Shadow Hearts – Sequel, Spin Off, Start Over or Stay Dead?

Welcome to this week's, "Sequel, Spin Off, Start Over or Stay Dead?" Each week Diehard GameFAN is going to look at a dormant franchise that was once pretty popular, but for some reason has disappeared into the sands of time. Diehard GameFAN staffers will have four options for what they want to have happen to the series and you can see them in the title of this piece.

This week, Diehard GameFAN is continuing a look at horror themed games for the month of October. This particular series is actually a spin-off from one of the best looking games ever released on the PSX, Koudelka. However where that game was a straight up horror series, this franchise slowly but surely mixed comedy into the franchise. The entirety of this series was released solely on the Playstation 2 and after the third game was released in 2006, the development team of Sacnoth aka Nautilus (Which was made up of old Squaresoft employees who left due to hating how insipid the plots of the Final Fantasy games were) was dissolved and left to scatter to the wind. Still, this trilogy of games is fondly remembered as the best horror RPG series of all time. Let's see what the Diehard GameFAN team thinks should happen to Shadow Hearts.

The first one was decent. The second was amazing. And the third was silly but it had one if not the best turn-based battle system ever created. So amazing that FFXIII is incorporating some of its aspects. Like for example: the launchers and combo system.

The first 2 shared a story but it had an end. The third was a restart (well it was the same world but in a different time and place) but the story was so silly that they should simply restart it again... Like FF.

Good list, kudos for adding Shadow Hearts, Covenant is probably the best Jrpg most people have not played and what an improvement over the first one (plus ties with Koudelka which is an awesome game as well).

jznrpg470d ago

I own all 3 of those games with 2 copies of Koudelka on PS1 just in case one of the four discs crapped out on me . Same with Legend of Dragoon. That’s one thing I want Sony to get back into , JRPGs , action and turned based

Melankolis470d ago

Yep, they should have at least 1 Japanese studio with 2 teams in it specialize in JRPG.

RavenWolfx470d ago

The amount of time I bring up Covenant when referring to amazing RPGs is astounding.

RedDevils469d ago

Still my favorite JRPG on PS2.

FinalFantasyFanatic469d ago

I wish I had played the other Shadow Hearts games, didn't know there was so many until later in the PS3 generation, at that point they hard to get for a reasonable price. I only got to play Covenant sadly, hopefully they'll all get ported to modern systems at some point.

Take a look at the libraries of your favorite consoles. I guarantee you, other than a handful of fighting games better suited on the Dreamcast, PS2 still has the best, biggest, and most varied library. Literally something for everyone. JRPGs on PS1 and PS2 really were special.

Edit: the article basically just lists every single JRPG on PS2 lol

Terry_B470d ago

Nah..it lists only 33 of them. There are probably over 150 ;)

DrDoomer470d ago

Who's gonna tell them that Persona 4 came out on the PS2?

DQVIII would be so good to be added to the new service

PlayStation 2 Classic Shadow Hearts Trademarked In Japan

Universal Entertainment recently filed a trademark for its well-known critically-acclaimed PlayStation 2 series, Shadow Hearts, in Japan.

SinisterMister718d ago

I have a foggy memory of this one. Do remember that it was pretty fun back in the day. That thumbnail reminds me of the upcoming Wukong game. Excited for that one.

jznrpg718d ago

I own the entire Shadow Hearts series on PS2 . Hopefully it’s a new game

RedDevils717d ago

lol same, and I'm currently playing on PC as well.

SinisterKieran718d ago

Article is on point having Dino Crisis and rival schools but i would add...

Parasite Eve
Strider
Devil Survivor
Onimusha
Siren
Fear effect
Megaman X
Jet Set Radio

And those are just the ones i can think of right now.

MadLad972d ago

I remember being really hyped in highschool when they were talking about doing more JetSet; then nothing came of it and radio silence.
Still some of the best soundtracks in gaming.

Another Fear Effect would be awesome too. A very underrated game that not many talk about anymore.

AM_Thorn972d ago

Jet Set Radio was actually on the original list of 10.

https://www.heypoorplayer.c...

A lot of the others were too recent to meet the date cut off I set, I was really looking for series that had been gone awhile.

Parasite Eve had The Third Birthday release 11 years ago.
The most recent Strider game was only 7 years ago.
Devil Survivor 2 was only 9 years ago.
Onimusha Soul released in 2012. I considered not counting mobile games but I was looking for series that publishers aren't even trying to get anything out of.
Siren is close but the last installment was 13 years ago. Honestly was never into the series though so likely wouldn't have made it regardless. Definitely know it has its fans though.
Fear Effect Sedna stunk but was a new game and was only 3 years ago.
Mega Man X I kind of counted as part of the larger Mega Man series, though even if I didn't the new mobile game would probably have kept it off the list.

Lots of great choices there though. I'd love to see a new installment of most of them.

MadLad971d ago

For some reason I got Cold Fear and Fear Effect mixed up when I made my comment lol.

I'd like to see another Cold Fear. Even a remake would be great.

Knightofelemia972d ago (Edited 972d ago )

Xenosaga, Wild Arms, Legend of Dragoon, Chrono franchise with Cross and Trigger, Resistance, Xenogears, Twisted Metal, Silent Hill, Turok, Ar Tonelico, Ar Nosurge, Breath of Fire, Siren, Clock Tower, Kid Icarus, Splatterhouse, Enslaved Journey to the West I love that game such a sleeper hit it so needs a sequel.

garos82971d ago (Edited 971d ago )

My picks would be

- Soul Reaver
- Viewtiful Joe
- SSX
- Onimusha
- Capcom vs Snk 3
- Playstation Allstars Battle royal

Relientk77971d ago

Kudos for putting Tactics Ogre on the list. I have no idea why we aren't getting a new one, or Final Fantasy Tactics for that matter too.

Z501971d ago

For me.
1. Vagrant Story
2. Guardian Herores
3. Tenchu
4. Omega Boost

VersusDMC971d ago

You almost got a new Tenchu but it turned into Sekiro as that was From Software's plan at first.
