If this trend continues then I'm pretty sure console makers like Sony, MS and Nintendo will have to accommodate this by creating consoles with just Digital downloads in mind. Probably in 2020 we might see "PS5's", "Xbox its over 9000's" and "It prints money" with just digital downloads.
As a gamer and American I'm one of those that prefer physical media but you have to come to the realization that its inevitable that DD is the future. The music and movie industry are starting to lean towards this and pretty soon, you'll see full fledged games on PSN, Xbox Live and w/e online store Nintendo has.
