Xbox 360 System Update – Wireless Adapter WPA2 support

The team has released a system update for the Xbox 360 over Xbox LIVE.

Sometime over the next few hours when you sign in to Xbox LIVE you'll receive a prompt to accept this mandatory update. If you are signed into LIVE already, you may be signed out and asked to accept the update and you'll be back online in a few moments.

This update does not include the Facebook, Twitter, Last.fm and Zune features. Those will be coming to Xbox LIVE later next month. This update adds WPA2 support for the Xbox 360 Wireless Network Adapter.

Do I need a new wireless adapter for this update? Is there really no other purpose?

v1c1ous5706d ago

is to prepare for the new N wireless adapters

Kushan5705d ago

You're both wrong, its so that the EXISTING wireless adapters can connect to a WPA2 protected network. Previously it was WEP and WPA only.

WPA2
Main article: IEEE 802.11i-2004

WPA2 replaced WPA; like WPA, WPA2 requires testing and certification by the Wi-Fi Alliance. WPA2 implements the mandatory elements of 802.11i. In particular, it introduces a new AES-based algorithm, CCMP, which is considered fully secure. Certification began in September, 2004; from March 13, 2006, WPA2 certification is mandatory for all new devices to bear the Wi-Fi trademark.[3]

Kushan5705d ago

The Wifi Dongle was out before 2006. Only newly certified devices required WPA2 support, existing devices could get away with it, even newly manufactured ones of the existing design.
No doubt MS had to add support for this because they have a new wireless adapter on the way and it was just as easy adding support for both as opposed to just that one.

if your damned machine was good enough already you wouldnt need all of these updates, next time finish making the console and user interface before putting it on the market only to have red rings of death and lock ups on games plus pop ups and texturinng during clips, bet they bring back some memmories, costs you enough already making stuff that half works so just get it right and you mite actualy earn some respect that wasnt paid for

What about the ps3 firmware updates?

I mean really, biased on your part much?

DLA2K95706d ago

HAHAHAHAHAHA thats freaking funny!!!! you're complaining about the 360 having a patch when the PS3 has a patch every month of so, mostly to put in features that should have been in it to begin with!!!! (Custom music, trophies, in game XMB...etc.) LOL...WoW......

Serial_EDX5706d ago

DLA, After reading some of your comments. You are no better then him.

Kyur4ThePain5706d ago

While I completely disagree with Zero's tone, he never once mentioned the PS3. You did.

Just leave people like him be. They'll lead to their own demise.

dirthurts5705d ago

They um.. update things...
My computer gets them daily. You don't see me complaining.

Grandreaper99995705d ago (Edited 5705d ago )

Updates are great, man. Chill out.

Without updates, the manufacturers can't add more value to the console you already spent money on.

Think of it like free added functionality. I was pleased with the new Xbox dashboard (not with the mii's though), but hey, the old clunky, framerate destroying dashboard had to go. Better, new UI, free of charge.

The PS3 got a lot of early updates after launch to support new types of audio/video media which I also thought was great. It was also free added functionality. Oh, and in-game XMB.

Would you rather wait for another generation to roll around before you got these free improvements included with new consoles? Or press a buttton, wait a few minutes, and be on your way?

It's when game developers rush out games, and then constantly patch them, THAT'S when updates get lame.

my datel max memory card stopped working :(. Thanks MS

hamsterfist5706d ago

They said that this was going to happen. It is really crappy that they even cared enough. Oh wait, they wanted your cash for their over priced HDD. How dare you not pay them!

Dazel5706d ago

All HDD other than the standard M$ ones from being used from now on.

Kushan5705d ago

No they're not, that only affects unofficial Memory Units (I.e. memory cards). The custom HDDs people make or buy off of ebay still work fine. I can testify to this myself, my 120Gb WDBEVS drive still works just fine in my 360.

It will come out in another 1000-2000 days or so. I’d rather they remake Morrowind. After they added quest arrows, sprint button, making stats lesser and the big nerfs to spells Elder Scrolls has been too simplified. They could change that with ES6 but I don’t have much faith in modern Bethesda. I would love to be wrong

Dear God it's been 4 years since infinite and no official update on anything lol.

Tacoboto2d ago

No official update on anything?

They replaced studio leadership
They changed the studio name
They announced the change to UE5
... all while supporting Infinite

The support to Infinite isn't what it originally should have been but they've still been providing tons of official updates over the years, and as recently as two months ago added a brand new weapon.

GamerRN2d ago

I think remaking Halo Combat Evolved, and going to 2 and 3 again, will help give the studio an idea of how to make a Halo game feel like Halo again

Tacoboto1d 19h ago

Infinite did feel like Halo, that's not what the complaints were...

The complaints were almost literally everything else. Monetization, netcode and desync, the campaign structure, story, and single biome, the weaker-than-expected post-launch content.

InUrFoxHole1d 19h ago

Gotta agree. Infinite felt like halo.

Profchaos2d ago

Dev times in modern days 4 years of silence isn't unheard of when things are running smoothly.

And around 6 months ago 343 did show a tech demo of ue5 using halo assets so it's not radio silence.

Given all the shake ups i am more surprised we're getting anything next year at all.

RaidenBlack2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

They coulda started with Halo 3 remake ... I know Halo CE remaster was not proper with the art style but still, remaking after a remaster seems dull, when Halo 3 and Reach have started to show some age.

PhillyDonJawn2d ago

Yeah I hate they used Halo reach artstyle. Hope this remake feel authentic yet fresh

--Onilink--2d ago

Probably the simplest to work around with. They are reportedly doing it in UE5, so its just as much an Anniversary thing, as its probably the studio getting familiar and setting up their tools and processes in the engine with an actual game, to facilitate the development of the next Halo

Profchaos2d ago

I'm guessing combat evolved has a smaller scope in general the later half of the game features a ton of backtracking and reused assets making it a easier game to remake on a deadline

Its also a better choice if this is the first game to be multiplatform mind you I think it's pretty much a given that anyone with a passing curiosity has played this by now in some way be it pc or brought a used console for a few bucks

darthv722d ago

This will likely come to PS5 at the same time. 25 years of XB.... shared with PS.

Obscure_Observer2d ago

It´s gonna be among best sellers on PS Store next year regardless.

raWfodog1d 22h ago (Edited 1d 22h ago )

I would love to see Lost Odyssey come over to PS5. I would definitely buy that again. That was the first game that I played on my 360. Loved the story and battle system. One of the best JRPGs of all time in my opinion.
