Sony Says Xbox 360 is Trying to Catch Up to PS3

Sony executives have been known for making some rather entertaining remarks when comparing its PlayStation 3 to Microsoft's Xbox 360. SCEA PR chief Dave Karraker said that Microsoft was doing Xbox 360 Core owners a disservice with the introduction of the hard drive-mandatory Xbox Live Video Marketplace.

While hopes for the banishing of the Core unit remain unanswered, one of the PlayStation 3's bullet points over Microsoft's console was today removed from the list of Sony advantages -- the HDMI output for the highest quality picture possible on HDTVs...

last time I checked the 360 didn't come with anything larger then the 20gb HDD and had no HDMI. On the other hand the PS3 came with both and more.

hmmm seems like if not for the PS3 having better parts MS would not have released this elite system. But the PS3 still has wireless networking and media card readers ALSO it comes with Blu-ray which is for watching HD movies.

The elite is a blatant "Sony can do it, we can do it too". Funny thing is if you listen to Major Nelson(mouthpiece for MS) in his podcast about the Elite he even says they had plans for this Elite since the beginning. So the whole "HDMI doesn't matter", etc comments to Sony were really just to get people out to buy the console. They knew darn well it was important but figured they could keep their system at a low price point and catch all the hardcore fans and then spring this new system on them and they would buy it again.

Its a shame I'll have to wait till next year before they release it. It will have a 200G HD. HDDVD or maybe by then BR drive built in. It will be shiny black, not matt finish and have built in batteries in the controllers so you dont have to keep buying AA's.

The 2009 model will be Xbox Magnifique and will feature WiFi, SD card and Memory stick readers as well as motion control. Cant wait.

Seriously the only thing I hate about this whole thing is I would have liked a bigger HD from the start. I resent that they left out features they obviously intended to put in just so they We were here first and we're cheaper, then everyone makes such a big song and dance about Sony being later and more expensive. If they'd done it from the start they wouldn't have had as much to crow about. I wish they'd just let you put any old HD in like PS3 then it wouldn't be an issue for me.

M$ is turning Xbox 360 into another computer that you are going to have to upgrade every couple years. Sony has planned a 10 year lifecycle for their systems; xbox is planning on a xbox720 in 2011. If you want to buy a $400 console every 5 years instead of a superior $600 console every 10 years be my guest. I know that Sony's lifecycle has never been a full ten years, but it's better than M$ which released the xbox after ps2 then the 360 before the Ps3. if Microsoft adds additional hard drive space and HDMI (something Sony offered on day one with the 60gig PS3), it's all, "It doesn't matter who came up with it first, everyone copies!"

the truth of the matter is that the Elite is the console that Microsoft should have launched back in November 2005, but they were too busy wringing their hands at the prospect of getting a head start in the new console war, so they threw together a largely defective and unreliable piece of hardware, while Sony delayed, and, ultimately, released a piece of hardware that's much more reliable than the 360 (not many crash, freezing, or bricking issues for updating your PS3's firmware so far). sure, it cost more, but look at it this way:

the Elite is $479.

it's main feature is HDMI and a 120gig Hard Drive.

the 60gig PS3 is $599.

it's main feature is a Blu Ray drive, and built in Wi Fi

for $120 more, i'm getting a Blu Ray drive and Wi Fi.

Wi Fi adaptors are, at the cheapest, say, $50.

so i'm paying $50 for the imbedded Wi Fi, and $70 for a Blu Ray drive.

sure beats that $199 extra i'd have to pay for Microsoft's HD DVD drive, and the $99 i'd have to pay for Microsofts proprietary Wi Fi adapter.

and if i need extra HDD space, i just saw on newegg.com a 500gb external HDD for $150 (this tip was given to me from an X Box 360 fan who was annoyed at the cost of the stand alone 120gig HDD from Microsoft). since the PS3 supports USB External HDDs, why not go with that?

the PS3 is the better deal when compared to the Elite. it simply is.

that doesn't mean the 360 sucks (i *do* want one, afterall), but Microsoft just didn't really think this through.

like i mentioned in another thread, it would have been better if they had included an HD DVD drive in the Elite instead, kept the 20gig HDD, ditched the HDMI (so they wouldn't have to eat crow concerning the whole "HDMI isn't necessary," comment), and kept the price at $479.99.

now *that* would have been a package i would have bought. as it stands, i really can't justify buying the Elite. i don't have a 360 yet, and i was contemplating buying one last year, but now i'm glad i didn't, and i have a PS3 anyway that suits my multimedia needs, from gaming, to movies (SD and HD), music, and internet/online gaming.

this is a weird position for MS to be in, and either scenario would have been a lose/lose for them (keep the current two SKUs and risk being 1-uped by the feature packed PS3, or release the Elite, and piss off the 9 million current 360 owners with a SKU that includes things the previous two SKUs should have had).

an easier solution would have been to just put HDMI in the Core and Premium SKUs from the get go, and "future proof" (gotta love that buzz word. /sarcasm) the damn thing. it probably would have only driven the cost of the 360 up a few bucks anyway, but they were so terrified they'd break that $299 sweet spot. and then, of course, you have to consider an HD disc format, for when games inevitably breach that 9gig barrier on a standard DVD.

the 360 is a good transitional gaming device, as it has the power and disc capacity to handle the transitory games (like Oblivion, Bioshock, Mass Effect, etc. games that push the envelope, but haven't really shown us the true potential of next gen), while the PS3 is a console that truly has some staying power. i don't think games will be hitting 50gigs anytime soon, but 25gigs should be more than enough for the next two or three years.

i don't mean to sound like a Sony fanboy, but i've been gaming for over 20 years, and i've learned to consider the long term when it comes to shelling out over $300 for a gaming console. you have to look at your own personal return on investment.

all i know is that, for the forseeable future, i won't have to purchase any add-ons for my PS3 so i can enjoy HD, or access the net wirelessly, or repurchase the PS3 at all because it didn't come with a feature that'd really take advantage of it's HD capabilities (like HDMI). $500/$600 is a lot of money for sure, no arguments from me there, but it's what your getting for that $500/$600, and for how long, that you begin to see the value.

bottom line, i agree with the Sony guy (and man, this guy is a tool, so it pains me to agree), that MS is catching up and validating what Sony has been preaching since E3 2005 (i was there and saw the infamous CG Target Renders that everyone seems to love to bring up, two years after the fact).

i think considering the PS3's performance in Europe, the performance of Blu Ray, as a viable next gen high definition format for movies and games, and this move by Microsoft and the Elite, and the constant bashing and slamming from the media and gamers across the net that "HDMI isn't needed, and neither is Blu Ray," that they've earned a little bit of an "I told you so."

and considering that they've said arrogant things that would make this look like a compliment, i think MS got off easy. as did fanboys everywhere.

i think what really upsets the 360 folks out there is that instead of a $200 difference between the PS3 and 360, it's now only $120, and it's not 100% blamable on the "Blu Ray difference." (considering the inclusion of Wi Fi and memory stick readers).

my advice to them: don't worry about it, your console of choice still rocks. and so does the Sony fan's.

any better. All MS is doing is offering something that customers have asked for. Whether it makes a true difference or not, which I find to be in the eye of the beholder, is doesn't validate the need for HDMI only the want for HDMI. At least MS is listening to it's customers and giving them what they are asking for, for whatever the reason ( and Sony listens to it's customers too, like any good business should)

Both these systems are too expensive for the mass market and it will reflect on gamers at some point when developers start taking less risks and fewer unique products are brought out because so few systems are available that developers can't take chances at losing money. We are all going to be stuck with the re-hashed genres, unless some of these systems start moving in much larger numbers.

...fanbase uptil now. Sony was honest and clear from day 1 because they are really sincere with games industry, they bring innovation and solid technology from day 1. All MS is after is a business term and market share. Can't you see they started with trying to get as many exclusive titles as they can just to be like Sony's PS2 HaHaHa, they are trying to live a past success of Sony in this industry. While Sony is bringing new approaches, they are basing this time on things like Little Big Planet and HOME and its just the start.

Microsoft knows that all 3rd party software is eventually going multi-platform but still they are trying to 'get as many systems sold' as they can on the basis of this piece of exclusive news, now how many of those exclusives really show signs of next-gen, maybe Oblivion, FNR3 and GRAW2 are great but the rest...well you know. There is no procedural synthesis or hardcore physics in 360's games yet, be it 1st or 3rd party...are they being sincere with the consumers...Nah !

Microsoft has a 'dead' system and 22 mill lingering consumers at their back, and they are doing it again with 360. Nothing like EyeToy, SingStar, GameTrak or technically insane games yet. Sony was consistent from day 1 that Blu-Ray, standard HDD, HDMI etc. will be crucial for future...and MS' first making fun of them then eventually acquiring HD-DVD and HDMI is the living testament of their saying, "OK Sony was right, but just don't mention it to anybody". MS don't know what is next-gen, they only think that re-texturing the same past-gen games is what next-gen is all about. They're like "OK, Sony had more games with PS2, so lets buy more games for 360 to be like PS2, people will buy the system, the hell with bringing industry forward".

On the other hand Sony was mysterious, they have been letting exclusives pass this time around, very silently ! Obviouly they have a next-gen plan that is not even guessable by Microsoft's DNA. A simple taste of that plan was revealed as HOME and LBP, the world was WOWed and devs were inspired, just wait and see what great innovation comes up next, its only 4 months PS3 launched and the games are already saying they aren't just texture swaps !!!

Since so many people are interested looking at the last generation i figure i might as well too. Lets be realistic here people wut was the original xbox really? It was essentially a "halo-box". I can still remeber the first night when i attended my first LAN based halo get together with my friends (i can still remember hang em high sniper games and hearing the zoom of the other players and suddenly getting nervous...ahh good times. I was so awstruck that i immediatly purchased and xbox the following week and held my own get togethers. Halo 2 eventually was released and basically redefined online gaming and attracted millions of gamers. Bungie did a amazing and there has yet to be an online service to match it. It still remains the primary game i play on my 360 (7000+matchmaking games, not counting the ones before the stats were reset Gamertag:Tetra Ninja). I enjoyed GOW but found the game variants limiting and eventually got bored. It seems that was the trend...when i looked back on the xbox and even the 360 i seldom purchased games for an of them. I bought halo, halo 2 and fable. And my 360 collection has only 3 games. My point here is looking past all the arguments of hardware, hdmi, HD etc lets refocus to what is the driving for of the industry. It all comes down to software...the games... the 6 xbox games i own to the over 40+ ps2/ps3 games i own. I own and enjoy all three next gen systems. But when it comes to software sony has largest span of games to attract the various types of the people on the gaming spectrum. And eventually in time it will have the largest library.

I'll agree with you on Halo and the original Xbox, but the Xbox 360 seems to be the one that will have the most games at the moment.

I own 4 Xbox 1 games and 8 Xbox 360 games (at the moment).

We will have to wait a few years when the majority of the games are out and announced for all three systems.

Funny thing is if you listen to Major Nelson(mouthpiece for MS) in his podcast about the Elite he even says they had plans for this Elite since the beginning. So the whole "HDMI doesn't matter", etc comments to Sony were really just to get people out to buy the console. They knew darn well it was important but figured they could keep their system at a low price point and catch all the hardcore fans and then spring this new system on them and they would buy it again.

The PS3 hard drive is removable just like in a PC. You can upgrade it with any off the shelf 2.5" Notebook HDD.

Um, yes, it is detachable. Just because it doesn't have it's own EXTERNAL ATTACHMENT doesn't mean it isn't detachable. Have you ever worked on a desktop? Would you say the HDD isn't detachable? Would you say that if the HDD went out on a PC that you need to replace the whole PC? No, you wouldn't. And if you did, you would be 100% wrong. Yes the PS3 drive isn't external and more difficult to get to. And yes, it is detachable. Maybe portability isn't the greatest for the PS3 HDD, but definately detachable.

I don't know which bandwidth the average US-users have. I know that here in europe the majority still doesn't have enough for a download of 25GB. So I - and I bet many others - really do want disc-based contribution.
And when the bandwidth is increasing, there's still no problem for me, because the PS3's HDD is replacable very easy (and for much less than what MS offers).
And as I said to Mart: This topic is about hardware-specs! NOT about online-features, NOT sales-figuers, NOT about games!

Please people... The Elite 360 is just an 'option' for people that want the HDMI, bigger hard drive and what not. Current 360 owners can still buy the 120gb hard drive whenever they want. The majority of people don't own an HDTV and probably won't until the next generations of consoles roll around so what it all comes down to is the games, and right now the 360 is the console to get if you want to play good games. Sure some good games might come out on the PS3 in the future, but why should I have to wait when there is already a big library of games on the 360? Why should I have to pay for a Blu-Ray player I don't want or need?

it's not like Everyone that has an Original 360 is embracing this new SKU because still, not everybody has HDTV's,1080P HDTV's, or is going be doing the IPTV thing. Fanatics are making themselves sound like fools, as if the Xbox360 is still not the best HD gaming system out right now. It is still on top regardless of the Upgrades. The game lineups is still dominating, Per MS to release the console early, it's still selling pretty well for a second generation Console.

is that digital downloads for music is fine, but for videos, i think its out of the question. when the market adjusts to the HD standard, 120gb (or 60gb) won't nearly be enough to hold videos and movies. thats why i think disk media will play an important role in the future.

and for all the people complaining about HDTV saturation in the market; isn't the FCC requiring all broadcasts to be in HD by 2008 or 2009? (feel free to correct me if i'm wrong). you'll need a HDTV to receive regular programming. if not, have fun watching snowflakes on normal broadcasting channels :-p
