We all want to pay nothing for new stuff and yet we wan't it. Wouldnt you want the 360 or the PS3 for $99? and a Alienware computer for $300? Ofcourse we all do. This is why there is something call "early adopters". People that are willing to pay the price for having the new stuff. Well... I'm sorry to burst your bubble but there is nothing you can do. It's the way the system works. It's also how Companies finance their new products. Unlike consoles, PC hardware manufacturers don't make money on game sells.. they only make money by selling the product they make. It's how things work since men first invention. Just don't go on a hunger strike to change this... you would die.
your not listening. Im up to date with my stuff. plasma next gen console and pc etc new this new that. im not complaining i dont wanna change the world dude you have so missed my point. Let me break it down for ya. the title is something to do with ms failing pc gaming yes. Please read my 1st comment again. I am NOT saying that ms be blamed, solely or partly for the death of pc gaming. just read past the pc gamers aint gunna wanna pay for something that they had for free an stuff. Im speaking for people who wanna play but cant afford to which isnt ms's fault. STICK TO THE SUBJECT. you seem intelligent but you have truly gotten the wrong end of the stick that didnt even exist. This topic isnt about what companies need to do to survive is it???? im sure you could pen a great thesis but dude this is n4g and the topic your responding to izzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz something to do with ms failing pc gamers. Get that great big ol chip of your shoulder. are you part of the gates family and now ive blown my bubbles so more fool me and 1up to you. And dude b4 you mention that stuff about early adopters paying a bit extra. seems like you contradict yourself regarding comments you make regarding price about a certain games console.. CAN ANYBODY GUESS WHAT IM ON ABOUT???? l8r
I call that a port, a shooter that is worse than Fear and an RTC that didn't even live up to C&C Generals.
Or a console port, and 2 games built around both PC & Consoles therefore setting up limitations for the games.
Point is PC gaming needs more Exclusives which they aren't getting much of. Why pay for a $3000-$5000AU computer when you could play all 3 of those games on a console which costs roughly $800au
like everyone alive I can't wait for Crysis...But if halo 2 is any indication of how Vista's processor and RAM allocation is working...its going to take a hell of a machine to run it well...if they would release DX10 for XP, which there is no reason on why they couldn't, Crysis would run well on much "weaker" machines...that type of crap marketing hurts the industry overall...In eithercase, it definitely looks good, and will restore the "elite'ness" of well-oiled gaming PCs over consoles...
not to mention Company of Heroes, The Burning Crusade, LOTRO, Stalker, Supreme Commander, and don't forget 2008 will see the release of one of gamings biggest franchises Starcraft 2
World of Warcraft, Crysis, UT3 (preferred format)....just to name a couple of the larger titles. Not dying anytime soon....despite the joystick jockies wishes. As long as PC's exist...pc gaming will exist.
World of Warcraft came out when? What has come out lately exclusive to the PC that makes a brand new PC worth the purchase?
Crysis and UT3 are not out yet.
PC gaming is fine if you want a new game every 5 years of course that means that by the time a new PC game comes out you have to upgrade your PC to play it. $3000au just isn't worth it, especially with the hinderance Vista now provides
First off the 5000 dollar computer is a MYTH, i can buy and make a high end computer for 1200, so please shut up on that point.
Secondly Supreme Commander, Stalker, the good C&C3 the burning crusade which sold more then any other game this year.
Then coming out you have Crysis, Half life 2 episode 2 which the bulk of the fans will buy on PC, Starcraft 2, UT3, ET:QW, Spore, Hellgate: London, Bioshock, Frontlines, The Witcher, Dragon Age, must i go on?
you may be able to build a nice pc like myself but many cant and wouldnt know where to start. Consoles lifespans are longer than gaming pc's at the mo but at least there upgradable at a price of course. Graphics cards come out yearly, minimum. If you want all the tops you need to spend big. Personally i stick to a budget and have never owned the best graphics card out at the time but its not stopped me from enjoying a few games
interesting read
Hmmm.
Besides Microsoft is PC gaming and PC gaming has always changed with Microsoft.
finish it off!
PC gaming has been dying for a while now, Microsoft is just driving in the chainsaw
