Uncharted 2 Causing PS3s to Freeze

Numerous people are reporting freezing issues with Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. Early reports are indicating that PS3s of all makes and models are being affected by this issue.

Just because there is a minor blemish in an otherwise stellar game does not mean that there is a conspiracy to delegitimize it. Apparently a number of gamers have experienced freezing, and I hope a patch is released soon to combat it.
In addition, it really isn't that big a deal.

Luckily auto save put me right back where I was when the freeze happened. This happened on my Slim by the way. On a side note I've beat the game on Hard and it was awesome. Going through it on normal and making bank by getting all the medals. Next task: CRUSHING!

ive had no problems yet but im not far in, you shouldn't ignore a problem and pass it off as something to kill the games buzz if its a genuine problem, i had problems with the first uncharted when i got my slim it just kept crashing, locking up and i had to wait for the 3.01 update, so i feel sorry for those affected who are trying to play UC2.

hopefully they fix the problem soon.

I have gone through 3 times already and it froze on me 3 times.

Same spot: Level 25 right after a very large battle. I had to reset the PS3 and then it started right where I left off. Kinda annoying, but not a real big deal.

Im now only Crushing mode away from Platinum.

I've been playing non-stop since Tuesday. No freezes here. I think people's freezing might be caused by a heat stressed console. Both my 80GB and Slim would do that, but since I moved my PS3 down to the bottom of my TV stand where it doesn't share the heat of both my cable box and stereo receiver on the glass shelf below, it's been performing very well.

I already completed the game and I'm currently playing the game on Hard and trying to collect all treasures and so far not one freeze, flaw or anything. Best game I've played so far. That's just the campaign, don't even get me started with online, it's addictive!

Yeah, UC2 is my second favorite game this gen, behind only MGS4. Actually, I have to say that UC2 is tied with Bioshock for second place. But who cares about my game preferences anyway - they can only be found on the PS3!

I had it freeze, just once. Right near the end after the big battle with a bunch of ppl, after the fight i was looking for where to go and it froze, when i booted it up again the Naughty Dog logo almost froze, but then I loaded the game and was already at the next checkpoint where u just run up a bunch of stairs.

It sounds like the game definitely has a bug, but it's not a huge issue consiering how much its happening.

Uncharted 1 uses to freeze on me at the same spot (in the tunnel escaping the spainards. But it would load up right at that spot. I guess it might have something to do with auto save.

Just finished my first play through and it only ever froze on me twice. Nothing to cry over though. Still a perfect game.

I don't remember which chapter it was, but it was pretty late in the game when I froze. It was inside the big temple after a pretty big fight. Only happened the one time (playing Brutal Legend now, so I can't be a fair judge of how often it will freeze yet). Overall, great game. A little blemish like this is nothing to worry about.

I think it freezes at the same spot for everyone. Happened to me in either level 25 or 26, all I remember was that I was running up some steps and it froze. Switched the PS3 off and reloaded and it worked fine.

Not a huge problem, but a little annoying.

The game is absolutely amazing and I am sure this issue will likely be addressed by an update. In any case, not a big deal at all.

It is amusing, though, to see the way some of the diehard PS3 fanboys flipflop on issues like this. If a 360 game has an issue like this it is blown completely out of proportion. It would be nice to see a little consistency...that's all. (BTW, what games kill your 360? I have played a lot of games on my 360 and it's still working just fine, so what are these games that "kill your system"?)

But get this game guys! You won't regret it. The first one is one of my favorite games of all time so I obviously had high expectations for the sequel, but it has surpassed those expectations in nearly every way.

Gears of War 2 got a pass from reviews with it's completely broken matchmaking issues. Oh wait UC2 isn't a wide spread problem since it doesn't affect everyone like GeoW 2's broken online did so I guess that isn't the same huh?

Stop spinning hardware issues when it comes to the PS3. I mean do you seriously have a clue how foolish it makes you look to do so considering the multiple hardware issues MS had this generation? This coming from a 360 fan (-> me).

I played and completed UC2 single player and played nearly a dozen hours online without one freeze. Do you want me to tell you how many times my (Falcon Elite) 360 froze in the past couple weeks playing SFIV, Dirt 2, NFS Shift and NHL 2010 (in the lobby online)? Check my profile and see if I am lying about playing all those games on my 360 the past couple weeks.

NHL 2010 is the worst game I have run across in the past couple years for freezing. It only happens in the online lobbies though. It never happens during any single player modes.

It froze twice for me but that's not a big issue since I've been playing for like 10 hours at a time! I don't want it to end :( At least the multiplayer and co-op will keep me busy for a loooooong time once I'm done beating campaign.

You do realize that the point he was trying to make is that consoles freeze, right? No matter what console you're on, no matter what game you're playing, the console could just randomly freeze on its own, not necessarily being caused by the game. Even if a game freezes once every 25 or so hours of you playing it, wouldn't that be considered normal? Have your console(s) ever crashed on you while playing a game?

His second point, is that this could all very well be a coincidence. An example of that would be when the 360's NXE update came out. There were article all over the internet about it RRoD'ing or E74ing consoles. But what if it wasn't really the update that did it? What if it was just a coincidence and it was just that console's time to die?

All jmare did was state a possibility. Theres no evidence to support the argument that it IS the game causing the freezes, or that its just the ps3 freezing. You try to claim hes making a spin on it to try to defend the game when all hes doing is stating an obvious possibility. He makes you sick for doing that, but you make me sick for taking a perfectly valid statement and trying to change it into some fanboy argument about defending a game on his console.

Edit: I personally have not had the game freeze on me and i am 90% through the campaign and i've played about 5 hours online. I did however have my ps3 crash when i was browsing the ps store on thursday. PS Store's fault? probably not.

I had been having problems with my PS3 for the past 2 weeks. It would randomly sign in and out of PSN for a while. On the 13th, it was still doing this on occasion but in addition, I couldn't access the PSStore or my Account Management settings, even though I was signed in to the network and could message people on the friends list, compare trophies... After doing a backup I was debating doing a complete system restore vs. restoring to default settings. I chose the "Restore to Default Settings" option and haven't had a problem since.

Moral of the story: How long have you had your PS3/been using it since you've done a Restore of some sort? Just like a computer... the system needs cleaned up from time to time (at least in my opinion). Everyone shouldn't freak out until they actually try taking care of their system. Mine's a 60GB/BC made in Feb 2007/purchased Nov 2007. It's seen its fair share of heat (still does) and the occasional freeze or hiccup, but still running strong!!!

Have you, by any chance, been playing a lot of Killzone 2 in the past two weeks? I remember constantly being signed in and out of multiplayer games and having to rejoin them with my kills reset. I did some research and apparently KZ2 is notorious for randomly booting people out of games. I haven't played online in a few months, so perhaps they fixed it. If so, never mind.

No, I haven't played Killzone in quite a while TBH. My recent problems just started out of nowhere, freaked me out, and then I decided to try to do something about it, and it worked. I probably haven't played KZ2 since the final map pack released... and that's been a while.

Try doing a restore of some sort. The default settings restore is the simplest and doesn't involve a reformat of the HDD. Otherwise if you choose to restore the entire system you'll want to backup to and external HDD first since it will format the drive.

Ive had no freezing but I noticed during the cinematics it will stutter and then the voices will be out of sync. If you pause it, it stutters again and then its alright.

It did freeze on me last night during a multiplayer match. XMB overlay didn't work, had to reset the console. But I'm sure it'll be fixed with a patch soon. The singeplayer game didn't freeze, though, and I played for a couple of hours.

Considering how many copies it sold, I would believe that one or two or even 10 people experienced freezing problems. It happens just because of the Rule of Large Numbers, not because Uncharted 2 itself is causing the problems, but because some failing mechanism in someone's console is causing it. Who cares? A few weeks ago when ODST was released, a similar article was posted. It has nothing to do with the game itself, and more to do with consoles.

It can be either. Faulty coding, even the teeniest, tiniest little coding error can cause a system freeze. That's what bug testing, QA testing, beta testing, and all that good stuff is for.

Yet it also can be a hardware issue.

If it becomes widespread...the chance of it being a software issue requiring a patch becomes much much more likely.

I haven't seen any freezing with my PS3 in this game. Last game that I had freezing issues in was Ghostbusters and not since then. I'll believe that this is a widespread issue once Sony comments on it...that's usually what I do in any situation that posted on N4G.

I'm at the end of the game, for the second time. I've had a single freeze right after an auto-save in the last level. That was my first time through. It did surprise me but I'll live. Fallout 3 freezes on me a half dozen times per session. I've still put a hundred hours or so on that too.

No online issues in U2 what so ever. Haven't tried co-op yet.

i was playing uncharted and several hours later it first started to have issues with audio then after that it fried my 60gig playstation. i don't know if the game is the root of the cause, but it sure seems like it. now i have to pay out of warranty fee to get my ps3 replaced!!!

At the beginning of ch 5 the truck chase cut scene. When I loaded my save everything is very slo mo. (and its not the slo mo in options settings im not that stupid) To fix I had to go to chapter on title screen and restart ch 5, the resave and delete any previous save darta. Since it happened to me at the beginning ch 5 I didnt have to redo anything. This is the bug Im having with the game. Its only happened twice so it hasnt bothered me. Im not here to c omplain im just trying to help someone else if it happens to them and didnt know how to fix it

Sometimes games crash, deal with it. Mine has had no problems so far. In fact my launch PS3 has only crashed about 3 times since I got it. I'm on my 4th 360 now though.... poorly built piece of crap.

seriously, there have probably been at least 60 reviews of the game.....with an average score of 9.7.......don't you think if this was happening that someone in a review would have mentioned it? i remembe similar complaints about GTA4. i never had any problems with that game either.(other than it wasn't a very fun game)

my only problem with UC2 is it's causing a tremendous loss of sleep for me.......i'm sure ND will issue a patch for this. LOL!!!!

I am glad that I am not the only person having trouble. Since I brought the game a few days ago I haven't been experiencing freezing. What happens to me is that the whole game crashes and shuts down my system with a loud beep. I tried exchanging the game for a new one but the same thing happed again. This happened in all tn all modes of the game especially co-op and single player and at different points in the game. I haven't even gotten past the breaking and entering part of the game. Ruining the expwerience and causing me stress.

That sounds like your PS3 is on it’s last legs. If it's in warranty I’d get it swapped pronto, If not maybe it's time to invest in a slim.

turns out, i had put it on a stand too close to my fireplace and it was getting too warm. i moved the stand another 10-12 feet away and i've never had any problems at all since.

Had it freeze on me once, after about 5 hours without so much as pausing. I had just cleared a checkpoint so it cost me the whole of a minute and a half to reset my ps3lim.

It happens at 8:33 on that video above. Luckily the auto-save had saved the game from that point so I restarted my PS3 and continued with the game. BUT when I played through the game again it froze at the exact same position again o_0

Sadly my PS3 froze while playing Uncharted 2 once. I have an 80gig and I've had it not even a year. This game is too pimp! I have about 5% left and it sucks it's almost over but I still have the multiplayer to churn through. So it's not complete BS. It does freeze some PS3's. My friend's copy of Uncharted did the same as well but in a different point in the game. He's the only other person I know that has had this problem. It might not be the game it just might be the PS3 it's self. This is not the first PS3 game to have an issue like this. Maybe it's the hardware?

It has never given me trouble at all until I started playing Uncharted 2. So I doubt it is on its "last legs" as you put it. I don't run my PS3 into the ground like some people do.

It definitely happened to me and I my heart almost sank because it was right after a huge firefight towards the end of the game and I thought I would have to do it all over again, but it just restarted me immediately after. Whew.

I'm not excusing it, but the PS3 is prone to stalls. My 40 gig stalled the very first night I had it when I was playing The Darkness and still does it every once in a while. I don't really complain because 1 it has never caused me any problems other than the annoyance of having to go back and replay a part maybe once every six months. And 2) Because after what I experienced for two years of Xbox one and Disc Read Errors etc, I really don't have much to whine about with the PS3.

I was level 33 in the demo and I'm already level 20 in the game now again. Not ONE single issue EVER. Funny how when something so good and so popular comes around. Its funny how every time a games does great something always shows up to bring it down. Xbox and PS3 freezes. when i bought GOW2 for the box it froze and when i got Uncharted 1&2 it froze. it's not the end of the world i have one of the older PS3's that came out and its still in great condition. If you have over 4 different models of system out with different insides, of course you going to run into freezes and other minor problems.

but with that being said Uncharted 1&2 froze on me 1ea and it still works. So What's The Problem?

i've beaten the game twice, am on my 3rd playthrough on Crushing, and haven't had it freeze on me once.

on the flip side, my wife has been playing the Fallout 3 DLC, and it's been freezing every 10 minutes.

we uninstalled it, then re-installed it, and it seems to be fairing much better, but it still freezes, though much less.

i love Uncharted 2, but i forced myself to take a break from it to put in some hours on Demon's Souls.

even though i don't care much for Trophies, i'm about 13 Trophies away from Platinuming Uncharted 2, so i figured, why not just finish it off?

possibly the best game this generation. up there with Metal Gear Solid 4.

Kojima Productions and Naughty Dog have done AMAZING things with game design this generation. both of their games are unlike anything else on the market, despite the media's obsession with generalizing them with games in like genres. they are insanely unique and a breath of fresh air.

i'm expecting The Last Guaridan and Heavy Rain to follow suit. we need more games that aren't afraid to do some creative, unique things with gameplay and presentation.

Mine froze after a 6 or 7 hour run with U2 and it froze on the last chapter. I got so mad because I had died like 12 times and when I finally beat that battle it froze. Luckily for me auto-save worked fine and after a little dinner time I was able to start at the same point after the battle.

I played Uncharted 2 for 7 hours straight on my old 60gig PS3 yesterday and it didn't freeze up at all. In fact I think out of all the years I've owned my PS3 its only froze on me once or twice. I guess I'm just lucky.

PS3 freezing can happen during any game at any time. Its no big deal it happens, Its happened to me a few times on different games. Doesn't mean anything is wrong. All computers etc freeze. Just reset the system (turn off then on again) and everything should go back to normal, then start your game from last save point. If it crashes at same place every time then disc is probably faulty or if you keep getting freezing a lot then PS3 is probably faulty. Now and again (freezing) dont worry, it happens.

The level with the bridge that blows up on you and you gotta climb up... yeah when I got to the top the camera didn't follow me up properly and when I ended up at the top I fell through the map... I could look upwards at me stuck inside the temple! had to restart the checkpoint... only problem I've had so far with it!!!

Still running my original 60 gig and never had a freeze issue. I wipe mine down, vacuum the vents, and give it plenty of ventilation. Granted some firmwares are glitchy, but still comes down to maintenance folks. Take care of your gear.

Never mind.......On my third playthrough I left my PS3 on for over 6 hours and then it froze....I restarted my PS3 and I got to start at the exact same spot! (Aka this isn't a big deal)
Fourth playthrough! I get to the same spot that it froze before and guess what happened? It froze! (Same exact spot)....So...Cheah....It's not a big deal.
I beat the game on crushing. I pwn newb.
