Demon's Souls - The Most Boring Game of the Year

Edge: Playing Demon's Souls makes me a boring person.

I've been playing the game. A lot. And I love it. A lot. The other night I spent hours with it, and in those hours, all I did was farm the same sections again and again, futz around with my gear, gain a few soul levels, and kill one Vanguard demon - and I killed him by shooting about fifty arrows into his forehead while he just stood there scratching himself.

If you'd been sitting there watching me, you would have been screamingly, knuckle-suckingly bored. In fact, my wife kept walking by and asking, "Weren't you here before? Didn't you kill that thing before? Didn't you kill all those things?" Yessiree I did, but they didn't drop the large sharpstone I need for my +5 Falchion. And so I've gotta kill 'em again.

Edit: I just picked up Dragon Age also and now am torn between playing the two. They are both games that deserve 100% attention in order to get the most out of them. Between the two of them I would say you have close to 200 hours of gaming there.

The two are similar in a small way in that they both are fantasy and rpg type games. Dragon Age however is story heavy where as Demon's Souls is all about the gameplay! Happy gaming!

I'm hoping I made the right choice. I picked it since I was a huge Baldur's Gate fan.

Right now I've started a New Game+ and I don't think I'll have another. Playing it through once was fun and frustrating but trophy hunting makes the game a chore. I recommend making a new character and reading the wiki to make the experience easier.

On the plus side, once you get over the low levels where everything kills you, you enjoy getting revenge on every creature there is.

Its funny, when a ps3 gets their "games of the year" (killzone 2, uncharted 2, demon's souls), when compared to other consoles (such as the Xbox 360), they are essentially boring pieces of crap.

Actually Demon's Souls doesn't force any1 to grind. You can complete the game over and over again to get all the gear, ores, equipment. Also if you take down some of the bosses trough sissy means like shooting the vanguard with arrows its you who is boring not the game.

However many do prefer to grind to get the gear early to lessen the difficulty, but if you pwn you pwn. Getting souls becomes ridicuously easy after new game plus +

All ores that are needed can be bought or hunted from crystal lizards.

The amount of hours I spent farming / lvling on that game is far greater than on Demon's Souls. Yet this boring factor the author speaks of left me more satisfied by the end than if the farming had never took place.

Can't we say "Demon's Souls is the most rewarding game" instead. This wording makes a lot more sense to me.

Grinding is entirely up to you! I did a bit of it, but if you find the right places you spend a lot less time.

You can fight almost any enemy cheaply, but that is your decision. I personally fought the Vanguard with my Quality Spear.

Game must be good, I don't put 100 hours into a game in a month that isn't fun!

This game is amazing; If you wanted to, you could battle your way from the first nave in Boletaria Castle, all the way across the wall, through the whole 3rd area(which is huge), kill King Allant, gaze from his tower at the area where you started from in the far distance miles away, run all the way back to the beginning and kick the body of the first nave you fought that is still laying there. That is technical prowess!

I'm playing Dragon Age as well. While it's fantastic in terms of story, compared to Demon's Souls it feels about as threatening as the Magic Kindom at Disney World.

Dragon Age tells a great story but Demon's Souls burrows into your psyche.

Both are great games though.

I reach level 30 in about an hour on every play through I've been through recently.

I never take time to farm. The closest thing to farming for me is combing each level for every item. Usually I have to go back because I rush through and kill the boss, then claim the items on a second run.

I gotta say I got a PS3 for demon soul's alone and i m not disappointed. Way after the thrill of Shambala (UC2) has passed I find myself launching Soul Rays at hordes of BP's, grinding for gear and using the wiki as my unholy bible.

I gotta admit Demon souls isnt great to the onlooker, but thats not the point! How can a mere mortal bystander feel the tug of the Nexus?

Demon Soul allows me to slay Archdemons and caputre their very essence... but alas the game itself has stolen mine lol :) and i m loving it :)

Same here! I took a day to race through Uncharted 2 to finish it, just to get back to Demon's Souls and wasn't able to go back to Un2 till I finished Demon's Souls. I decided to hallmark it and finish it at 100 hours at level 100!

Off topic: These guys really screwed up my game with that Halloween crap! I had almost all areas to pure white tendency and was a day from getting my friendship ring, then these guys pure blacked the whole game and crushed all my progress. Thought it would go back after, but clearly they didn't care about that part.

You want to know about Demon's Souls? You want to know what a trial it can be? It's ruining my life and I haven't even got it yet!

First I read the reviews eagerly hoping to see whether the Japanese release was what I'd been hoping and..it seemed it was as the good scores rolled in and reviews extolling it's granite hard nature. Then it all started going wrong.

I tried, like usual, to order the asian/endlish version from Play.Asia-and they stopped exporting to the UK! I managed to buy a copy on Ebay and when it arrived I opened the wrapper only to fins a KH2 box with some game I'd never heard of inside! So I'd got conned but I got the cash back so I thought I'd wait for the EU release after the inevitable US one.

And of course they then announce there's no plans for an EU release! Brilliant. By now the furore about the game is going mental with US reviews falling over themselves to praise the game in all kinds of ways so I decide there's only one thing to do and look for a copy to import-again.

So I try the usual suspects but there's nothing in stock, have to try back in a week or two. Thing is I can't wait and I've finished U2 four times while waiting already! So I try Ebay and decide I'll only buy from someone in the UK with 100% feedback-if there's something to buy I thought. Well, there was and I managed to secure a copy for £40 with free postage-a result I thought.

Aaaand-that was last wed and the geezer says he sent it that night by recorded delivery. So when I get nothing by friday I decide to message him and check, to see if I can get the tracking number. Guess what? That's right he's disappeared! Closed down is little shop and left Ebay with my cash(which I'm trying to get back (again) through Paypal!

So, yeah, I'd love to say I was finding the game hard, impossible, easy- whatever-but sadly I'm starting to think I'm just destined never to play the damn game! To make it even worse my useless mate has had a copy for ages and won't lend me it until he's finished it-which after six months doesn't look like it's likely to ever happen.

Oh well-when I get my cash back I'm giving it one last go. From a reputable importer and no matter if they charge me a bit extra. However, it wouldn't surprise me now if the plabe it's on blows up, gets hijacked or even loughs into the side of my fekkin house.

Bloody Demon's souls and all you gits going on about it! I'm starting to wish they never bloody made it.

You get the friend ring by having pure white character tendency, which is actually easier to get with pure black world tendency because you can kill the black phantoms and get a nice boost.

But the writer of this article takes a different approach in describing the game. I clocked about 20+ hours, killed 3 demons bt the 2-2 level is hard as hell. I'm yet to face the demon because I'm being killed repeatedly by some minions, exploding bugs and a lava lake (longest route). I decided to take the shorter route and then I've dying just trying to reach the bottom. This game is insanely hard but I love it.

Flamelurker is the worst boss in the game. Fastest boss, with AOE fireballs at point blank range. And he lunges just about everywhere he wants. He's sort of like fighting a Blangonga, or a Rajang from Monster Hunter. They're not anymore friendlier.

But if you have lots of stamina, you can avoid him by rolling out of his area. After that , pelt him with arrows. Also , it helps if you have a few healing herbs & water veil, which that scrub magician sells in nexus. Stay calm, keep your wits about you and he's not that bad.

There is a spot where Flamelurker can barely get you, if you run at the stairs at the opposite side of the arena, where there's a few crumbled stones on it, you can stay on the left side behind the crumbled stones and shoot him with arrows or magic, once in a while he'll get around the stones, all you do is go to the main court, run in a circle and come back to the position.

I'm gonna farm some more souls to reach level 20, perhaps upgrade a bit more my gear and then its Flamelurker time. I'm a monk so its meele for me. I need to try a few times to understand the best way to approach it. Arent arrows a cheap way to defeat it?

I always invested 1000 souls into Soul Arrow, as it's exceptionally useful against the Flamelurker. Doesn't use stamina which lets you save it for dodge rolling.

The best starting class is the Temple Knight, IMO. Has the best starting armor, knows Heal, deals good damage with his halberd. I've managed to defeat Vanguard in the tutorial with a TK.

I beat FlameLurker the first time I met him; But I had farmed the Red eyes night in 1-1 so much that my level was probably higher than that and my spear was +6!

I found King Allant to be the worst for me. After he took 3 soul levels from me I didn't want to lose anymore, so I just cheaped him with the Poison Cloud and Thiefs ring(took half an hour). Probably wouldn't have had such a problem but they Halloween Pure Blacked me just prior to that!

Its ironic cuz in the strategy guide, they make it sound as if its easy to kill him. Damn. I went through the whole 22, died at flame lurkers, then when I tried to reach him (short cut) I died again, so 2 hours worth of souls, gone, instantly. I joined someone's game, helped her beat it, got my body back, then died again.

Damn that boss is hard. Ridiculous. But my friend playing as a magician beat him on his first try though. Just spammed soul arrow.

The hardest area of the game for me though was in the Valley of Defilement, 2nd area. :/

@Raztad - Flamelurker was the 2nd toughest for me, aside from Allant, because I was pure melee without any spells. There's a bone structure to the left of the arena's entrance that you can get Flamelurker trapped within for quite a while. Looks like part of a spine. Lure him in with minimal armor on, roll out of the way and face him on the other side. He'll just keep running in place and attacking - meanwhile, you can hit him with arrows, a spear's heavy attack, or magic.

Because he obviously likes DS...Is obsessed with it really. They really should re-name it demon's crack to be honest. I haven't had a good night's sleep in two weeks due to that damn game. I haven't even tried to play Uncharted 2 as I want to savor that experience unfettered. I simply can not concentrate on anything else until I am done with this game.

you should always vacuum your ps3. i mean not really always buy once in a while. mine was really dusty because i live near the main road so the dusts always come in to our house. before it broke, the fan was always noisy even our room is cold. so for me, maybe the inside of my ps3 was so dusty that's why it was making so much noise and it overheated. i got the 60gb first launch

but the key, really, is to hunt down those crystal lizards. you can kill each lizard 4 times (5 in boletaria). of course, farming in pure black tendency really helps. and having high luck doesn't hurt.

but farming here is not as bad as farming in FFXII

the only thing i hate about DS is the big trolls in world 5.

Meh, any class is fine to start with, you just have to be cautious. People usually just charge in and hack and slash like it was God of War and get their ass kicked. As long as you time attacks and blocks properly you'll do fine with any class.

Naw man, Temple Knight = Win. His armor is surpassed only by the Brushwood Armor. His starting weapon is kickass too, though since he only has enough starting MP for one heal, you'll have to level up in intelligence.

TK is the only class I stuck with through new game +.

Clearly he hasn't played "a lot" since he's trying to get a +5 falchion. There's so many things wrong with that, I don't even know where to start. By the sounds of that, he only played like 2 levels. And you should never "cash in" a demon soul if there's a possible upgrade. Souls are easy to get, and none of the boss souls give enough souls that it's worth using over upgrading. Also, there's no reason to grind to level unless you just suck. People shouldn't try to write about the intricacies of this game until after they've beaten the game at least once. Most people write articles (and even reviews) after only playing like 2 or 3 levels, and hope people can't tell, even when they make video reviews only showing the first 2 levels, and bragging about a weapon you can get like 2 hours into playing.

This arcticle really does sum up the game nicely.

I was skeptical at first. Very little story, dungeon crwalwer, good but not great graphics (but good art design)...hard...it just didnt seem like my type of game.

Then I started to read up on it. NeoGaf has a great thread on it...I sucked it up and bought the Deluxe....Easily the best decision I have made this generation followed closely by VC.

This game is difficult to review and even harder to understand without playing it. It is true brilliance in the way it is designed. You will say "Dammit, why did I do that" "MORON!" Dont get ahead of yourself..impatience...

The brilliance of this game lies in a few things because it had to to balance out the difficulty.
1) Level Design, the first time through it will take you forever, but once you open up short cuts and know what enemies to skip when you are trying to get back to a boss that owned you, you can get there in a few minutes.

2) Creating a sense of loss when you die. WIth the souls being taken away or losing your body, you have an actual FEAR of dying. As opposed to other games where death means you have a quick load screen and off you go again. It creates a sense of tension througout the entire game.

3) The combat is tactical. Every shield block, swing of your sword, magic cast is a thought out strategy. It is not how powerful you are (though it helps). Yes this is an ACTION RPG, but really it is a TACTICAL ACTION RPG. The gameplay is the best I've played in a game of the RPG nature. Hell maybe even ever.

4) Online, very cool online...It adds to the single player experience. Awesomely done.

All this adds to why we all like it so much. FOCUS. This game requires every ounce of focus and concentration that you have to do well. You cannot kick back on your couch with a beer on the table and play around a little bit. You have to be sitting upright and thinking only of the next swing, next shield block, next enemy. This game requires you to remain patient, cool and collected. When you get frustrated, hurring, impatient the game has you where it wants you. You will die.

Sure there are many other games out there that deserve GOTY for their broad appeal, stunning visuals, and excellent presentation.

But for those who do indeed love this game (And its a love or hate...not, its ok) it will be our personal GOTY and put in a special place for one of the best games of all time.

I've played it and it's repetitive and tough. Not saying that I don't like the game, but it's pretty brutal and after dying ten times on one level, I'm about ready to give up and play Uncharted 2 again. You work so hard for an hour trying to pass a level, you have 1000 souls and all of a sudden you're dead? You start again, only to die because of a stupid mistake and you lose your chance to regain those 1000 souls? That just borderlines on torture. You can die in one hit but it takes enemies multiple hits sometimes? I game for enjoyment, not to get angry and upset.

This guy sounds like the type that hates Rescue (MGO), Elimination (UC2), and Everything (Socom).

Being in an unforgiving world, nowing every enemie is a death dealing beast, and having to use caution and preporation makes this game intense and nerve racking (especially when alive). That's not "boring" in my book.

P.S.

You DO NOT have to "farm" to beat this game. Only if your skill is lacking... Shure you may want that +10 Dragon sword, but you do not need it. Also, grinding/lvling for hours? n00b

Seriously, I know they have had sone dubious reviews (Tho in hindsight I agree with their Killzone 2 score - it was polished but totally unoriginal and generic) and some of their editorials can be a bit out there, but they are a clever bunch of guys writing for clever gamers. Not everyone wants their game news and reviews from hacks spunking their wad over screenshots. At least Edge are properly critical instead of frothing at the mouth at every demo they are shown. On topic, this guy is clearly passionate for Demon's Souls and is an avid hardcore gamer showing some love. His title is clearly supposed to express that the game has made HIM boring, though I can see why some people who are too lazy to read the article might be confused.
DS is owning me at the moment, in body and soul. I'm up to around 26 hours, about lvl 40 I think, and only just beat Adjudicator! I love this game!!! When I got it at Gamestop the clerk said "Have you heard about this game?". I was like "Yep, sure have, been waiting on it". ...among the elite games of the year. I personally find it to be a beautifully built game, which harkens back to the days of "You're on your own, buddy" type of games.

I played it for about 25 or so hours when I decided that it's too frustrating to be worth it for me. I may pick it up again sometime soon, but working full-time leaves little time to be invested into this game.

This is the kind of game you play when you're home for a couple weeks with literally nothing else to do. That way, you have time to recover lost ground when you die inexplicably.
