Valve "Trying To Work Out" Cross-Game Play Between L4D1 & 2

TVG:

Valve's VP of Marketing, Doug Lombardi has revealed to TVG that the developer is looking at providing cross-game play between the original Left 4 Dead and its incoming sequel.

Such a feature, which would allow players of the original Left 4 Dead to play alongside other users running Left 4 Dead 2, is one of the demands made by the now 37,000 member strong Left 4 Dead 2 boycott group on Steam.

This is Cool but also weird at the same time.
If they do make Cross-Game available this would further prove the fact that L4D2 is Indeed just a New edition of L4D1 with more content (eg:Weapons,Maps,Characters)

does anyone think the same as me? if you dont and disagree please explain why. : )

JL5827d ago (Edited 5827d ago )

Actually I pretty much agree. At the risk of getting flamed, this is exactly what it makes it sound like. Also you have the news coming out that user-content for L4D will be compatible with L4D2 just sounds...um...suspicious...? Really does make it sound like there's nothing more to this game except extra content. I mean I heard from people that the first seemed short on content and too short, stuff like that. Then you start getting people talking about L4D2 came way too soon. I mean it's all starting to look more and more suspicious really.

I mean the whole cross-game thing is kinda cool, but it seems there's a bigger story here when reading between the lines. As you put it, just...weird.

KingKionic 5827d ago

Or maybe ...valve trying to protect there franchise just in case those "boycotters" wont buy there...game...

*busts out laughing*

JL5827d ago

Maybe, but the question still remains to be begged: Why are the two games so incredibly similar that they're THIS compatible to do stuff like this? I mean it's like L4D2 is nothing more than a packaged update or an expansion for L4D. (not sure if you were being sarcastic or something there, or just laughing cause the second game might not sale)

KingKionic 5827d ago

L4d2 is far,far from a update of the first one.

Its a new game. Valve are just good devs and wanted to try something different.

JL5827d ago

Which is fair enough. I'll give it that Valve is good. And indeed this is something new and cool that they're trying here. I just thought it all looked a lil suspicious. And in light of all the grief they're catching lately, this isn't going to help causes. I've already seen it around the net where people are starting to raise the same questions. Anyways, the backward compatibility thing going on here is pretty cool though.

KingKionic 5827d ago (Edited 5827d ago )

If you`re worried that it is a update maybe you should wait till the reviews come in.

:)

5827d ago
JL5827d ago

@Kionic
lol Oh I'm not worried so much. Doesn't effect me either way.
Btw...it's "you're worried" not "your worried". Sorry, I know, I'm being a grammar nazi. I just got a thing for you/you're and they're/there/their. I'm obsessive-compulsive too, so that doesn't help the matter lol

Btw....what is ^that guy on about? "@mods, try harder"???

KingKionic 5827d ago (Edited 5827d ago )

fixed.

But this is a great idea. Valve might be on to something. This is kind of like evolving player`s to play left 4 dead 2.

:)

I think he`s referring to mods in left 4 dead ...rofl.

Natsu X FairyTail5827d ago

roflmao @ ''try harder next time mother F@ck3RS''

SpoonyRedMage5827d ago

Theyr'e making it backwards compatible to shut up the boycottes I think because the boycotters said it will divide the community which obviously isn't true.

JL5827d ago (Edited 5827d ago )

Ok, last comment that I'm allowed on here, no more bubbles to use after this.

While I do mention that this will seem suspicious to some people (maybe even rightfully so), it is a nice idea, I will give them that. Especially with all the criticism as of late, this could indeed help eventually convert those skeptics over to L4D2 like you say Kionic. I mean I can definitely see the chance to do that. Afterall, you got one group playing the L4D, then you have another group playing L4D2 and they're all playing together. Then you have instances where L4D2 will offer things (ie maps) that the ones who stuck with the first game can't get into. After enough times of being left out in the dark, so to speak, when online friends who have L4D2 move to one of the new maps, maybe the person who is clinging to the first will be like "To hell with this, I'm getting part 2 so I can continue on playing every level with my friends". Something to that effect could indeed help to convert those skeptics.

On the other hand though, I can see arguments about people kinda getting ripped off here, or why those "skeptics" are indeed of the mindset that they are. Like MRV's comment below (seems a bit 'spiteful' almost) but at the base of it it's a valid complaint I think, since most people I know that have played it did in fact say it was lacking on content. I have even had a couple friends saying they loved the game, but in the end it really shouldn't have been a full retail priced game.

Anyways, that's all for me on this thread. Y'all take it easy.

edit: What Spoony says there (if that's been a big complaint of those boycotters) does indeed add some added value for Valve in doing a move like this, for the reason of eventually converting them like I was talking about.

DeadlyFire5827d ago

Its not like its not a tactic you don't see every year from certain EA games. EA Sports only really changes a few things every year for their games. They have gotten a little better at it over the years. At first though it looked almost the same every year.

karlowma5827d ago (Edited 5827d ago )

Definitely agree w/ 1. More proof that this is a glorified map pack. So was Left 4 Dead. Has Valve even done anything to the Source engine since HL2 Episode 2 (minor tweaks)? Serious question!

Valve try and make out that L4D 1 and 2 seem different by saying they are trying to work out some cross game platform, when in-fact content wise neither game is a $60 games only together should they be due to the lack of content.

Kushan5827d ago

Easy solution: Make L4D2 an expansion pack. That way, anyone who has L4D2 must have all the L4D1 content. This is how PC games have worked for years and years and would quell the people complaining as well.

SpoonyRedMage5827d ago

The problem is that there's more content in Left 4 Dead 2 than there was in Left 4 Dead so if it was an expansion pack it would be bigger than the actual game and I don't know if it'd mess up the AI director because Left 4 Dead 2's is much more powerful.

y0haN5827d ago

Mess up the AI director? WTF are you talking about? Just because it's an expansion doesn't mean it will use the same binaries.

themyk5827d ago

you would think a sequal would be so much different and better that it would be incapable of cross game play. but i guess when a sequal comes out less than a year after the first, i mean how much better can it be?

but u have to say it would be cool if all games could do this somehow. i think it's very cool if it works.

Natsu X FairyTail5827d ago

your comment isnt the bit fanboyish. Why in the Open zone may I ask?

Defectiv3_Detectiv35827d ago

Further evidence that this is just a glorified expansion pack.

People crack me up that defend L4D2. I think its obvious that since valve doesn't have any other games to release this year they are trying to pan this off as a full game. Got make that fiscal quarter look good somehow. My question is, what the hell are they working on besides this?

KingKionic 5827d ago (Edited 5827d ago )

I guess everyone`s taking some pills...

Left 4 dead two has more content the first ,with it`s improved ai.

There`s no dlc..no expansion.

Just a game.

timmyrulz5827d ago

I say fcuk them (the 37000 sad gits who have nothing better to do than sign petitions)

If this is the case i want my fifa 08/09 to be cross playable as well as my Madden 08/09 and all of my need for speeds etc

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

ChasterMies420d ago

Some of these low paid video game “news” writers weren’t born before 2007.

just_looken420d ago

Here here

Those that were around before 2000's i am sure are like me that think we entered a world of non readers or those that follow without question.

I can not wait to see fallout 3 a goty game even though it was about water with non content until you add the dlc/updates then you got the performance/crashing

CrimsonWing69420d ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker420d ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo420d ago (Edited 420d ago )

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing69420d ago (Edited 420d ago )

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Profchaos420d ago (Edited 420d ago )

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.

Gameseeker_Frampt420d ago

Just about every year in the 7th generation was great and something we most likely won't experience again.

2009 for example had Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age: Origins, Uncharted 2, Halo 3: ODST, Killzone 2, Borderlands, Bayonetta, and Demon's Souls to name a few.

just_looken420d ago

It still amazes me we got over 7 rockstar games ps2/ps3 but 3 for the ps3/ps4/ps5

Dragon age 1-3 and mass effect 1-3 in 7ish years what a generation.

Most Offensive Video Games That Would Never Cut It Today

Times are changing, and these games would have never been made in today's climate.

wealthofgeeks.com
thorstein458d ago (Edited 458d ago )

Every single time someone uses this phrase whether it's music, movies, books, comics, video games, etc it's always the same claim.

The ubiquitous "they" won't allow it to be made. And every decade these claims are made the claimant completely ignores all the "offensive" material that is published when the claim is made.

In ten years, you can write a new article about how you can't make games like Helldivers 2, Resident Evil VIII, Mortal Kombat I, Dragon's Dogma 2, Alan Wake 2 etc etc etc any more.

MrBaskerville457d ago

Yeah, people wouldn't be constantly outraged if there weren't games that people found enraging. The whole SBI discourse shit wouldn't be a thing if all games were inoffensive. A game like Starfield can make a guy froth at his mouth, so there will always be room for a list like this.

0hMyGandhi457d ago

Normally, I'd be inclined to agree with you, but there are massive caveats.
TV shows like Venture Bros, Ren and Stimpy, and Aqua Team wouldn't/couldn't be made today. Hell, Ren and Stimpy was a *children's* show, same thing with Rocko's Modern Life.

It's not for some arbitrary reason, either. It's branding and IP alignment. Companies are far more risk-averse than they were when I was kid in the 90's. Of course, you have companies coming out of the woodwork to hell spur on similar content, but remember: Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon and some incredibly provocative material.

And for movies? it's pretty obvious. American Pie/Wedding Crashers/Eurotrip among many other "raunch coms" have fallen out of style, and are absolutely outside what the modern day film industry is willing to stand by.
Ace Ventura 1 and 2, Dumb and Dumber, Freddy Got Fingered, Rat Race, Harold and Kumar, and Van Wilder follow suit.

Remember: I am not explicitly talking about films put onto streamers. I am talking wide-releases in actual theaters. Same thing goes for games: Carmageddon, Duke Nukem, Manhunt, Six Days In Fallujah (with their original concept), Hatred, and so on and so forth. Of course, I'd be inclined to mention most tactical shooters like Rainbow Six and Joint Ops as well, due to cultural sensitivity regarding *who* you are shooting and why.

And not all of it is bad (obviously). Tastes change, and perspectives change to fit the demographic.
I should add that I'm a lefty, living in L.A. Working in film.

thorstein457d ago

The Boys, Invincible, Jojo Rabbit, Deadpool, Gen V, Last of Us, Banshee... There are plenty of media being made today that people will claim "can't be made today".

Profchaos457d ago

Yeah but if you consider manhunt which was basically a snuff film could you seriously make that game with high than PS2 era graphics.

thorstein456d ago

The Outlast Trials just came out.

But the storyline of Manhunt was that you were executed. But then lived. And if you didn't do as you were told, you'd die. And the people you killed were not innocents.

It was all filmed by a psychopath.

As we speak GTA VI is being finished up for a release. You get to play a Bonnie and Clyde type of protagonist who run up against the law.

Bodycam looks so real.

People are making those games. Articles like this will always exist no matter how incorrect they are, no matter how many times they blame "them" for whatever it is "they" do to prevent "those" games from being made.

ZycoFox457d ago

The UK is the biggest junk country pandering to that nonsense as well, with laws against free speech and expression to match. It got so bad even Rowan Atkinson made a video on free speech about it.

Now the UK raises the age rating on harmless films like Mary Poppins, it's just a load of pansy weak ass nonsense.

MrDead457d ago (Edited 457d ago )

The right wing Tories have been in power in the UK for the 14 years you know the ones that are "anti-woke", blame them for your perceptions.

Killer2020UK457d ago (Edited 457d ago )

Are these snowflakes in the room with us now?

This is more faux outrage designed to get hits. The consequences are unfortunately creating hysteria amongst those willing to buy into it and blame "them" or "the left" or "liberals" meanwhile the left are kicking off about genocide, actual real world abhorrent acts. Nobody is campaigning to censor this shit.

Huey_My_D_Long457d ago

Not too mention the fact that some of these game are controversial for you know, underage porn and encouraging rape.

So either the guy just came in to comment snowflakes without reading anything, or he is calling people snowflakes for having a problem with said titles. Crazy how much brain rot someone can have.

banger88458d ago

Dead Island: "The early PC version of the zombie game swapped the playable character Purna’s Gender Wars skill with a prototype name, which shouldn’t be mentioned directly. The skill name made fun of both Purna as a character and feminists."

"Feminist Whore" lmao

gold_drake457d ago

ill add one more to the list.
drakengard 1.

its ridiculous tho, especially since they'd still be able to find their place in alot of places in the world. except america of course ha. and maybe Australia.

ppl are so sensitive these days. ha. but it is what it is.

Barlos457d ago (Edited 457d ago )

They're not offensive.

And we need another Fat Princess. Fantastic little game!

Some people just have no sense of humour if this sort of thing offends them. They need to lighten up and stop taking themselves so seriously.

Deeeeznuuuts457d ago

Would love a new fat princess game 🤟

CantThinkOfAUsername457d ago

Games literally about sexual assault, mass genocide, bombing civilians, and school shooting. None of which is satirical.

isarai457d ago

Actually it's about fat princesses

Huey_My_D_Long457d ago (Edited 457d ago )

Its crazy that people are fixated on Fat princess when clearly the list is going over controversies, and not all of them are equal. Like way worse examples but pretend the entire list is like that.
