Britxbox's Mark Lawson writes: "Gel: Set & Match is a cute and colourful "connect-four" puzzle game from Gastronaut, who you may remember from Small Arms on the Xbox Live Arcade. Gel takes a simple puzzle idea and gives it a nice coat of paint along with a strong selection of modes and options to keep kids entertained along with the puzzle lovers out there."
Console Monster writes: "Aside from the fact that Gel has a dead online community there really isn't anything spectacular going for the arcade game. If you are a fan of puzzle titles and want something to play around with for a few minutes then this game will certainly be worth a look. It's got enough of a twist to feel different from your average puzzle game, but nothing to warrant a popular following".
GamePro Arcade writes: "Certain gaming titles don't need to do too much or try too hard in order to put together a decent package. Simplicity, at times, is the way to go. No current game quite understands that concept like Gel: Set & Match, Gastronaut's latest puzzler creation where matching four-like colors is what it's all about. The graphics are nothing to write home about and in-game sounds don't spark you to tap your toes, but the fact the title takes complete advantage of what XBox Live has to offer, it's completely worth your time."
Puzzle games work best when they're so simple that you can tell what's going on just by looking at the screen. The general idea here is to set small coloured blocks of gel disintegrating in a colourful range of scenarios and levels. Your little alien is forced to run around and clear paths, score points, explode obstacles all with the blocks. The trick is to start as many chain reactions as possible and it's extremely fun.
