"Games like R-Type are valuable, if only for teaching this lesson: games used to be really freakin’ hard. R-Type I and II are relentlessly difficult. A billion things that can kill you on the screen at any one time, and one touch is instant death. I am really grateful games have moved on from this. It’s telling that both games have a mode that gives you infinite lives, and part of your scoring is how many lives you use up. So this is a game for a particular type of player; one who doesn’t mind old school games really giving them a work out. Everyone else, stay away."
