How Did Mirror's Edge Influence Need For Speed: Shift?

Kotaku: You wouldn't think Mirror's Edge would have much in common with EA's upcoming "authentic" racing sim Need For Speed: Shift. But it does, and here's how.

When chatting with Need For Speed producer Jesse Abney recently, as he showed me the PS3 version of Shift, I was struck by how effectively the virtual cockpit view portrayed a genuine sense - not just of speed - but of immersion in the body of the driver.

Shift has a fully articulated driver model in the cockpit view. You can, as you might expect, look all around with a nudge on the analogue stick. More than that though, the camera is actually mounted on the driver's head and coded to react to the physics system. When you accelerate, the force pins the driver model back in its seat, and thus the camera too pushes back; it's the opposite when you brake, as you'll feel the camera slam forward. When you crash, you'll feel the disorienting effects of your head bouncing around in the cockpit. Everything is calibrated to reflect what a real driver's head would be doing while racing at top speed.

The funny thing is that the game seems more realistic than either GT5 or Forza 3 with the dynamic camera in the c0ckpit view. The feel that you're driving a boat are long gone on Need For Speed: Shift!

http://www.youtube.com/watc... Just try to ignore what happened at 8:04, it just didn't happen. LoL =)

Another thing to note it's the size of the cars outside when you're on the c0ckpit view. In GT5 and Forza 3 the cars look like they are too small but in Need For Speed: Shift they look well scaled.

Yeah, I'd take NFS shift over GT5 or Forza 3 any day.

Dirt 2 and NFS:S are on my wish list for racing games this year.

EA Cut Dead Space's Marketing Budget to Pour Into Mirror's Edge Due to Mock Review Scores

Former Visceral Games devs reveal Dead Space's marketing budget was cut in favor of Mirror's Edge because of mock review scores.

I wish EA would just release a DS2 remake. DS is my favorite horror game and DS2 is the best one in the franchise. But because DS1 failed to meet certain numbers EA scrapped the DS2 remake. SH2 remake was great rumors are Konami might be asking for another SH remake. The RE2 remake was great EA just needs to give it another try. But all they seem to do is shitty sports games that are no different from the year before. Change a few players, add different uniform colours, maybe change a team logo. Wash, rinse, repeat.

goken171d ago

Agreed. DS was great. But DS2 was even better. Would love to see a DS2 remake, though I would love to see a DS4 even more.
The problem with EA is they make easy $ from the slight changes to their sports titles like football FC games (whatever it’s called nowadays). People just lap that sh1t up.
Comparatively, games like DS which don’t sell 10s of millions, can’t sell them team player add ons and all the like, would seem a hassle to make and unappealing comparatively. Especially when you consider that most EA non sport titles haven’t actually performed well recently.

Dark Souls 2, Darksiders 2, Dead Space 2, Death Stranding 2, Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2

The Dead space remake was so good. Better than the original. Shame they won't remake 2.

I loved the original dead space but the remake I just found boring. Game design has moved on and the game really showed its age, just small area encounters repeated again and again.

I bought Dead Space during launch window and I never bought a Mirror's Edge game .

Inverno170d ago

Then they went on to screw both games over.

UnbreakableAlex170d ago

I'd rather see a new and great Mirrors Edge than another boring Dead Space.

Bioshock still looks fantastic, one of my all time favorites.

Yui_Suzumiya870d ago

Beyond: Two Souls on PS3 can compete with modern day graphics.

SonyStyled870d ago (Edited 870d ago )

Same as Killzone 2 and 3, uncharted 2 and 3, Infamous 2, Heavy Rain, Resistance 3

jasonismoney870d ago

I wish this was entirely true, but you might want to load up Killzone 2 and Resistance 3 again.

SonyStyled870d ago

@jason I watched some gameplay videos of KZ2 and R3 on my full screen. They are on par or succeed graphically to the first person shooters mentioned in the article that also launched on the seventh generation of consoles. Try the same and see what you think

cthulhucultist870d ago

Killzone 3 was super impressive! I could not believe the graphics back then as I was regularly pausing the game to stand in awe looking at the surroundings! Resistance however did not impress me that much. Heavy rain is also another amazing graphically speaking game. It almost felt next gen

Fist4achin870d ago

I always thought the first 3 Gears of War games looked great and still hold up for today.

SonyStyled870d ago

They did for their day. I recently played gears judgement with on the 360 and the draw distance was so blurry. The characters up close look great though

JEECE870d ago

Far Cry 2 was awesome. In addition to having demonstrably better physics and AI than later games in the series, it had a lot of design decisions that, criticized at the time, have since been praised in games like BOTW and Dark Souls.

iNcRiMiNaTi870d ago

It might not be super amazing by today's standard but I thought Mgs3 looked really good

JEECE870d ago

In terms of art style it still holds up.
