Cellius Returns with Evangelion Title for PS3

This is awesome. I loved Evangelion about ... oh 10 years ago. Haven't watched any of the movies, and haven't seen a single episode since then, but about 10 years ago I watched the whole series in 2 days. Hahaha. I just couldn't stop! I always thought it was make an excellent videogame, and I imported a PSone version of an Evangelion game way back when, but it wasn't very good. I still have faith that the franchise could translate VERY well into a game, and I'm hoping Cellius/Bandai-Namco pull it off! Thank god the PS3 is region-free gaming, because I'll probably have to import this game. So many great PS3 games never come out outside of Asia, this may be one of those.

Anyway, I also hope their other projects still exist, too. It would be weird for all those games to just disappear.

Interesting, I was going to watch Evangelion this summer and from what I saw at a convention (few episodes here and there) seems like it would make a pretty interesting game.

Evangelion is just a drama man... Most people watched it because of the robot action and then when they see the real thing they don't like it because this is all a psychological thriller with a bunch of really sick people.

Most people that watched it don't even understand the plot. Not even the creator of the manga understands it... And please, before someone comes and disagree with me go and look for some info or interviews with the creator, Hideaki Anno.

Damn, that's one anime I don't know a damned thing about. I tried to get into it once but there were just to many variations floating around. Tough to know where to start. Sometimes I hate Japanese naming schemes for just that reason.

One of the most intriguing and thought provoking animes ever. I dont what it is, that makes this show so compelling, it just is.

Characters, story, setting, back story, action. NG:E is the Godfather of Japanese animation. Only stand alone movies, Akira, Ghost in the Shell and Ninja Scroll can stand next to it in my book, but its a 20+ episode series, so its so deep.

@Bathyj, I completely agree. I felt the movies were kind of out-of-place and somewhat confusing (and this is coming from someone very familiar with convoluted anime stories). That aside, I think Eva is a pretty important series, and I enjoyed it. It's very different from other series, and Shinji can at times be frustrating to watch, but the overall ideas presented throughout the series are very interesting and you end up finding yourself pulled into it. When they do get into actual action sequences, that's where it tends to shine. It isn't your average good guy beats bad guy at the end of the day kind of stuff. The action is well written, and from the very beginning you won't know what to expect.

That said, all those stand alone movies you mentioned are immensely epic and they all deserve praise. Though I must bring up one series you hadn't mentioned that I believe hands-down should be up there as well, which is Berserk. It's in an entirely different league and genre of anime, but there really is nothing else like it. I don't tend to get too deep into many mangas, but due to how great both the anime and manga are, I've followed that one through every volume and anxiously await each release, as well as high hopes that Kentaro will revive the anime with a second season. Very violent, very intense, and very well written, with a music score to compliment (although you can't help but laugh at the oddly placed opening theme). Anyway, thought I would throw that one out there as well.

But seriously, Evangelion? It's not as if there series was very action oriented. What was there, like two or three fights total. Of course it if comes with a lot of fanservice I'm sure people will buy it for that alone.

If you're going to make an anime game at least pick one that fits like Hellsing or Blue Gender or something that's action centric.

If you follow anime, Evangelion is one of the most popular and well known anime in the last 2 decades. Considering that 3 new movies are in various stages of release, this title is bigger than Hellsing and Bluegender combined. In fact, it would even rival a gundam game day 1 release.

I am an anime follower, and yes I know that Evangelion is extremely popular. But just because it's popular doesn't mean it's ripe for a video game adaptation. Most of what goes on in NGE is character based not action based. It's like trying to make Frost/Nixon into a game, it's not just that kind of property; although I suppose a casual viewer, not saying you are, might think so since it has giant battle robots.

Hellsing, Blue Gender, Gundam, those are all properties you can build long stretches of gameplay around because a lot goes on in between dialogue.

I understand where you guys are coming from, seeing as I own all 3 titles in question. Hellsing has one of the best characters with Arucard and Seras is vastly improved as a character later in the manga, but I'm not sure making a game for it would be easy. Blue Gender doesn't have the popularity to warrant making a game, like other mech shows such as Rahxephon, Fafner etc., it's popularity has seriously waned over time.

I realize that Gundam is phenomenally popular, however, Evangelion as a relatively new mecha show compared to Gundam, and it's maintained it's popularity even though it's been out for over 10 years now (hence the movies 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0).

As a huge Yoshiyuki Sadamoto and EVA fan, I'm optimistic that this could be a great game as long as they focus more on the mecha's and less on the date sim. If you could challenge each angel in the anime in action orientated fashion, while possibly being able to choose the pilot (Asuka, Rei, Shinji, Toji etc.) and the mechs (00, 01, 02, 03 etc.), this game has considerable potential.

Yes, EVA has a deep sociological and psychological based story, but who's to say that Bandai-Namco and Cellius can't just deviate from the story and make it more action based (yes I know it's based on the new movies, but it doesn't need to follow it verbatim). After all, EVA has at least 2 alternate manga's in NGE: Angelic days and NGE: the Shinji Ikari raising project.

There's a reason why every time a volume of the EVA manga by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto comes out in Japan, it jumps to the number 1 spot for sales. I wasn't implying that EVA would outsell a gundam game, but let's be serious, it definitely would rival a gundam as long as it had a picture of Misato, Rei and Asuka on the cover (never mind Shinji). Add a figure of the 3 characters in question as a pre-order bonus, and otaku's could possibly line up in droves for this game.

I've never watch Evangelion series but i know it had a nice mecha-design, even if i prefer the Vision of Escaflowne one. I can't wait to see what Cellius will show with this Evangelion game. But it's certainly a great news for fans.

This game will be massive in Japan, hopefully they do an "Asian" version with eng audio/subtitles so I can import it.
