Capcom explains why Resident Evil 5, Street Fighter IV did not release for Wii

A few days ago, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime posed questions about why Resident Evil 5 and other Capcom titles were not releasing for the Wii. Chris Kramer, communications director for Capcom, has answered Reggie's questions and explained that both RE5 and Street Fighter IV were developed "for high-definition graphics systems."

I think the Wii could not handle RE5, sure, they could downscale the graphics to the level of RE4Wii, which would be perfectly fine by me, the controls would also be better, in my opinion, as I didn't really like the controls in RE5. However, if I learned one thing from Dead Rising, it's that you can't have many decent looking enemies on screen AND a good draw distance at the same time on the Wii (atleast, they failed to achieve so in DR). RE5, from what I've played, peuts you against more enemies than in RE4, much more. Also, having a low draw distance in a survival horror game is a no no, I believe you know why.

Finally, a Wii game on a 40" + flatscreen TV is rather ugly. It simply is. I'd rather play on a CRT TV rather than on a LCD one, if it's a large screen. It's like when playing a PS2 game, the flaws aren't as evident on a non-HD TV.

I agree with most of what you said, however, playing the Wii on a large to very large HDTV (let's say 42" and over) doesn't really show the game on a good light. All of it's visual flaws are more visible than ever. Like I said, it's like playing your PS2 on it, it will display of course, but what you'll see won't be looking very good, the textures, the aliasing, etc.

IMO, when playing on a lrge display, Wii games will actually look better on a SDTV than on a HDTV. However, on medium sized ones, playing on a HDTV at 480p can also be very nice.

I understand and acknowledge this, however, just because one owns a HD tv is seriously not a reason to shun those games that have potential when it comes to "gameplay". Yes visuals can "help" that immersion but that doesn't always have to be the case.

At home I have a SD in my room and HD in the living room, I play my wii games on my SD tv(and PS3 on my HD tv), but once i have my own HD TV hell i'll hook up my N-system allong with my PC( playing pc games as it should on a freaking big TV, o and emulation xD)...Seriously i won't ditch the Wii just because i have a HD tv. It just seems illogical.

The reason I brought a 52" HD TV was not to watch TV Shows not to watch dvds or Blu Rays The reason for me was so I could play ps3 and 360 in HD. When I first got a 360 I did not have a HD tv and really could not see the difference from my ps2 that is when I brought my first HD tv and what a difference I could finally see the value of a HD console. I have seen a ps2 and a friends wii playing on my tv and they look horrible for me I cant go back to SD gaming I am not shunning the wii i play it a friends places and will buy one when it goes a least 720p. Street Fighter IV could be ported using the Tatsunoku vs. Capcom engine. The Wii can run that, and from what I've seen it looks pretty good.

Now what they really need to do is release BIONIC COMMANDO (2009) and make the Resident Evil Classics motion controls actually help with the shooting.

Resident Evil 5 sold about 3million on HD systems. When you put them together.

Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition sold about half of that 1.5 million and it has already been released on two other systems.

Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles sold guess what so far 1.26million.

That is crazy huh? You would think more hardcore gamers would get it on the HD systems right? But so far the HD console break down like this.

both games barely sell over 10k units a month now after 2 months on the market almost. OUCH! What hell is wrong with the HD console gamers! Why are you guys not buying these games and then screaming the Wii is a toy, well are these games toys to you? Are they just not good enough?

I mean really the games look good on HDtvs but you could also argue not many HD console are hooked up to HD tvs. Every one knows the HD tvs sits in the living room and dad paid for it and then think, how many hardcore gamers are dads and how many will still spend hours fighting some one in a cartoon like SF4? I would wager not many because SF4 is not a casual core game you will wipe the floor many many times till you get good.

Any one can sit some where and snipe but to fight online is like exposing your self to a real SF tournament.

I believe Wii onwers like this type of test simply because mario kart has sold over 12 million or so copies while countless skill-less reviewers claimed it was unfair and they would never play it. Now why would the casual gamers play this? They wouldn't and if they did they wouldn't be casual very long if they wanted to compete.

Can SF or REs evil 5 get that many people to buy their games, maybe maybe not. Yet if they never port it then they get 0. I've shown they can get almost the same amount of copies bought but just making a good Wii game.

In the end I wouldn't want a port in a prefect world I would rather a revision or console port. I mean this in a good way. To those that played double dragon on the XLB you know what the arcade version of that game looks like yet double dragon 2 on the NES crushes it. That right there is the console effect. There was no way in hell the snes was suppose to do turtles in time yet large parts that made the game fun a pretty made it to the game.

Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom show capcom can make a pretty SF game for the Wii. They have a few engines now that can make the Wii look pretty good yet this is the point they don't have a ton of competition, yet but that is happening as we speak.

The only real reason why you don't want these games on the Wii is because you
A) hate capcom and believe they are crapcom
b) you don't want to see what a Wii with hardcore AAA efforts would do to HD console sales.

I understand you concern because if they make these games and other for the Wii hardcore gamers will buy them. The same happened with res evil 4 on the powerful GC and the mpeg1 like port to the PS2, yes it was that bad. It didn't matter people still bought it. I think capcom will figure this all out and actually their mind is already made up. The games listed where planned many years ago now tell me what is coming out from capcom for the HD consoles in the next year? ........ that's a lot of silence. Maybe Capcom should just make games on the "toy" system since most of you don't play games. You seem to want a sim with ok art. Yes we all know a supercharged Gamecube in a new case can't run real games.

Wii Sports and WiiFit sell more then Halo 3. Why? Wii Sports is integrated with every Wii, many people only playing that buying no games. They didn't want to waste dev time/expenditures with an entirely different team making a wii version. The story would have to be different. The sound would have to be different. The controls would have to be different. The graphics would have to be different. Shall I go on............

Why the Wii for the next Monster Hunter? I'll tell you why I think they did it :

The PS2, the PSP and the Wii seem to be seen as similar concoles to alot of Japanese publishers. You often see a Wii game being on either the PSP or the PS2, as well as a PS2 game on the PSP or vice versa. The Silent Hill remake announced for the Wii has also been announced on the PSP for example, and MS:Arctic Edge is also set for a PS2 release, or so I heard. You can pretty much use the same assets on these 3 consoles, with the Wii>PS2>PSP in terms of graphics of course.

So I think they simply wanted to keep the dev cost as low as possible by going with the Wii (Wii games are usually cheaper to produce) as it also allowed them to use the old engine (or did they make a new one?). Also, the Wii not being known for it's power, it fits MH, as monster hunter games aren't exactly what I'd call games that achieved technical excellence...

Finally, the 360/PS3 don't have a very large install base in Japan, never forget where MH sells.

Not many Wii gamers(well those just with a Wii anyway) think RE5 could have easily been ported to the Wii. What they don't get, though, is why Capcom are giving them worse than nothing after they supported RE4(which was an old game when the Wii , and best, version came along) AND UC(which was only fanservice, and according to Capcom not what they'd do next time). DR:CTYD was insulting and Darkside Choronicles is just what they promised they would not do-another dose of UC-weak, slapped together on rails nonsense when their best Wii game was the over shoulder RE4 port.

The DC game apart Capcom are also doing remakes of 1 and zero(IIRC) but when they could easily have (or almost as easily)made a new game(maybe a RE5 spin off?)for the series with Re4 gameplay and updated GFX these seem like another copout. Don't really see why a version of SF2HDTR(swapping the HD for ED wouldn't have been possible either)when the visuals on the upcoming MH3 are as good as anything on Wii ever.

I guess the difference is they plan to put a heavy charge for MH online so they put in the effort for that knowing Japan will bite their hand off for it and it's cheaper to do on the Wii than PS3.

So as far as Capcom, and the Wii, go its sloppy reheats or on rails nonsense that they wouldn't dream of inflicting on PS360 gamers. Unless you want to pay for the Wii online service as then they'll give you MH3(after the lag on SSBB good luck with making that work to a standard you can charge for Capcom)that is.

It isn't Nintendo's fault that Petz is on their system. It is 100% Ubisoft's fault. Nintendo makes great games every couple of years, like Mario or Zelda. They and their first (and second) party developers know how to make good games on the Wii. HVS is also doing a very good job, by letting the setting be controlled by the player. Third-party developers (Excluding Capcom, Sega, and EA) gimp on the Wii because they think it is as powerful as a PS2-GameCube, which is very retarded. And some third-parties (3D Realms) refuse to admit that they were wrong about the Wii. And some third parties are in the air (id).

Nintendo Wii has a much lower average game rating than PS3 or 360, and it has more games getting a 6/10 or lower than 360 or PS3.

The Wii is a "it" item, a trendy impulse buy. SNES was Nintendo's last great system. A Link to The Past is still one of my favorite games. The Wii however, doesn't nearly have the lineup of PS3 or 360. Sorry, but its true.

I love RE5! The only thing I don't like about it is that stupid voice that says "Resident Evil, Five!" I hate games that announce the title. If I remember correctly, Street Fighter IV does the same thing.

Anyway, Nintendo should release a HD console soon. Too bad it's just a rehash of the Gamecube, just like the DSi is a rehash of the DS. They just keep rereleasing their consoles and people are fine with that because it sells. I'm glad I got rid of my Wii. Now I'm a PS3 guy.

I had a Wii. I bought Twilight Princess, Mario Galaxy, Boom Blox, and some other games. I had Metroid Prime 3 but didn't play it much, only an hour or so. I sold it because I lost interest in it and I wanted HD graphics. If you don't believe me, then that's your problem.

I also owned a DS and had Castlevania, Mario 64, Mario Kart, Brain Training (dunno the name), and some others.

I even owned a PSP. I sold my portables because I never used them. I also owned a Gamecube and NES. Don't say I don't support Nintendo.

This is the reason why a lot of the multi-platform titles are not released for the Wii: it is simply not next-gen. The only thing changed about the Wii is the motion sensing controller, that's it. It's essentially a Gamecube with a wireless controller.

Perhaps next generation Nintendo will pull their socks up and realize that, in this day and age of technology, it's all about high definition technology. Sure, they have relatively good success as they stand right now, but come on... they would have a lot more if the Wii sported PS3 graphics and online capabilities.

So in other word the gameplay is not impossible on the Wii ( AND ESPECIALLY STREETFIGHTER ).

So his reasons are just basically full of shyte.
No one asked for the same level of detail in both games, so "porting" these games from ground up is not impossible. After all it was just the GFX that was the case here.

Re4 did extremely well with IR controls. There is no reason for RE5 not to be made up, from ground up, for the Wii. They acknowledge the good feedback from RE:4 and yet they ignore it in their production.
They were either to lazy to plan out a second team for that or there wasn't a budget. But saying " because of the gfx" its one hell of a lame excuuse.

And Streetfighter does nothing complex at all.

I own a Ps3 and Wii, but i rather play RE5 on the Wii due its controls. SF4 doesn't matter at all what console its on, but saying due the GFX is just pathetic. StreetFighter like second strike or third strike had the same level of gameplay(yes a slightly different system, but nothing huge that its impossible).

In the end, if they arent coming to the Wii and People want to play it, its time they get a PS3 or 360. But the reason Capcom gives are utterly pathetic.

I'm a Nintendo fanboy and Capcom latest excuses for its lack of Wii support are half assed at best, like their recent releases to the Wii.These excuses are in ever growing list of lazy development choices by 3rd party developers.

RE4 was a port of a GC title with great but tacked on Wiimote controls.A port meaning the Wii can do better if devs actually put some effort in the game, want proof, do a comparison of a Capcom port to the Wii and a built from the ground up Capcom Wii title.The differences are startling.

Lazy devs get none of my cash and Capcom is the latest to be on thin ice.

I am gamer and I own a Wii.

Why is simple. Because the games are not 5 years old yet so no they wont put them on Wii. Which is why they are failing miserably on the console. Their best selling game on Wii is a RE4 remake so of course do everything else but give fans another RE game..

If you dont want to support a console that is fine but they really need to stop this attitude that they have delivered nothing but quality to Wii when they have done anything but that.

I can't see it not fitting on a DVD; it was graphically equivocal to Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection for the PS3, It was only around 800 megs, and that was downloadable. Minus the 1080p for the Dark Resurrection, you have a direct port right there.

ANd you know why they are angry? Capcom said back then that they wanted to see how well RE would do on the Wii and then consider a more of a traditional RE game.

because they would have sold well. Maybe a SFIV championship edition for Wii and a RE5 spinoff should do if they want to make some Wii money. But it all depends if Capcom will promote those games hard on the Wii. alot of the M games on Wii suffer from a lack of proper promotion.

I have TvC, and still play it daily along with SFIV on PS3. And the Wii gamers that are hardcore have TvC and other Wii gems.

Uhm! Didn't Capcom already say this already. When Resident Evil 5 first came out they told them this already. Resident Evil 5 was made for a high end system. So was Street fighter 4. What else do they want? Do they want it tattooed on their arms? I mean haven't Wii users got it through their skulls yet. This is the price you have to pay for a cheaper system. The Wii is not a magic box. It can't just play High end games with cheaper console parts. I know no one likes to hear this but no matter what anyone does there is no way games like the Conduit could ever play, run or look as good as Halo, Gears of War, Resistance or Killzone. Even the PS2 had its limits. So sorry but the road that Nintendo took has disadvantages as well as advantages and this is one of them.

i heard RE4 sold the best on the wii. i don't know why capcom wouldn't port it over, along with SF4.
plus i heard the SF4 graphics, as good as they are, don't look good. my friends said they should have went with TvC instead of what they did, they said the game looks ugly.

luckily TvC is getting a PAL release so everything should be in english. i have the japan version, and i love it, one of the best wii games out there. after the price drops, since i'm not going to pay for the same game, with the same price, i'll buy the PAL version, so i can read it, like char bios and be able to understand the endings.

The Wii and 360/PS3 are entirely different markets. I didn't see anyone questioning why Assassin's Creed or Mirror's Edge weren't on Wii. Why should it be different with Capcom games?

I also don't see anyone wondering why De Blob and MadWorld aren't on 360/PS3.

The fact that there was a fight proves that capcom and you are wrong. Their are hardcore gamers on the Wii and what is funny a remake almost sold as much as a new release. Yes res evil 4 sold almost as much as res evil 5 on the HD consoles.

I think Wii owners would love to see another res evil simply because the controls where that much fun. I think they just want more support. Really capcom is in a hard place right now and they are getting it from both sides.

I find this all very funny and here is why.This is a RE game its like Finel Fantsy no matter what system it's on it going sell.I do think that if it had only been on the wii as a eclusive it would of sold as much as the 360 and ps3 combined.Its one of the games that apeal cross platform, so like i said no matter what system it apeared on it was going sell over a mil.You fanboys can fight all day but you know it's true if this game had come to only the wii you sony and 360 fanboys would have goten it.

Total the PS3 has gotten just over 5 games from capcom. The HD fans are not showing capcom a lot of love. Either the PC ends up being their battle ground for more fans or the Wii. The HD fans are not that crazy about capcom it seems.

I'd say bring it on capcom. if you can make a game that gamers like then we will surely buy it. If re 5 is too much then give us a back story port or some thing be creative. Either way it will be pretty fun due to just the controls and the fact that res evil Wii make 4 already exist and can possibly look as bad as dead rising shop till you drop.

I just hope monster hunter does well so capcom can make some of it's money back from those two HD games that should have sold way better.

Back in the day there was an invisible line for PC developers and console developers. I think we are starting to see why now.
