Release of the Week: Wolfenstein -- GamesAreEvil

GrE writes, "Since the dawn of the first person shooter, there has been Wolfenstein. Wolfenstein 3D is often given credit for the beginning of the popularity of first person shooters on the PC. Millions of Nazis have died in the name of the Wolfenstien series. Heck, even millions of Zombie Nazis have died in the name of Wolfenstein! Now, while modern shooters have evolved beyond killing just Nazis and Zombies (by including Aliens and Terrorists), all shooters owe a big debt of gratitude to the path paved by Wolfenstien..."

This game looks like it could be really good as long as it is not the same dev team that worked on Wolverine.

CrAppleton5359d ago

I didn't even know this was coming out this week. Dammit, now I need to buy it.

supercharger51505359d ago

didn't know either but I don't follow PC gaming too closely.

PrimordialSoupBase5359d ago

It is the same dev and the game is not very good.

Neco5125359d ago

Have you gotten to play it yet?

RealityCheck5359d ago (Edited 5359d ago )

The game comes out tomorrow and still no official review... not a good omen. That means even publications and sites hungry for early hits would not compromise themselves to give it a slightly inflated score; again, not a good sign.

StanLee5359d ago

This game will suck. I'm calling it now. A day before release and not 1 review for this game. The developers and published didn't send review copies to the press. That's a bad sign.

PrimordialSoupBase5359d ago (Edited 5359d ago )

I have been playing it. While it looks and feels good, just about everything about is joyless, as if even Raven were bored with making the game.

There is no forward thrust, no interesting mechanic, and even at the highest difficulty setting it offers little challenge.

RealityCheck5359d ago

@1.7 So it's not terrible then, just not great? Would you rate it as average? Below, above?

What recent game would you compare it to?

Thanks for taking the time to share your time with the game with us.

PrimordialSoupBase5359d ago (Edited 5359d ago )

It's heavily modelled of of Call of Duty, with comparable guns models and a nice feel to the shooting - and a HUD that's been totally stolen from Infinity Ward.

The problems is that there is simply no driving force to the action, with few locations or set pieces inspiring any reason to clear the next room of bad dudes. Modern Warfare has the pull of punctuated action, BioShock has the pull of a great antagonist: This has nazis with awful accents.

Enemies offer no challenge, their weak AI made worse by the fact that you can run head first toward them without dieing... on the hardest difficulty setting.

It's an average bore, but I can maybe see the tight controls translating well to multiplayer. That's just a guess, of course, as I honestly don't care to find out.

I am kinda looking forward to seeing more retro franchise come back as next gen game titles. What would be some other good ones?

supercharger51505359d ago

lol! "Millions of Nazis have died in the name of the Wolfenstien series." Probably shouldn't find that funny but I do.

Spolodaface5359d ago

Ooh, I love Raven Software's other games so this should be awesome!

Neco5125359d ago

Even Wolverine? That game was garbage!

PS360WII5359d ago

You can't take one game a dev made that was bad and then brush them off as horrible. Look at From Software. They have a bunch of really bad games yet they still have a bunch of good games.

Evil Rant Monkey5359d ago

I actually enjoyed the Wolverine game. The movie, on the other hand, was brute.

Haly5359d ago

Seems to have crept up on me. Looks interesting although probably a rental for me at some point rather than a purchase.

Wolfenstein: Killin’ Nazis Never Gets Old

Sometimes, you want a relatable villain who makes you question your own morality. Other times, you want Frau Engel.

It got old tbh. Machine needed a break from the IP. Indie is a good reprieve.

Scheiße! Nein.
Return to Castle Wolfenstein is the best in the series. After that:
New Order
New Colossus
Old Blood

I really wish they'd remake Return to Castle Wolfenstein from the ground up. Easily the best of them all.

MachineGames Proved It Was Worthy Of Wolfenstein By Fixing Bugs For Id Software

Speaking on Wassup Conversations, Matthies told the host that once MachineGames was founded, it didn't have enough money to hire a full development team and pitched around ideas for a while. Eventually, Id Software offered the team a chance to work with their IP, but first, they needed to prove themselves.
