Uncharted 2 deserved a perfect 10 from IGN

Gamesthirst Articles writes: Ladies and Gentlemen, it is here. A game that has taken the industry to new heights with stellar storytelling that leaves Hollywood struggling to match; graphics not seen on any other platform, gameplay more polished and refined than the best of them, and a cinematic experience so real, you would think you're not playing a game, but rather, battling it out among thieves in an action packed big budget feature film. Oh, don't take my word for it, let's take a read at what the IGN reviewer (Chris Roper) had to say:

Well seeing as I haven't played it myself (only the multiplayer beta) I can't judge.

Pandemic3949d ago

It actually deserved an 11/10 but you know, you can't please everyone.

...

R2 9.5
Batman 9.3
Uncharted 2 ???? 9.5?

No sorry. It shoulda been 9.8-10

IGN had two options if they want to their restore their credibly with gamers:

1. Come out and admit their 10/10 GTA4 was a terrible mistake and review the game without the fanboy goggle on or money hats. And score adjustments to a few other big name titles they handed out gift review scores to.

2. Score Uncharted 2 on the same absurdly generous scale they did with GTA4 - ie. 10/10

Pick one IGN. Your credibility is zero if you make it blatantly obvious you have different review scales and criteria depending on the game and platform.

It doesn't matter if Uncharted got 1/10 or 9.5 out of 10. What does matter is that all games are review on the same scale and with the same criteria.

"Well seeing as I haven't played it myself (only the multiplayer beta) I can't judge."

That has nothing to do with why IGN's silly review score is getting laughed at by gamers.

A site's review scores have to be internally consistent. You can't grade one title on one scoring scale and a different title on another scale.

If you take off points for something in one game, you damn well better have taken off points in every other game for that reason.

You can't just out of the blue decide that you no longer want to give out 10/10s and start to review games on a harsher scale and leave those previously reviewed games with 10/10 scores.

Otherwise your review scores mean nothing and are nothing more than worthless fanboy garbage like the infamous Dan Hsu Gears of War review:

Meh, I just don't think their score matches the great things they had to say about it. They say it's not perfect, but that it's closer than any other game out there, and it still scores the same as Resistance 2 and Gears 2? Yeah OK...

Pretty damn far from important, though. Not the first time, and certainly not the last.

Seriously? 9.5 is a good score. Nay. A great score. I can't believe people are actually upset by this. Why don't you let this measly 9.5 actually ground your expectations a bit? If a 9.5 is too low for your expectations, you're setting yourself up for disappointment. Believe me, I've been reading all the reviews. I know how easy it is to get carried away in the hype. But when I read "9.5", I thought "Oh yeah, it's just a game."

I don't care what your reasoning is, GTAIV, Resistance 2, Halo 3, etc. It doesn't matter. They've played it, you haven't. Like it or not, a reviewer can just say "Well it just feels like a 9.5". I think inFamous is a solid 8.5, but I'd be pressed to find reasons why I took a point and a half off of it.

If you see a 6 or a 7, go ahead, raise Hell. But a flippin' 9.5? Grow up.

Let it be known that Uncharted 2 is the most anticipated game on my radar. The only thing that comes close is God of War 3. Think about that.

whoelse3949d ago

Well GTA IV certainly didn't deserve 10/10 from IGN!

It is hard to give a 10/10 score for a game because there will always be something that is not perfect.

Johnny Rotten3949d ago

oh I get it, because a 9.5 is not good enough...

morganfell3949d ago

No Johnny, you do not "get it".

King_many_layers3947d ago

a 9.5 is not good enough when you compare it to their words in the review. more namely the closing comments.

"No, Uncharted 2 is not perfect, but it's closer than pretty much any other game out there these days." Which would go a long way to include games which are easily more flawed such as GTAIV, their review of GTA is going to come back to keep biting them repeatedly. It was nowhere near the 10 that it was handed.

and as they said in it's closing comments: "A "10" is not a score we give out very often. In fact, the last time we gave a 10 to a console game was Soul Calibur in 1999. A 10 doesn't mean a game is perfect -- it means a game is pushing boundaries, expanding a genre, and doing many things to a level so far above and beyond its competitors that they overshadows any flaws. Certainly, GTA IV has some issues, the most noticeable being the occasional flaw in the cover system, but there are many more pieces of GTA IV that are better than anything I've seen from a game in the past decade. We don't give 10s often -- just to games that merit the score."

So how can they say that the game has close to perfect presentation, amazing visuals, brilliant sound and voice acting, some of the best multiplayer for them personally, yet give it less than previous games ??

I call playing it safe. I don't think that a 9.5 is a bad thing, I just think that other scores from their past marked against their own words, make Uncharted 2 sound like a cut above, yet the mark doesn't show the same.

morganfell3949d ago

As I said in another thread, it isn't the 9.5. It is the fact they gave a 10 to GTA IV.

Now let's indict them with their own words:

"A "10" is not a score we give out very often.

You can easily pull the "GTA IV" out and drop in "Uncharted 2"...except where it says the cover system is flawed. The cover system in U2 is the best I have ever seen.

And face it, the cover system in GTA IV wasn't just flawed, it was an out right joke to call it a system in the first place.

You need to calm down. How can a grown man be upset over a review from a website on a game? It isn't like they are the law that will determine whether or not it can be sold. It is their opinion of the game, that is it. If you do not like it, do not visit their site.

morganfell3949d ago

If you do not like what I say then do not read it. After all, it's just an opinion, right? Grow up. See how that works against you?

And when publishers start providing copies of games for review to reviewers that have a set standard they follow then I will hold my tongue. I don't have a problem with 9.5. I have a problem with less well crafted titles getting a 10.

bnaked3949d ago

@SprSynJn

We are NOT upset! We just discuss a problem.. You are bashing against Morganfells opinion, so i think YOU should grow up and let the adults talk about this topic..

SprSynJn3948d ago

I see no adults here. I see older children upset about something so trivial that it's embarrassing to reply to it. It's one site, one video game website! You two should be ashamed of yourselves.

Well I can't approve of a blog like this, and it is a bit ridiculous to complain over a 9.5, which is a great score... but I see where he's coming from. The review was absolutely glowing. I mean, is it really just 0.1 better than Killzone 2? Is it really no better than Resistance 2? Is it really 0.1 worse than Halo 3?

These numbers with the decimal places get so arbitrary and ridiculous. And then there's the time factor. Is today's 9.5 the same as 2 years ago's 9.6? Is it better? Are these things relative?

I think it's a much better idea to have smaller increments of scoring. 9 or 10, take your pick, but once you get into tenths of a point, the works get muddy. How do you quantify one game as a 9.5 and another as a 9.6?

morganfell3949d ago

You quantify and qualify the review based on their (IGN's) very own clear and concise reasons for which they give a 10 and I list that statement above.
