Top 8 Overhyped PS3 Titles

PS University writes "Every console in every generation has those real special titles that only a fraction of the userbase considers true winners, however, up until release 90% of the console owners said this title would be the best thing since Super Mario. It's inevitable. You pay your $59.99 (if you live in America), you walk out of the store content with your purchase, laughing at your poor friends who'll have to watch you play at your house and you enjoy that ride home. You pull up into the driveway and you've already taken the shrink-wrap off. Meanwhile, your buddies are looking over the instruction manual jealous that you have the latest and greatest. You relish it. You treasure that exact moment and it's one you'll never forget – until you finally slide that disc into your console and start playing."

Wow. I totally disagree with Resistance 2 being on that list. That game was pretty dang sweet with an awesome co-op mode and an enjoyable campaign. The sad thing was that *certain* media outlets were all too eager to make comparisons between Gears 2 and Resistance 2, but we all know which one could only handle a dozen AI-driven enemies on the screen at one time and ended up having massive online server issues and glitches, not to mention a graphics engine that was barely improved from the first game. (psssst...I'm talking about Gears 2)

Jamie Foxx5698d ago (Edited 5698d ago )

i must admit i did prefer resistance 1 for some strange reason

WildArmed5698d ago

I dont think R2 was overhyped at all.
R2 delivered on its 60player mp n 8 player co-op.

I dont get how the author didnt see it delivering on what they said?

GTA IV would top my list by far.
Haze and Lair definitely belond up there xD

Aaron Greenterd5698d ago

A quick look at the pending articles reveals that my checks to certain media outlets have cleared...

Pillage055698d ago

I don't remember resistance 2 being that hyped. I got pretty much what I expected out of it. And yeah I like R:FoM better => prolly the best split screen experience I've ever had. wish they would have done the same with 2 still to this day.

But Yeah I would take r2 out of that list and replace it with Killzone 2. The game delivered but the hype for that game was absolutely insane, and then the sales weren't amazing. Good-just wasn't breaking records.

jjohan355698d ago

I agreed with every game on that list. I love my PS3 and its exclusives, but the games on that list weren't great. Resistance 1 was a classic. Resistance 2 never lived up to the first game. It became an arcade shooter in which the online versus mode was a chaotic mess, wave after wave of respawns until the match ended. I did however enjoy the world that was created in the game. That was its strongest point.

Marceles5698d ago

Yeah Resistance 1 was better to me, Resistance 2 was a little hyped because of the first trailer that many thought would be in-game. Both Resistance games were good, but I just loved the first one mostly because its story and more epic moments to me than Resistance 2. R1 was also more difficult to me while I was able to blaze through Resistance 2 in the same day on Hard.

While the multiplayer was great I think there was too much emphasis on it to compete with COD4 and Halo, while the main appealing thing about R1 to begin with was the storyline and how great it looked with so many things happening on screen at once. I just felt like alot of heart was taken out of it and I had more amazed moments in R1 than R2. The only time I said "WHOOOAA" on R2 was my first time seeing the Titan on co-op, and that was during the beta.

Blaze9295698d ago

I agree about Resistance 2. I loved Resistance 1 and I remember the launch window for Resistance 2 had everyone going crazy and there was definitely hype. I didnt actually get a chance to play the game until a couple of months ago and I was VERY dissappointed. Didn't even beat the game yet, I just don't like it.

ReservoirDog3165698d ago

Don't agree with R2. I don't like playing online but I loved the co op in it.

And just no to GTA IV. It was slower, more serious and just not as crazy as the previous ones. But it also had one of the best stories told in a video game. Games are art? Just look at GTA IV.

jadenkorri5698d ago

first, you don't include multiplate games, 2nd resistance 2, right, it delivered exactly as the first plus new features, Haze i agree with as the only one on the list which was over hyped and failed. Lair was amazing, and I finished with the sixaxis controller, no dual analog dlc, i think people weren't ready for the sixaxis and probably that turned alot away from enjoying what i think is a great game.

R2 was still great, but it felt different than R: FoM. It felt like Insomniac tried to make R2 more like other popular games like CoD4.

Here are my reasons why R2 disappointed me:

At first I didn't mind the weapon wheel being removed but after a little bit, I was pissed at how much I missed it!

I don't like how they changed the pacing. Before the game was released they kept talking about how they improved the pacing to have ups and downs but that it ruined the intense action feel that R: FoM had. In the first game, it was nonstop action and so much fun to pick it up and play any level over and over again.

Why the fvck did they remove split screen?! R: FoM was probably the most fun split screen I've ever played! It's right up there with Mario Kart 64. My brother-in-law come to visit once a month for a week and every single time he visited, we beat R: FoM together on super human.

Honestly I didn't think R2's bosses were any special at all the first time through and went back and replayed them all, I realized how they were actually pretty bad. The swarm and Dadalus were awful and the Leviathan battle was like an interactive movie.

It didn't have the high level of replay value that R: FoM did. I played the whole R2 campaign a second time to unlock Super Human but all of the slow parts made it so boring to me. I finally unlocked Super Human, played one level and never touched the campaign since. The Chicago level was awesome but the rest was only "good". Every single level of R: FoM was awesome and I literally have beat close to 30 times but R2 just didn't have that "OMG this is so awesome!" feeling that made me keep playing the first game over and over.

R2's co-op was fantastic but I HATED the competitive multiplayer! It was just a ridiculous grenade fest and I hated how your heath bar regenerated very slowly. Not to mention that since I played co-op a long time before I played competitive, the matchmaking always paired me up with super high ranked people with everything unlocked who would LAARK me constantly.

Overall, R2 was a very good game (8/10 IMO) but to it was a huge disappointment. It was not overhyped at all, but I personally set my hopes way to high.

*Cries in corner*

I didn't like many of the design decisions Insomniac chose with R2. I missed the old weapon wheel. I missed the old health bar. I hated the main antagonist and thought they ruined what made Angels so awesome. I missed the narrator, I didn't like Hale as much. Some of my favorite enemies were MIA or very rare. I just didn't like the story in general and wished they would have explained more about the Chimera rather than taking it in the weird direction they did. I was also disappointed in the graphics, slightly.

But even after all of that, there were times where I was grinning ear to ear. The game was just fun to play. I'm not sure if part of that was nostalgia from Fall of Man, but for some reason I just had a blast playing R2. Take from that what you will.

mal_tez925698d ago

I've yet to play a game with a co-op mode as half as fun as R2's. Left 4 Dead comes close but is still outshined.

The amazing enemy and weapon design also helped, as well as a terrific story, but the gunplay was a bit mediocre. Not Halo bad, but not Call of Duty good or Killzone 2 perfect.

HammockGames5698d ago

- Best launch title ever made IMO.

- Some of the best online multiplayer I've ever played, from when it launched right up to this very day (I still play this over most other online shooters).

- Criminally underrated and under appreciated by most media types.

Even with all the extra trimmings Insomniac threw into R2, I still love R1 more. And I can't wait for R3...

mastiffchild5698d ago

Nothing wrong with R2 that bringing back the posh bird narrator wouldn't have fixed, imo. Great, great ending as well esp for the middle game of a trilogy(compare the ending to the crap that passed for an ending and last boss battle in Gears2 FFS!-not that I don't love that game as well!)which mainly exist, no matter what great intentions the devs have to be bigger and have MORE of everything than the first while setting up for the final installment.

Under these undeniable circumstances just where did R2 fall down? Yes, people missed things from FOM-I did. The splitscreen, the weapon wheel, the more realistic tone > BUT and like this one in caps it's a big one-just how did the almost universally praised Gears2 which R2 is often unfavouravly compared with do beyond the first game in that series? Well, it borked the multiplayer completely and added very little in the SP campaign either. Again, I'm not bashing Epic's series as I'm a big fan but think R2 was unfairly treated when you think of the lag free 60 player multi player and peerless co-op campaigns for up to eight players. Added to that the SP, for a middle game, has a great story, some breathtaking set pieces and, as already stated a great ending which ranks really high in my books and makes it very interesting to see where they go with the third game.

IMo,it just gets way too much stick. Also it got the short end of the release schendule stick to allow KZ2 a free run in the new year and, in the critics minds was put up against Gears2- a media darling with a media darling(whatever you think of Cliffy B the media DOES lick his bum-and that's from someone who'd written extensively to stick up for the guy)lead developer. The unfair treatment didn't stop there either-R2 had faultless performance online whereas, in all honesty, Gears2 online was, and still is to a great extent, a mess and did this affect it's meta? Course not but somehow R2 is over hyped? Gimme a break it couldn't get a fair hearing at the time and to drag it back up now is daft in the extreme.

Overhyped my ass.

tripewire5698d ago

Was Resistance 2 overhyped? Maybe a little.

Was it a bad game? Definately not.

The problem with resitance 2 in my opinion is that they tried to make it too much like Halo, or COD or any other FPS. Dont get me wrong, Halo works for Halo, and COD works for COD (MW and HALO2 being amongst my favourite FPS's) but the charm and soul of the original resitance was firstly, the weapon wheel and how opening it paused gameplay. This was balanced so well with the rest of the gameplay that it let you feel slightly superhuman without making the game easy.

Secondly the narration by the hot british lass (quite the oxymoron but I regress) was a good way to convey the story. It gave Nathans actions a feeling of monumental importance, that someone would be dictating his final known hours amongst all of thoe who had fallen in the war for europe.

Unfortunately I think Insomniac took to heart to much alot of the hate that the gaming media was leveling at Sony at the time. It was there, but it was maybe somewhat deserved after some of Sonys arrogance. Reguardless alot of complaints were levelled at Resitance due to these two things and Insomniac unfortunately went down the path of trying to placate the masses. We were left with a game that ticked all the boxes, but was missing its soul.

I am hoping beyond all hope that Nathan Hale is alive and well (clones....im sure I saw clones....) and that the british lass and weapon wheel make a return.

TheDeadMetalhead5698d ago

The author had to resort to using 5 multiplat titles? Really?

also, Resistance 2 is great. 60-player team deathmatches offer much more entertainment than what I've ever gotten out of Halo. >.>

FACTUAL evidence5697d ago (Edited 5697d ago )

Why are multi-platiforms up there?.....And I disagree with resistance 2, if you're my psn friend you'd see why...I would play R2 all day before i play something over hyped like COD:W@W. NOTE: I love MW. Oh yeah, what's that site again?

Most of these aren't exlucives BUT RESISTANCE 2?

That didn't get 1/100th the hype of MW2 and I doubt it's 1/100th the game

'While it’s great to be the savior of America, I’d rather do it in a title that matters…like Modern Warfare.'

It'd be nice if you completed the story... instead of deciding the ending :P

Play the CO-OP and COMPETITIVE and trust me Resistance 2 offers more re-playability than most games, it was well made, well designed, fun and it had depth.

MW singleplayer wasn't all that, the onlnie was fun but if it was singleplayer only it'd be not as widely spoken.

Alcon Caper5698d ago

Afrika should be added to that list.

Alcon Caper5698d ago

BIG TIME. Maybe not in recent months, but back when the first trailer hit in 2006 (E3, I think), that thing was crazy hyped. It was supposed to define a new experience for the PS3 and bring balance to the other trailers that were released--Lair, Motorstorm, MGS4 (teaser), and others... It was supposed to redefine realism in video games through the animations and behavior of the animals. Mind you, this is back when it was an untitled project.

...ok, maybe Sony didn't create a lot of hype through advertising...but the hype that was generated by the trailer lived on for years. Then it slowly died away--I thought it was vaporware. And now that it's out, it's a perfect example of too little too late.

Too bad too, because I was one of those that was convinced that it was going to change the perception of gaming by educating the players and "wowing" with graphics and realism.

WildArmed5698d ago (Edited 5698d ago )

really? I dont remember any hype, even from the reveal day of africa.

But.. just maybe.. K2 belongs up there too.
(I'm not saying it didnt deliver.. it did.. just not upto the hype it had)

kornbeaner5698d ago

Back before the launch of the PS3 Afrika was way hyped even though nobody knew anything about it other then those damn animal looked insanely good for a Videogame. The hype did die down after the PS3 started building up a great library of games, but definitely Afrika hyped.

Ragnarok5698d ago

I actually think "you" just hyped Afrika more than I remember anyone since 2006. ;)

Four, unless All-Pro Football 2K8 is exclusive as well.

And what the guy's talking about isn't hype, the publisher talking up a game, advertising, but fanboys talking it up. Their expectations even if they don't plan on buying it. Which is why fanboy hype is worthless.
