GDC 09: MS Shows off New Developer Tools

IGN writes: "If you thought game makers have eked every last bit of juice out of the Xbox 360, Microsoft is about to give them the tools needed to take at least one more step. A new piece of debugging hardware, called the Xbox 360 Development and Test Kit hardware is on its way to professional developers soon. This new piece of hardware has 1 GB of RAM inside of it -- more than a retail Xbox 360. This will give developers some extra room to work with while making a game that will allow them to push the limits of the Xbox 360 memory while still running debugging software that would normally eat up space on the dev kit."

Killzone...

such a negative name...

I like Victory Zone. Or Winner Zone. Adrenaline Zone.

Happy Zone.

not Killzone. so... negative.

DelbertGrady5927d ago (Edited 5927d ago )

How about Bible Zone? Or Jack Thompson Zone?

ThanatosDMC5927d ago (Edited 5927d ago )

So i guess i shouldnt write a joke about M$ making us buy 512mb ram sticks later on for $100, huh?

AAACE55927d ago

Example: When you use Windows Vista, you may have 1 Gb of ram in your system. But the system only recognizes 800 and something Mb's of Ram, because part of it is being used for other operations.

If I am understanding this right, the 360's 512 Mb's of Ram are probably only using about 300 for the actual game, with the rest being used for other operations.

This new set up could help them use everything the system has, without wasting space. Overall, it could help the games out tremendously and might make disc space slightly less of a problem for now.

Perhaps FunZone 3:Wars of Joy would be better suited to your tastes?

There's something i don't get. Microsoft will provide new dev kits with 1GB memory "to push the Xbox 360's limits". But if developers make a game developed for 1GB RAM Xbox 360, how can it fit in a 512MB Xbox 360?

There are maybe things i will never get, but if it's good for developers, i'm on it. When i see how much Mass Effect is laggy sometimes (especially in the Citadel and Noveria) or Ninja Gaiden 2 (when there are more than 10 enemies), i hope Mass Effect 2 and further games will benefit of those hardware enhancements.

PirateThom5927d ago

They'll be locked to 512 for games.

However, dev kits run debugging in the background which can hurt game performance in testing and maybe cause things to be missed. The debugging won't be on home versions.

It will allow them to see, without running on standard 360s, how their game is performing, while debugging.

GhostofHorizon5927d ago

Developers just get some breathing room, it doesn't affect the games as much as they make it sound...

tudors5927d ago

the extra ram is to allow the developers to access to more tools and debuging facilities, and other extras such as animation tools for avatars, but it while it might inovate I don't think people should confuse it with a new engine, but if the debugging is better, perfect example DLC Fallout the pitt then maybe better performance equals better looking? but Cry-engine 3 is where you should be looking for a Killzone killer.

The Evil Within Deserved More: A Great Horror Series Left Behind

The Outerhaven writes: While I hold Bethesda's The Evil Within series as some of the best Survival Horror games available, it's clear that Bethesda has no intention of revisiting the series. While Capcom is still working on its Resident Evil series, I look back at the now-dead survival horror series from Bethesda, wondering why the series was left wide open, and yet still not revisited.

An OK horror series left behind. It had some great ideas, but it never knew how to play to its strengths. Instead, it came out like just another RE4 clone.

I would love for a third entry to come out, but it needs to learn to lean in on the psychological aspect and move away from the generic "pew pew" ideology at the center of the gameplay loop. It doesn't need to abandon it; it just needs to put it into better context, is all.

Also, try a first-person perspective instead. Too many 3rd-person games with nothing to offer but an avatar taking precious screen space. At least make it an actual option and not that janky-ass mess the second game pretended to have.

Love both games, hope that we will get third game

PS5/Pro/Switch 2 version of RDR2 seems most likely. I’d love a RDR3 but that seems years away

Cacabunga12h ago

Id be happy for just a 60fps patch

OmegaSoldati11h ago(Edited 11h ago)

Agreed, but at the same time RD2 came out in 2018. Could it be a remake of Red Dead 1?

Spoiler:

Marston died in the end of Red Dead and Red Dead 2 is set before that. Im curious now. What news could it be?

mkis0074h ago

I'm pretty sure the next game will be another prequel as the story really has no where to go as far as being a western after red dead redemption. The next game will end with the ferry boat incident.

Profchaos13h ago(Edited 13h ago)

Their contracts are iron clas if they leak anything legit they are threatened with immense legal action.

My hopes for what this is are minimal its probably a meet and greet with the cast

I dont see why they would be involved in a upgraded version of rdr2 when the dialogue hasn't changed

thorstein10h ago

He seems to have been cleared to do this as he purposely picked up the game, streamed it, and made the announcement.

XBLA Classic 'A World of Keflings' Is Coming to Steam, and There's a Demo

"Back in the innocent days of 2010, A World of Keflings was a fairly popular successor to A Kingdom for Keflings. I even wrote about it a few times in 2012! But the world of humans moved on, and NinjaBee's city-building/adventure game was last seen on the ill-fated Wii U in 2014. Fast-forward to the dark year of 2025, and not only is A World of Keflings coming to Steam, but there's already a playable demo! Perhaps the cheerful, no pressure gameplay that the Keflings bring is just what we need nowadays," says Co-Optimus.
