InsightBits: Brutal Legend Review

InsightBits writes, "From the sights of detailed architectural structures to the sounds that include a vast list of over 100 songs, Double Fine has done a great job in creating a unique and vivid world of metal. The world comes alive with its partially absurd and partially horrific and unique creatures and characters. The type of creatures that include a panther that shoots out lasers (yes you read that right!) I am not a big fan of metal, but even I enjoyed the aesthetics of the game. Unfortunately, this great new world gets overshadowed by shallow gameplay elements."

Ouch. I got this game cheap after using EBay bucks but haven't received it yet. I hear it's pretty good. 6 is too harsh.

*EDIT* @ below
I'll check it out

We all have our own preferences and opinions. We personally found the gameplay to be a bit too simple and shallow. The game is also a little rough around the edges. Also we don't consider a 6 to be for a bad game. Our review guidelines can be found here: http://www.insightbits.com/...

I personally think that the scores in general are inflated. I think the general perception has become that anything less than 85% is not very good. I don't agree with that perception. By inflating scores we are doing injustice to the games that are truly great and extraordinary.

This game...holy heck. Makes me feel old.

gamer78041136d ago

I loved that game. Unlocked every song

MadLad1136d ago

Liked the aesthetic, tone, humor, and action combat.
Didn't care for the RTS elements.

Never cared to finish it.

Yeah they marketed the game like it was a Heavy Metal GTA-ish adventure. And at the beginning of the game that's what it was. The game fell apart when the half-baked RTS stuff came in. I'd be interested in a reboot or sequel, but just go full action adventure and ditch the RTS. There really is something there with the Heavy Metal theme.

I feel you. I just hacked the game to have infinite life/RTS resources

PS360 gen was special, then again it was still the mid 2000s. Everything went to shite in the teens

I think that was the breaker for Doublefine's creative ambitions and their mixing of genres (which was getting kinda stale). It was a nice to look at but it was more of a tribute to the many things Tim loves, was influenced by and has great admiration for....but the forced RTS stuff was like a drinking buddy's "great idea" that never should have come to light. The game seemed a lot more vast, but it ended pretty quickly too. And Jack Black. As much as I don't care for him as an actor (annoying and requires constant attention), this was absolutely made with him in mind and it worked. I mean come on, Tenacious D? For as Metal as this game was trying to be, even comically, it did little more than meow.
