PlayStation 3 users petitioning for in-game XMB access

While current discussions for the PlayStation 3's recent firmware updates focus on the console's background download compatibility, a recent petition implies concern for the PS3's XMB browser. I would have to say yes, this would be a good idea, quitting a game to answer a message is pretty annoying, but im sure that will change. I'm thinking this will all change once home is implemented, that whole connecting users and games and what not. The divx would be cool, but its a little late for me, already ripped and coverted around 60 dvds. But there is more, so maybe I'll hold off for a bit. Funny how 2 of the top 3 first posters on this thread are notroious 360 fanboys, cmon guys, its ok to let some ps3 news get by ya.

I agree, with the high name artists that are being signed to these games custom soundtracks aren't as important. The music for most games are now good and go with what you are playing. I often even find new good songs when playing games like Burnout. I wanted that feature on my N64 and then only used it on my Xbox for a month and never on my 360. It's more of a cool feature that isn't as needed or cool as it sounds.

They set a precedent allowing custom soundtracks on GTA on the first Xbox. It would be a step backwards not to allow them on both consoles.

access to the xmb during game play would be ok but.... i would like to be able to listen to my music while playing on my web browser. i would also like a BETTER web browser( one that plays quicktime files ). how bout a update so i can use my ps3 joystick for a ps2 game. being able to change the background and have a custom avatar would be cool too . a built in file converter would be a dream come true. sony...can i please organize my videos how I WANT THEM??? How about a visual warning that my sixaxis is about to die in the middle of a online game ( running in circles sucks ). now that would be a update

when you are listening to a song just press the home button on the controller and it will bring you to the xmb, there you can, look at your photos, send messages to your friends or even use the web browser while you are listening to your songs

The PS3 tells you when your battery is running low and also if you look at the controller the red lite will be flashing every second if you are running low.

The XMB during gameplay thing is already on the PSP, so I expect it to be on the PS3 soon. I love these petitions. They're so rude, but helpful.

Custom soundtracks are being left up to the developer. If the developer's going to spend all that money to get these songs on the game, why would you let them use custom soundtracks. I think it should ultimately be the developer's choice. GTA:LCS and GTA:VCS lets you, however. I do love custom soundtracks though. NO MORE POP/HIP-HOP MUSIC...ARE YOU LISTENING ELECTRONIC ARTS???

Isn't it sad how there needs to be a petition for something standard? The CELL processor is supposed to be a beast for multitasking, but we cant even check out messages in game.

as for custom soundtracks.it only works for some games.i'm one of the poeple that likes when a musician comes up with the music for a game.anyone who has heard final fantasy music and games like skies of arcadia knows that it's better.another example:yuzo koshiro.he did the music for sega games like streets of rage,shinobi and shenmue.i like developed music that coincides with the development of the game.not lazy music.take EA TRACKS as an example of poor music.

but for those that like the option,it's cool.as for the xmb thing,i'd rather ps3 had it's own thing,not copy xbox live.sounds more like xbox fans who have 360 wanting this than ps fans.plus,sony's system is only a few months old.give it time.

Microsoft took out RAM and CPU allocations from developers; this lets them have things like in-game messaging and run the full OS in the background. Sony on the other hand gave PS3 devs basically full access to system resources (Cell, RSX, RAM), so there's not much left over for OS functions in-game. It's the reason you have to quit your title in order to access XMB/Main OS functions.

I'm sure they could implement at least a notification system though since it shouldn't take up too many resources. Sony's constantly updating the Firmware with great new features, so there shouldn't be too much worry.

I dont think Sony reserves all the RAM. Developers have been complaining that PS3 has too litte ram. Bethesda said horse armour in Oblivion is not possible due to the limited RAM. Like mentioned, early research suggested PS3 allocates 64mb for the OS. Why do you think we're able to background download in games?

and that document was released in March 2006, a full 3 months before final Hardware was delivered and nearly 5 months before the SDKs were finalized. We already traced it back through QJ, Kotaku, etc. We've heard directly from developers that it's actually the 360 that has a lot of memory and processing resourcees reserved for the OS. The PS3 on the other hand is at a disadvantage because almost everything is reserved for developers; that leaves little room for the cool 360 functions we see, such as a Full OS running in the background.

Hell, the final PS3 OS only takes up 5% of ONE SPE's execution time. Why else do you think that you have to quit a title in order to access full OS functions on the PS3? It's because developers were given full priority.

Then how come the games don't look much better than on the 360? Some look worse even though the developers have had more time to work on them. Don't try to act like the Ps3 is better than the 360, cause it isn't. It might be as good someday, I don't doubt it has potential, but right now it's not. Stick to the reality.

power of the ps3. i dont see how this would be difficult. i would love to pause my game and check my friends list to see one of my friends playing another game. then send him/her a message to come play with me or jsend him a "you suck" message. lol

or pause my game and make a sandwich while listening to the music i have on my HDD. after all thats why its there.

someone on my PSN list sent me the link. i wish they'd do this to the ps3 and psp. i think if people could listen to their music on the psp while they play games, the psp will take off. this issue is my biggest problem with both systems, besides the ps3 not having rumble yet.

Come on Sony what the hell are you playing at? You have released a console over a year after your nearest competition and you still havn't even included all the features that the competition has available. Of course we want music while viewing a slideshow, of course we want our own music in game! Did you really think we didn't?
Sony should have released the PS3 with at least the same features that the 360 has, at this rate the PS3 will always be 1 year behind playing catch up on features, cos as Sony release this update (if they ever do) MS will be udating the 360 with its next set of features.
I think the same goes for the PSN (I live in the UK) and our PSN is pretty dry at the moment (Compared to XBL and even the US PSN) and theres absolutly no reason why we can't have the same content as the US. Why trickle out content on PSN? Again always playing catch-up!
Until Sony pull thier finger out I'll be playing my 360 while my PS3 gets dusty waiting for it to become the (promised) better console if it ever does!?!

Really? I must have missed how you do that (I guess its in options (triangle)). I still stand by my other points tho. I also didn't realise how good the achievements on the 360 are, I know they are only numbers but what they do do is to prolong game life (in some games) and give them more replayability just to achieve these points. I know there will be something similar in Home but its not until I played my PS3 I realised who much I miss the achievement system.
