Extended Killzone 2 Multiplayer Review – Over Already?

The only way to begin this extended review of the multiplayer component of Killzone 2 is by stating that is it incredible! Simply put, this editor from GamingFront.net has never played anything like it.

Sure you can make comparisons to other first person shooters on the market but there is nothing that comes close to what Killzone 2 has in store for you.

The question is, does Killzone 2 (multiplayer) have enough to keep gamers returning for more?

I have to agree with gamingfront on this. The multiplayer portion of Killzone, while awesome does lack longevity. They do need to introduce additional ranks.

There is something addicting about reaching that next level!

gw4k5954d ago

Maybe something like they do for World of Warcraft. Downloadable content that increases ranks and etc.

motogamer5954d ago

MORE RANKS! I maxed out my first night playing. Now what? Ribbons are ok...but i want a higher rank!

motogamer5954d ago

I think the guns are perfectly balanced. I see on the forums that there is a lot b*tching over the shotgun. It is awesome!

joydestroy5953d ago

omfg the shotgun is amazing!

i flanked some guys and came around the corner and killed all of 'em without them even knowing what was going on.

Viper75953d ago

Weapons are pretty balanced if you dont count the Rocket launcher which is basicaly "shoot in direction of enemy for multikill and grab the nearest weapon and continue" kind of weapon and very annoying.

good thing its not as massively abused as in beta phew..

as for the ranks, yeah there should be some new ones, maybe a brestige type of thing where you could do it over and over again while not loosing or gaining really anything except shinier badge to show off for your friends :P

thehitman5953d ago

No matter what shooter you play almost everyone complains over the shotgun.

tlogank5953d ago

I love the multiplayer, but I often feel like it gets too chaotic. There will be rooms where 20 people are in there just firing away, it sounds crazy on surround sound cause there are bullets going every which way. My fear (and something that is beginning to already happen) is everyone ranking to where they can create turrets, and then just seeing them around every corner. That is when I feel like it won't be so fun.

joydestroy5953d ago

the chaos is part of what makes me love it so much!
i wasn't enjoying it as much as i do now until the chaos part happened. and then it wouldn't stop. and i couldn't stop laughing! that's the fun part to me...all the killing, gun fire and grenades all over the place...just hilarious!

on surround sound.......i can't even begin to describe that haha

boodybandit5953d ago (Edited 5953d ago )

The more you play the more abilities you unlock and the more you use the those abilities effectively? The more abilities you get. Every special ability has a secondary ability. There is also a medal system in place that increases your points, rewards and other items.

Do a search and check out just how deep this upgrade system really is. This game is amazing.

Besides what happened to playing games online because they were just fun to play? I was ranked out on BFBC a week or 2 after the game came out but I still played it for several months. I stopped playing that game when KZ2 was released.

40cal5953d ago

I would love to see more ranks/classes in the future, along with some new maps. The multiplayer is so damn good they could keep it going for a very long time.

Flipgeneral5953d ago

But does anyone else feel the multi needs some fine tuning?
Example, a tactician that can set up spawn points on Def points. When both HG and ISA tacticians set their spawns to be on objective points it just degenerates into a cluster f**k!!!
Not to mention a class that receives x2 hp + x2 speed boost, now that makes no sense...sorry!
And don't get me started on auto-aim shotgun...

boodybandit5953d ago (Edited 5953d ago )

I don't see the shotgun having auto aim but than again I only used it twice. I am more of an SMG or light machine guy.

Last night I noticed a guy running around at 2x the speed and I was a little set back by it. Oh well though you know? I guess GG thought it was a cool upgrade. Some will love it and others will hate it. It's no different than any other game that has upgrades/perks. How many people complained about juggernaut and the 3 grenade perk in COD4? Exactly.

As gamers we either choose to learn to counter these upgrades or we move on to another shooter that is more to our personal preference. I honestly think the only game that rivals KZ2 online is COD4 although I feel KZ2 is a lot more intense. I'm not saying I like it better than COD4 (yet). It's still to new to me to say that since I played COD4 for over 6 months straight online. So far though it's the most intense online shooter for me since Battlefield. You actually feel like you are in a war.

ordellsway5954d ago

where gamingfront.net is coming from. They made some good points. I too feel a bit deflated now that I can no longer reach a next rank.

Looks like COD again until this give us something to play for. Good work on this review. I haven't seen anyone make this point yet!

ezcex5953d ago

umm you play for fun, not for rank to show off.

W1ldWolf5953d ago

lol, play for fun and to win. play wow if you want to level up. and as far as going back to COD, peace see ya goodbye

Raoh5953d ago

i can see where he is coming from but i see longevity in having good teammates and opponents..

i find myself wanting to log off cause its getting late and i have to get to bed to go to work in the morning but when you have a great group of people working together there is no stopping.

the game is still new and many have not ranked up yet and unlocked badges. hard to discuss longevity until you see a balance of badges on your teams giving to more strategy and gameplay ahead.

it hasnt been a full week yet and you can really say there is no longevity when everyone is still in the infancy stage of the multiplayer still trying to sink their teeth into the core of the game.

motogamer5953d ago

part to any game. But I do understand the point that is being made here. For me I play the game because I enjoy it. I love it actually....but I need to feel like I am accomplishing something and that is what we receive from playing games.

Maybe it is just me but i have to agree with the editor on this one. While the game is fun there still needs to be that 'thing' to play for.

I can't wait for some new maps by the way.

yoghurt5953d ago (Edited 5953d ago )

Do people really just play for ranks? do people not play multiplayer because its fun?

I mean sure, I love ranking up, getting ribbons what not, but once that's done surely its still fun to play?? People who are at max rank etc must play alot, I guess I dont play as much as alot of people so I dont progress as quick - oh and I'm probably rubbish at it!

I wander when they'll be bringing new maps out, i think that adds alot of value, playing new areas

ordellsway5953d ago

and who doesn't? Games of all styles incorporate this for a reason. COD 4 and 5, RPG's and even Killzone 2. There is something special about reaching that next level.

Bubble Buddy5953d ago

IMO I love being the max level :P. I'm already general and trying to unlock all abilities right now. 5 kills with turrets or air support is hard >.>. All I want form this game is a PARTY SYSTEM PLEASE GG :(

Mcrmarcher5953d ago

They will probably release more ranks and weapons via DLC, hopefully its free but i'm getting it either way.

Why Guerrilla Games Shouldn't Abandon the Killzone Series

Hugely disappointingly, it seems that Guerrilla Games, developers of the Killzone and Horizon series, may be done with Killzone for good.

1 was fine, overhyped as a " halo" killer
2 was a graphical beast at the time, and felt heavy
3 was good a refinement of 2 but not much else. weird audio issues environment were to quiet
shadow fall was pretty but bland

OtterX241d ago (Edited 241d ago )

Shadowfall had great Multiplayer though. Too bad the campaign was meh at best. It did have the occasional great moment sprinkled in.

TheNamelessOne241d ago (Edited 241d ago )

I played through 2/3 multiple times. I played through the original once, but it felt pretty lukewarm for me. I couldn't be bothered to beat Shadow Fall. I got a couple hours in and just went "I'm done". Never touched it again. It was awesome on the tech side, being a launch title, but it didn't even match up to the first game when it came to actually having fun playing it.

Rude-ro241d ago

3 in 3d was an amazing experience to be had.
Although not many experienced it as intended for good reasons.

just_looken241d ago

You forgot the ai advancements on the playstation 2 killzone one you could have a full team of bots doing everything even playing the objective that was a big thing.

In killzone 2 they always flanked you and when available used the high ground.

Playing killzone 2 no hud 5.1 audio was/is awesome

MDTunkown241d ago

They should finish Horizon story first

darthv72241d ago

I dont mind if someone else takes up the mantle for the KZ franchise. We are several years removed from the first game. It certainly could use a remake to gauge interest in the rest of the series. I know it has its fans... Im thinking of how a proper reboot can rekindle that old dormant flame and bring in a new generation of fans in the process.

just_looken241d ago

You forgot killzone mercenaries on the ps vita but it was the worst selling sony game for awhile there.

Yui_Suzumiya241d ago

Yeah, a remake would be pretty awesome

anast241d ago

They should let it go or sell it. No use spending millions on this project.

LucasRuinedChildhood241d ago

Would like a new IP before Horizon 3. Just because games take so long to make these days.

PlayStation 3 Games That Desperately Need a PS5 Remaster

The PlayStation 3 may not have been the strongest generation for Sony, but there were still some diamonds in the rough that deserve a revisit as PS5 remasters.

Even if they could just remaster and put on PSVR2, some would still look great as VR titles and could do a whole lot to bolster the headset w these exclusives! I'd imagine the investment of reworking these titles into VR would be way less than building new games from the ground up, and they could be amazing experiences, and VR often makes flat games feel fresh again. The Resistance and Killzone games are particularly what I want to see!!

Rude-ro470d ago

I played killzone 3 in 3d and it really changed the game per being immersive.
In vr, that would be even more awesome.

darthv72470d ago

Funny you mention that... my son wanted to play some PS3 games in 3d on my PS tv and he was blown away by how good KZ3 was. It really was a great addition to the game. Im surprised there have not been more 3d games from that era being ported to the PSVR/VR2.

_SilverHawk_470d ago

resistance 1-3, killzone 1-3, uncharted 1-3, uncharted golden abyss, folklore, socom 4 , motorstorm, twisted metal, MAG, heavenly sword

Cacabunga470d ago

Killzone 2+3
Sly Thieves in Time
Crack in Time
God of War Ascension
Motorstorm
Modnation racer
Infamous 1+2

Profchaos470d ago (Edited 470d ago )

Killzone trilogy in VR would be amazing bonus points if they offer shadow fall.

There was a psvr1 Killzone project that supermassive was working on at one stage which wasn't up to scratch and Sony brand it back in house I was hoping we would see that on psvr2 eventually.

Personally I'd love to see some more love or acknowledgement of psvr2 from Sony in general it was a expensive headset and Sony barely acknowledge it's existence

seanpitt23470d ago

The amount of work needed to remaster these games wouldn't be beneficial on a financial and business sense.. MGS4 would probably be the best bet as it would need the least amount of work!

Iceball2000470d ago

YEAAASSSSS! I miss this franchise and wanna play it so bad again.

Father__Merrin470d ago

The time is perfect for a resistance fall of man game campaign coop multiplayer

InUrFoxHole470d ago

The resistance series is str8 trash to me. Socom 3 I would welcome. Or killzone MP.

Marcus Fenix470d ago

A Resistance reboot will be awesome

Michiel1989470d ago

That's what Bungie should make, Ill keep saying it until it happens

1Victor470d ago (Edited 470d ago )

Resistance was ok but Warhawk and Starhawk was better and kept me coming back for almost a decade of fun and petty revenge on the loud mouth unskilled players 🤣
Edit I loved capture the flag dropping the pot on the flag carrier was extremely satisfying as well as transforming your plane in bot form and stumping them to death 😱

470d ago
Michiel1989470d ago

Resistance was the best co-op fps I ever played after L4D2

Up there with the top tier in the industry. Love Guerrilla Games - Horizon Burning Shores is simply STUNNING.

1Victor775d ago

Can’t wait for their next franchise

SullysCigar775d ago

Same. They nailed it with Horizon. The trouble is I also want a new Killzone! Can't I just have it all?!

jznrpg774d ago

I’m with you I want Horizon 3 , Killzone and new IPs

badz149774d ago

I have yet to play Burning Shores as I just started Forbidden West (bought at launch, just unwrapped last weekend LOL) and playing on PS5.

man...I still can't believe the graphics especially now I'm playing it on my LG OLED. that graphics and with stable performance backing it up, GG really is the master of their craft!

Vengeance1138774d ago

32.7M sales in the Horizon franchise! With 8.4M coming from Forbidden West alone! Truly a hugely successful game and franchise as a whole. Looking forward to Horizon III

Shane Kim774d ago

That's kind of a huge drop though. It's only been two games.

VersusDMC774d ago

One year after realease HZD sold 7.6 million.

https://www.noobfeed.com/ne...

So not a drop off.

Unless you're saying a HFW should have sold as much now as HZD sold in 5 years?

Vengeance1138774d ago

It's been 3 games, this includes Call of the Mountain. Also no, its a great improvement over HZD.

solideagle774d ago

lol you are comparing:

HZD: 28 February 2017 - May 2023 (6 years+)

HFW: 18 February 2022 - May 2023 (1 year+)

We will see if it surpass original number.

Phoenix76774d ago

@shane, 2 full main games, 2 DLC add ons, 1 VR spin off game, oh and a an official LEGO set.
Not too bad for an ip that's only been on market for 6 years

REDGUM774d ago

Wow, very impressive. I didn't know the numbers were so high for Forbidden West. Still playing through it myself

thesoftware730774d ago (Edited 774d ago )

Yooo, when I first saw that Killzone 1 footage at E3, my friends my brothers and I were like, Holy shit! When it came out, it didn't look exactly like it, but we sunk so many hours into 1 & 2.

I even liked Killzone: SF, it was a spectacle to look at, and even today it looks good. I hope they make a new one. Can you imagine how that will look, and they can get some modern FPS pointers from Bungie.

blacktiger774d ago

thank you fps lover, I'm with you

talocaca774d ago

Such a wonderful studio. They deserve all their success.

The Decima Engine is absolute 🔥 I'm just mad they have abandoned Killzone.

OzzY-waZZy774d ago (Edited 774d ago )

Kinda wish they move on from Horizon tbh.

lukasmain774d ago

They are probably working on mutiple projects. One of them is Horizon 3, but another is a multiplaer game and probably somehting else.

Imalwaysright774d ago

There were rumours that they were working on a Socom reboot.
