Good Story!

Nice to see gaming get some positive press from a gaming demographic that is under-represented.

3DS is death of book oriented gameplay

Josie Campbell writes: "Nintendo's 3DS looks great in my bag but doesn't have many games I want to play yet. The 3D looks beautiful but its reduced viewing angle and incompatibility with horizontal book style gameplay is a real turn off."

That would be a real shame if it proves to be the case. I can certainly see why the 3D effect doesn't work with the 3DS held at any other angle.

Would a book game still work with the 3D turned off, though? Without the 3D it appears to be a regular DS screen.

Having said that, book-style games have always been something of a niche on the DS. It seemed to be something which Nintendo encouraged early on to sell the image of the DS as a book alternative to an older generation of players but which has gone with the wind...

With the demise of Cing (the developers of Hotel Dusk) we may not get any more games of that style, with or without the 3DS. It's a real shame.

It's not as that kind of point-and-click visual novels are new, though, it's just that some of them found a nice home on the DS, big enough to make them more than a little niché as they are in the PC market.

However, Nintendo DID mention that not every game would, nor will, have 3D, so I believe some developers will keep on doing that style of aesthetic.

I dae say for games that require you to hold the 3DS like a book they'll disable 3D. Its not like Nintendo have not already stated the 3D can be switched off for all games anyway.

What a pointless assumption this article makes.

It's the death of many things that made the ds great. For example, having two screens with different sizes will make experiences that requires 1:1 size weird. Think about Big Bang Mini, for example.

Also, the touch screen will not be the main point anymore. Remember great games like Elite Beat Agents, when the main screen is the touch one?. You play it seeing the touch, actively using the touch. If you see the games of the 3DS, they're all focusing on the 3D and the superior screen, and not the fabulous game-changing touch screen: Now it's just a big menu. Not a game input.

These things really worries me about the 3ds.

The importance of the equal sceen sizes and focus on the touch screen is a really good point.

3DS revision coming in 3 2 1...now sir, I won't buy a 3DS till that lil thing get nailed, swear these guys will rip another lite 3DS with bigger lower lcd screen.

The 3D in handhelds (and glasses free 3D for TV:s) will only be fully enjoyable once we have holographic 3D. Holograms can be viewed from any angle. But we are probably about 10-15 years away from that. But it is good that they push 3D so the development for even better techniques are pushed.

"I found a setting that lets you disable the 3D function so that a password has to be entered to launch games in 3D mode. It's a nice feature to have, but I really think this should default to off so that parents or older players have to enable it as part of the setup."

Yes yes, brilliant idea! have the 3D set to off as a default on the NINTENDO 3DS.... The rest of the article is just as foolish and presumptive as this statement above. Don't bother
