Splinter Cell devs: We're more immersive than Metal Gear

VG247: Splinter Cell: Conviction has no cut scenes. None. Metal Gear has a lot. We put two-and-two together and asked a Splinter Cell: Conviction developer at E3 this week about that particularly glaring difference between the two series.

Splinter Cell is more closely based on Syphon Filter. Both games are based in some semblance of reality, not the ridiculous, overly fictitious content of MGS games. I guess MGS is a Castle Wolfenstein clone since it was the 1st stealth game huh?

Frankly, I was impressed with the Splinter Cell showing, but it's just too damn early to even start comparison of this with MGS4. I've played a couple of splinter cell games before and i honestly can't remember a single thing about what the story is about. Because it has none. SC series is quite a good one on its own but there is no need to downplay other games for cheap publicity purpose! this also apply to all other games out there! SC started like what...5 years ago? to even try to compare to an over 20 years of legacy of Metal Gear universe is utterly stupid! MG story is not just long but fully in depth and have all these interesting twists that can't be found in any other games thanks to the series running for over 20 years already. Snake and Sam is a cold-blooded agent/spy. Snake stay true for all the series while Sam (after a heavy facial change) in Conviction is clearly after his daughter's killer which screams cliche like a typical movie-like story.

I don't really care about how they want to make it but please STFU and let the game speaks for itself! if it's good, let gamers be the judge! saying such words like this is only making you look like an arrogant prick! What has happened to this industry? Everything has to be advertised as "Better than something else" rather than "Worth buying on it's own merit". Time to say what I see now, I might be wrong and please correct me if I am, but this is how I see it.

As soon as MS stepped into the arena, things went down hill. They couldn't stand not being first last gen so this gen they did everything they could to get first to market, get exclusives, hurl crap all over the competition in PR stunt after PR stunt and generally buy and bluff their way to the top. They don't seem to care about profit, just that they come first.

By the way, this is only in reference to the PR wars and sniping that seems to be constantly happening, I'm not talking about consoles, games, nothing like that. All I'm saying is that MS seemed to have dragged the gaming industry into a dark corner and now none of us can remember what day light looks like.

Splinter Cell had no character story up until double agent. Before that it was all "theres a bomb Fisher", "GET OUT OF THERE FISHER", "This is you last alarm Fisher!" kind of stuff.

What the heck is wrong with these MS game developers downing every Sony game they can? First it was the Aaron, then the Forza developer, now him. Let's set something straight.

1.) Forza doesn't have the right to call itself better than GT. Gt5 has better fisx, grafx, and even the psp version has 800 cars where as Forza 3 will only have half that.

2.) No cutscenes equals bad story. Immersion isnt the only thing that makes a game great. Cutscenes tell the story in an awesome cinematic fashion that can't be done in gameplay. So please... make your games and stop bashing everyone elses.

The Splinter Cell: Conviction trailer looked un-real terrific. Fantastic in fact. All the press is raving about it, this is clear.

And, he's right about immersion. Their "project the story into the action" method is *FANTASTIC*. Excellent innovation in story-telling and immersion, better than the mandatory cut-scene install that MGS players had to sit-through.

Halo 3 had some of this, they used the literary device of having Cortana & the Flood "project" story-projection directly to Master Chief in the middle, in small bits, during the action so it could not "come out" of gameplay.

This new Method in Splinter Cell: Conviction looked fantastic and very innovative.

Its a definate 1st Day blockbuster. Expect to see fantastic things from this game from now until release.

How about we not credit the game that created the stealth genre, that revolutionized story telling and pushed graphics and gameplay to a new level. Take your Halo. That game did nothing except bring a good FPS to console.

The developer is clearly stating that scenes that appear to be cut scenes are interactive roles that you take part in. You're not playing for the next scene as in MGS. You're part of the experience the whole time. Even to the mission objectives being part of the environment. This game has more action than MGS. the cutscenes in mgs4 are incredible and extremely immersive. I never cared much for the mgs series, i just couldn't get into it but i bought mgs4 because of all the praise it received and the game is absolutely incredible. I honetly couldn't put it down and i actually looked forward to the cut scenes because they were so freaking awesome, flawless voice acting, superb graphics and not to mention an incredible story. MGS4 is great.

The Game that butt-hurt SDF is now trying to say wont be any good? MGS and Kojima were the *GREATEST* until he started making Xbox 360 games.

Take Final Fantasy for instance -- the FFS that the butt-hurt SDF thought was so terrific until it was on Xbox 360. Even without Sakaguchi-san, they still said "har har, its only on PS3!". So, for the 12 hours it appeared FFXIV was exclusive it was "at least you dont get FFXIV!"

The inconsistency of the SDF is just hillarious. Kojima is bringing MGS5: Rising to Xbox 360. Deal with it.

Personally, I dont care. I prefer Splinter Cell myself, and Conviction looks *FRACKING EXCELLLENT*.

Those who said that they enjoyed the cutscenes have to be kidding me. Some cutscenes were amazing but most of them were drawn out and boring. When you were introduced to Drebbin it was waaaay too much talking and back story telling. Then the airplane scenes w/ Bunny and Otacon came in to play w/ nothing but drivel. Just way too much talking. How about the 45 minute ending w/ Big Boss....jesus. I actually fell asleep 15 minutes into that. You can only tell so much about a story before people start to get confused or lose interest.

Playing a FPS is absolutely atrocious(for me at least) on the PSP, plus the graphics are worse than a PS2. Ya I get your point... Rising will be good as well, but I am interested more in the MGS story line over Raiden's story line. I even was more enthusiastic when I saw Big Boss photo and so were countless other MGS fans.

And KOJIMA is a BIG factor trust me. A MGS title without him seems unreal and that is why most people are skeptical about this Rising game... Kojima wasn't really showing enthusiasm while giving the interview about the game... That is what troubles me most.... That the devs will screw it somehow without him.
This game might turn out to be a new GOW or Ninja game this gen, but still, speculations will be present until it proves it's worth.

theres a huge diffrence between them. mgs has always been a better game with alot better controls. mgs series got outdated when it hit the ps2 with bad controls and horrible top down camera angles, the only thing i liked about it was the cutscenes and story. even when you look at the multiplayer between them two you see the diffrence right away. splintercell online which is an amazing 'ninja' style cat and mouse game, then theres MGO which is just a bunch of characters just running around shooting themselves in the face and setting down magazines for a cheap ass kill that cant be avoided.

I've always found emotional immersiveness to be greater in MGS... I just don't care much about the characters in SC compared to MGS. And if I'm not emotionally involved, I'm not really immersed, I'm just playing a game. Don't get me wrong, SC is a great game with a decent story, and I really tend to enjoy it, but I wouldn't use the word "immersive."

As I remember, I know since more than a year that splinter cell is 360 exclusive. Furthermore, the best SC were on Xbox/PC platforms because they were developped by ubi montreal, PS2 and Gamecube and others were developped by Shanghai, hence the reason why they suck sh!t. It was told that one of the reason is that the game wouldn't run on PS3 becuse of RAM memory issues, (ubisoft doesn't seem to fully understabd the PS3 because they also have had problems with the PS3 version of Assassin's creed). Plus it was confirmed since 2007 that there wouldn't be a PS3 version. So I am not surprised at all.

The problem is that MS has had several games now that have been "exclusive" until they were available on the other platform in a year, and DLC that was "exclusive" until six months later it's announced for PS3. The PS3 "exclusives" tend to get non-exclusived before they come out at all.

I just don't trust 360 developers (other than ones specifically owned by MS, because Halo for PS3 would just be ridiculous) when they say that. It might lead to me missing games, but I'm not going to buy a 360 when I can't tell if something I want is really exclusive or if I'll just be kicking myself for spending more money in a few months.

First of all, Metal Gear & Splinter Cell are two different worlds now. I can care-less what anyone says, Splinter Cell is badazz!! Snake is old as dirt, smoking cig's and coughing a lung up every 5 mins. I know that line right there fanboys are thinking that I'm hating. Well, I'm not. I loved MGS4. One of the best storylines I've played in a long time. But those cut-scenes were pretty long. MGS4 will forever stay in my game collection.

But Spined Cell storyline and gameplay are different than MGS4. Sam has no help from no one. This game is not about 100% Stealth and gagets. He is disappearing in the shadows and using the environment to his advantage. Sam is going in, kicking & wacking Mofo's like nothing. He punished the crap out of that guy in the bathroom scene. I love the tongue in cheek, the self indulgence, and the cheesy conventions of the series. However at the same time, I still think that even with those points mentioned above, the series can still be considered epic, and great in the story department.

Take a look at MGS2 alone. Despite all the convolution and odd presentation and soapboxing, it actually made some great points about the digital age, information, perception of reality... I can't think of many other games, certainly none in the also great SC franchise, that did such a thing.

The fact that Kojima basically used the conventions of his own series/videogame sequels as a plot point to take down the main antagonists, I'd have to say, is boarderline brilliance. At the very least, the guy knows how to have fun with the fourth wall, even if he is totally self indulgent.

These developers are out of control. Why is it that all the exclusive 360 developers are walking around with chips on their shoulders. The Forza guy kept trying to compare his product to the GT franchise during E3, these guys are comparing Splinter Cell to Metal Gear, and the Natal guy had to take a stab at the Wii. Way back when, Itagaki use to always compare Dead or Alive to Tekken. It's like the people representing the 360 have low self esteem because their products can't stand on their own. They always have to represent the product by comparing it to someone elses. If you are #1 you do your thing and everyone else should follow.

Case in point. Michael Jordan never compared himself to other players because he was the best. Celine Dion doesn't compare herself to the likes of Mariah Carey or Beyonce because she knows she is good. Sony developers make games and new IPs to entertain customers, not to copy and compare to other M$ products.

I own every single thing Metal Gear related that has been released in North America...I have all of Kojima Productions games from ZOE to Boktai...I would even consider myself a bit of a Sony fanboy, and have loved everything Sony and PlayStation related for a long long time. If anything, they seem to be pushing Sam Fisher's character a lot more, ever since MGS4 blew the genre apart.

I happen to love all the cut scenes in the MGS series. Ubisoft can say whatever they want. This is their first real crack at being an MGS clone. I just don't think they should get too boisterous before they even release the game. Gamers will have the final say, not Ubisoft and Metal Gear is some big shoes to fill.

I'm all about the game's success, but don't build the success off hype that it will out-do MGS4, that's something that can be outdone by Hideo Kojima, himself, with little effort.

Which is absolutely no surprise, considering Metal Gear has never done a good multiplayer game in its time here if its life depended on it.

The A.I. I experienced in Metal Gear Online was truly hilarious, like something out of a coloring book!!

Instead of you know, actually do everything in it's power to stop me....it just sort of bopped up & down following a predictable pattern and '!' coming right out of rock paper scissors.

At least the actual humans were smarter then that, by a fraction!!

Oh well, Metal Gear Solid can deliver a few laughs for the boys. If you want the real man's stealth game which actual meat, there's always Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory or the 360's premier, Splinter Cell: Conviction....

Wtf are you talking about?. Theres no A.I in metal gear online because you always play against humans; looks like the only bot is you. Also TRUST me when i tell you that you wouldnt last 5 mins in mgo, it has a steep learning curve (no magnetic aim assist) and requires a lot of additional skills besides twitch shooting with an emphasis on team work and strategy... but whats the point of explaining to someone whos never played it before? /facepalm

PS: Your point about the cardboard box being pointless to hide in would be valid if it were not for the hundreds of EMPTY cardboard boxes randomly placed throughout each map... but again, youve never played it so you wouldnt of known that.

If there's one thing Splinter Cell could learn to borrow from Metal Gear, it's storytelling. Splinter Cell endings are among the shortest and most unsatisfying I've ever seen. Just look at Pandora Tomorrow. The supporting cast save for Lambert are all generic nobodies with no distinguishing personalities or angles. The stories and mission briefings are just CNN political techno babble that foster no emotional attachment for the player. Sam's friend from one game becomes a villain in another *fart*, Sam's daughter dies *burp*, no build up, follow through or resolution to anything. Squandered stories.

Having mission objectives unnaturally projected on walls and floors in SC: Conviction is not the solution. It doesn't make the story better. It's actually the only thing I absolutely HATED about the demo. It's not immersive, it's distracting and unrealistic looking and it stays on the screen until you walk or look away. Reminded me I was watching a videogame. How fake is it to be fighting people with a spotlight shining "kill Sam's daughter's killer" or whatever on the wall in the distance, or a building in the background to be lit up like a XMas tree with a spotlight that says "infiltrate the hotel". How subtle is that?
