Bungie's Hiring And Here's How They'll Own You

Bungie producer Allen Murray won't say a word about how the studio's new project is going - but he will tell you how they're getting it done.

Murray first joined the team at the tail end of Halo 2's development. He described it as a "big disaster." Everyone who's ever worked in production knows that when morale is through the floor and the ship date's been pushed into the next year, it's usually the producer's fault.

"But," says Murray. "If you have a good crunch, everybody did it. It's a team effort."

This philosophy Bungie has adopted toward production post-Halo has seven main principles.

The story is too old to be commented.

Bungie is among the top 5 best developers of the decade. They are so awesome.

lord_of_balrogs3495d ago (Edited 3495d ago )

Probably not, they have a great working relationship with MS.

Edit: @Leon

Bethesda- buggy games
Insomniac - good but not top 5 good
Media Molecule - needs to prove itself with more than just one game
Valve - no disagree
Capcom - withholds content for a dlc release, see SF4 and RE5.

Media Molecule

What are you smoking?

LostCypher113495d ago

Leon allow the Devs you mentioned are all great Devs. I'd still say Bungie deserves a spot in that top 5 over Insomniac Media Molecule, i'd drop those 2 and throw up Bungie and Konami. But in all fairness i find it hard to narrow it down to just a top 5.

where's id, blizzard, bioware, bungie? All are older and have done more for their respected genre's then the the ones you listed, with the exception of capcom, who's a publisher. Valve is really the only one deserving of that list. I'd replace the rest with. I'd also add myamoto, but I don't consider nintendo a developer anymore, they seem to be more of a publisher.

id - quake, doom, wolfenstien, capture the flag.
blizzard - warcraft series, starcraft series, diablo series
bioware - neverwinter nights, kotor, baldurs gate, ME
bungie - marathon, myth (first RTT), halo, oddball/king of the hill.

LeonSKennedy4Life3495d ago

While those are all great developers...I don't consider them to be the "best".

Bungie made Marathon and then many of them left. Then, they came out with Halo. It was good...but nothing spectacular.

The only game they've done this generation is Halo 3. It was a pretty big disappointment. Yes, they've supported it well enough...but that doesn't mean it's GOOD! It sold well...but mainly because Halo introduced millions of people to the mediocre as it was.

That's the same reason people think FFVII is the best. IT'S NOT! It just got people into RPG's!

I'm partial to Bethesda. Sure, they have bugs but then again they're best known for IMMENSE open-world games. When you think about how much can go wrong in a big project like that, it's actually a little embarrassing for other devs who make more linear games suffering the same amount of bugs (Obsidian's NWN2 springs to mind).

Bungie are cool. I can't say I've loved their games all that much (being somewhat indifferent to FPS), but I admire the support and energy these guys put into their fanbase. They're often a great example of how you should treat your customers.

Xi3495d ago

well, lets take a look at quality.

those seem like respectable scores. And I'm not even going to start mentioning all the things that bungie did with marathon, it is probably the 3rd or 4th most important fps game ever made after doom and half life. Or the fact they created the real time tactics genre of games. Oni is probably their only real shame, but they didn't even get the chance to finish they game, and it still "broke new ground by blending third-person shooting with hand-to-hand combat" (wikipedia). And as much as you don't want to admit it, halo is an absolutely great game, the critics and the public would seem to agree.

other than elder scrolls and fallout, which had the ground work set, they've made absolutely nothing of quality.

It's not a dream at all, they're independent now so if they wanted to make a new game and make it multi-platform nothing's stopping them(Last I heard they had no exclusive game deal with Microsoft aside from the Halo franchise).

XDF3495d ago (Edited 3495d ago )

But Bungie will only develop its future projects for Microsoft for the foreseeable future.

Best studios of this decade:

Nintendo EAD Tokyo

LOL @ those poor kids thinking that "Insomniac" is top 5 material. That studio doesn't even qualify for top 20.

FantasyStar3495d ago

No matter what, Blizzard and Valve definitely deserve a spot in the Top 5 developers in the world. I have no idea about the other 3.

FantasyStar3495d ago

That's funny. I've read that 7 list, but I feel that Halo 3 doesn't seem to reflect that list very accurately when it comes to the integrity of Bungie. Everytime I think of Halo 3, I think of pop-tart gun and Halo 2 HD. Not that it's a bad thing, but I definitely expected more of Bungie. Maybe I expected too much from a developer that single-handed set graphical benchmarks with Halo 2 and defined what a multiplayer-based game needs and doesn't need.

The graphics whore in me cries a bit over this, but Halo Wars definitely reignited my lust for some ODST action. This time, I just won't expect mind-blowing graphics the first 2 Halos did.

IQUITN4G3495d ago

Insomniac - don't be out of your mind. It's not like their games are bad but we can all live without them. Also they have very polished products but never excell at gameplay to the point the best games do
