Complicated PS3 platform discouraging second-tier game developers

Sony's PlayStation 3 (PS3) platform is, in comparison with that of Microsoft's Xbox 360, technologically too complicated to facilitate development of supporting games by second-tier developers, according to Taiwan games developers.

The PS3 platform imposes a technological barrier for second-tier game developers because these developers, including those in Taiwan, do not have as sufficient financial and technological capabilities as leading international developers, the sources pointed out. This partly accounts for the relatively limited availability of PS3-specific games, the sources said.

In contrast with the PS3, the Xbox 360 platform is easier for second-tier developers to produce games on, the sources indicated. In addition, the Xbox platform makes it easier for them to develop console-PC cross-platform games, the sources noted.

PS3 could have potentially stronger hardware functionality than Xbox 360, but many users feel that, for the same game, PS3 video quality is no better than or even inferior to Xbox 360's, the sources indicated. The reason for this is possibly that game developers are willing to invest more effort to achieve optimized performance from the Xbox 360 because these games are a more important source of profitability, the sources pointed out.

Do some research about ps3 games and exclusives and you will see the games are there, you'll also see that it's moving gaming forward.

Both are great consoles and both have great games coming for them.

The only reason I would buy the ps3 is because of it's up and coming exclusives...they excite me a lot. Not that there aren't games that excite me on the 360. Bioshock and Mass Effect oh and Too Human. Oh and of course Ninja Gaiden 2...but I'll enjoy playing Ninja Gaiden 2 and Bioshock on my ps3.

Seriously, calling game developers 'lazy' because they consider ROI, return on investment, before commiting to a new project is ridiculous, uninformed and infantile.

Game developers, professional game developers, are businesses first, fans second -- regardless of personal preferences, likes and dislikes.

Reality dictates that projects that can be completed with a minimum of capital investment weighed against potential high return are the projects they will choose to accept.

In other words: If it requires too much time and money to make then it's not going to happen.

Microsoft laid the groundwork with its XNA Toolkit. The wisdom of that particular commitment is paying off. It's as simple as that.

For us it's not a question of being easily to develop for, that's a relative term. When we first got our hands on the hardware it took us a while to get back into the flow of working with Sony, because they way they do things is a little different. The developers that say it's too hard to develop for and complain about it are missing the point. It sounds like an excuse to the consumer to us.

What many fail to realize is that by employing Microsoft's powerful XNA Toolkit, developers can develop games for the 360 AND PC simultaneously.

SIMULTANEOUSLY is the key word. The beauty of the XNA Toolkit is that it creates code for both platforms at the same time. It also optimizes and compresses code, graphics and sound files as well. Developers can get more bang for the buck by creating Xbox 360 -- AND PC games with little more effort than it previously took to develop for either individually.

THIS is why developers are choosing the 360 as the preferred development platform. The potential return on investment (roi) is greater. They can target the 360 AND the PC market in one fell swoop.

Developing for the PS3 however is a singualr affair; to port a game to either the 360 or the pc requires much more effort.

Yes the PS3 is harder to develop for then the 360. Sony and developers have already stated this so this is not news. However the PS3 is also easier to develop for then the PS2 was and Sony has made real efforts at providing developers with better tools and resources this time around. Also this time around Sony is allowing for developers to create smaller games like Flow that can be sold over the PSN. Thus providing an alternative way to learn to program and design games to take advantage of the PS3 without having to spend 20+ million dollars. The financial cost of developing a big title for either the 360 or the PS3 is a huge barrier to small developement companies regardless how easy or difficult the system is to develop for.

So all things considered I think Sony has done a good job of providing developers different entry levels to creating games for the PS3, with much better support then the PS2. Of course no one wants to here that, instead its just so much easier to put up more negative crap about Sony and enjoy the hits to your site.

Everything comes down to money. People have to be paid.

Some development teams just don't have the financial backing to support the PS3 right now.(Sony did not make it any easier either), They have the worst tools. Sony never been known to be an excellent communicator, when it comes to listening to developers issues.(I'm sure first, and exclusive parties get well taken care of).

While it takes like 15 mil for a solid game..imagine the small developers out there that never even see that in profit. They are always in the hole. Now the PS3 cost too much, which will slowdown the installment base sales. Also with poor communication/developer tool issues, it's a big gamble for small firms.

-Remember what happened when Square , Capcom, Konami, and alot of developers left Nintendo because of the PSone platform being easier to produce for.(A lot of that was on Nintendo for staying with Cartridges), but still Cds sold like hotcakes..

Small developers just can't take 2 years off and wait..while EA can.
