Can the PS3 do any better than Killzone 2 in terms of visuals?

Gamer.Blorge:

"Killzone 2 is now out there on the streets, although I'm not playing it for the reasons outlined previously. It is regarded, by many, as the best-looking game ever to have been released, be it on PS3, any other console, or even the PC. But is this is, the best the PS3 can do? Or is there more to come in the years ahead?

I may have decided to avoid Killzone 2 for a month or so, but that doesn't mean I'm not impressed with the game, at least visually. Mike has previously stated that it's the best looking game of this generation, even surpassing the PC eye popper that is Crysis. And on the evidence I've so far seen, he's not far wrong."

Wait you until you see Uncharted 2 this year and lets not even mention GOW III oops I did already

MasFlowKiller5953d ago

Its hard to believe right?

but ps3 games are only going to get better.

remember Uncharted 1 was a first generation game and its still one of the best looking game this Gen.

XGRaViSmOrSX5953d ago

exactly were only gonna see it get better on first party.

Uncharted 2 and GOW3 are going to push the bar higher IMO

GWAVE5953d ago

In some ways, upcoming games that we have already seen such as Uncharted 2, Heavy Rain, and God of War III surpassed the graphics in KZ2 (in SOME ways, mind you). And let's not forget that inevitable Team Ico game still being developed...

Awookie5953d ago

Uncharted is my absolute favorite game this gen animation, story, atmosphere are top notch I cant wait to play the next one.

andyo135953d ago

has graphics better than gears of war 2, i saw the comparison and uncharted blows gears out of the water in the screens. but in motion it blows it out of the universe with its dynamic weather system and clothes that get wet realistically. Infact the movement of the trees are more realistic than in crysis, difference is you can't cut down trees in uncharted but still the trees move very realistically

MNicholas5953d ago

because Killzone 2 is already doing so much more than any other game in just about every technical category, it's hard to see a massive improvement.

However, I can see a game with a lesser scope, which does not need to simulate all out warfare on such a massive scale, cutting back on some of the outright extravagent things that Killzone 2 does just to show off how much better it's engine is (like glowing embers from explosions bouncing realistically around the environment while casting light on objects) and emphasizing other areas that may result in an overall visibly better looking game.

PimpHandHappy5953d ago

I may have decided to avoid Killzone 2 for a month or so, but that doesn't mean I'm not impressed with the game, at least visually!

really?

ok let me just say like most storys posted on n4g i didnt read this! Mainly because i dont read many sites outside 2 or 3...and even then i dont really read them. I like podcasts

so your going to jump online with ppl that have learned all the maps and have ranked up for a month already?

ANYWAY
can the PS3 do any better? What a STUPID QUESTION

Killzone will be top 10 for PS3 exclusives even after 5 more years...right now its maybe #1 even thou i think MGS4 really looked awesome! I also think Uncharted looks and is looking awesome...

it might be the best looking FPS on PS3 for a couple years BUT SOMEONE will top it

Freak of Nature5953d ago (Edited 5953d ago )

Yes that is totally correct.I agree!

Plus I think that overall "style" may figure in on something "looking better",plus peoples taste on different genres,etc,etc...

In the end games like Killzone 2,the next Team Ico game, uncharted 2,GOW3,may all be true "bar raisers"but in different categories...And more stylistic games like whatever Media molecule comes out with next, or the next ratchet and Clank game can be genre re-defining" games eye candy wise within a more toonish/pixar direction.......

Bloodwar5953d ago

this will remain a 3 console generation. The 360, PS3 and Wii all have something that separates it from the others. Even if Wii only gets the casual market and has double the userbase than the PS3 and 360 combined, the PS3 and 360 will continue to flourish because of the core gamers like myself and many of us here on N4G. Kudos to all of you. =)

May all of the consoles win this generation. And PC. =)

Le Idiotce5953d ago

when the game has already been played for 3 days or so and around 99% of the people who played it, rate it higher than Crysis.

ilemon is furthermore completely wrong on how KZ2 is only confined to small rooms and corridors. His ridiculous claims has blown his cover and that he has not played the game at all and that he doesnt know what he is talking about and that he is a 360 fanboy bashing the game.

Because had he played KZ2, he would have known that the single player is hardly confined to a room and does not consist of merely shanty town. In fact, he is owned.

You can cut down the trees in the level where you're on the .50 on the back of the jeep... that part was so fun.

kparks5953d ago

This is how i feel about the game ill get alot of disagree for this.. but it didn't amaze me sorry... WOW it has good graphics and it also has a controller lag that i noticed and awkward X Y AXIS sensitivity!!!

"Mainly because i dont read many sites outside 2 or 3"

Why don't you just stay at those 2-3 sites instead going to N4G then? O.o

rogimusprime5953d ago

anytime soon. I own both systems, am far from a fanboy. I put the game in for the first time this morning. and it made my head hurt it was so hi def. I had to put it down. Gears looks good. Crysis looks DAMN good, but you have to put a ridiculous amount of money into a PC graphix card to get it running smooth, but for $400....KZ2 is flawless.

For everyone who said the E3 2005 trailer wouldn't match the game....its okay to take your foot out of your mouth.

Obama5953d ago

Crysis looks great but in motion I think killzone 2 wins.

iLemon5953d ago

You could run Crysis on a 200 dollar card if the Feild of View was as small as Killzone 2. It is like your soldier has no peripheral vision and only one eye. Eveything else is great but the FOV is annoyingly small.

XLiveGamer5953d ago (Edited 5953d ago )

I have a few questions for you:

What the hell?

Are you drunk?

Killzone 2 better than Crysis?

Do you even own a good PC with a 8800GTX?

Can you please find somebody with a 200 Series nVidia GeForce Card and pay attention?

Hey Crysis its not the new kid on the block here its Killzone 2 but the old joe its still kicking his ass ! lol

Traveler5953d ago

Killzone 2 looks better than Crysis in some ways and Crysis looks better in others.

pwnsause5953d ago

Theres something that Killzone 2 does that Crysis doesn't do. Animations. Can a enemy get killed in a dramatic fashion when he gets shot in Crysis? don't think so.

MNicholas5953d ago (Edited 5953d ago )

does a lot of things well, even a few things better than Killzone 2. However, Killzone 2 simply has a hell of a lot more going on on-screen. For example the Cell processor can simply handle vastly more dynamic objects than any desktop CPU. The deferred rendering engine also enables things like hundreds of real-time dynamic lights. Polygon counts are also superior to Crysis (in fact many console games push more polygons than Crysis!). The hit response on dynamic, AI driven, moving objects using animation blending is quite a bit more impressive than anything in Crysis (or, for that matter, any other game). The list could go on.

iLemon5953d ago

has alot going on screen. but the majority of the maps seem to consist of small rooms, corridors, and stairs. I have never seen such restrictive map design in an fps. at any given time you can't see 85% of the map in multiplayer. I think this is how they maintain frames.

XLiveGamer5953d ago (Edited 5953d ago )

@ iLemon 2.7
You understand this sh!+

@ MNicholas 2.6 "For example the Cell processor can simply handle vastly more dynamic objects than any desktop CPU"
¿You are not including the Intel i7 CPU on that right?

Traveler5953d ago (Edited 5953d ago )

Not true. There are some absolutely huge vistas and open areas in Killzone 2 and the game still runs beautifully.

Your comments reveal that you guys haven't even played the game.

Le Idiotce5953d ago

ilemon and xlibvegamer are obvious 360 fanboys in defensive mode trying to convince us how KZ2 does not look better than Crysis
when the game has already been played for 3 days or so and around 99% of the people who played it, rate it higher than Crysis. Yes, KZ2 looks better than Crysis. In your face.

ilemon is furthermore completely wrong on how KZ2 is only confined to small rooms and corridors. His ridiculous claims has blown his cover and that he has not played the game at all and that he doesnt know what he is talking about and that he is a 360 fanboy bashing the game.

iLemon5953d ago

I haven't played any single player. I never play any FPS single player. And up until last night EVERY f$*@king game I played was one of three small maps. I guess it was just some weird coincidence. Since then I have played some beautiful outdoor maps that are very impressive. I really like the one that is like a mars volcano.

MNicholas5952d ago (Edited 5952d ago )

is just a hyper-threaded 4 core CPU. The slowest version costs as much as a Wii and the top of the line model costs almost as much as three PS3s!

PC and Console CPU floating point performance specs (source: Beyond3d):

Xbox XCPU 733mhz: 1.5 GFLOPS
PS2 Emotion Engine 300mhz: 6 GFLOPS
Intel Pentium 4 3.2GHz: 6 GFLOPs
Intel Pentium 4 3.4GHz: 7 GFLOPs
Intel Pentium 4 670: 7 GFLOPs
Intel Pentium D 840: 13 GFLOPs
Intel Pentium D 955: 14 GFLOPs
Intel Pentium D 965: 15 GLOPs
Intel Core 2 X6800: 23 GFLOPs
Intel Core 2 Quad QX6700: 43 GFLOPs
Intel Core 2 Quad QX6850: 48 GFLOPs
Intel Core 2 Quad QX9770: 51 GFLOPs
Intel Core i7-965 3.2Ghz: 51 GFLOPs
Xbox360 Xenon 3.2Ghz: 77 GFLOPs
PS3 Cell 3.2Ghz: 179 GFLOPs

Nvidia's website backs up those numbers as well. Let's throw the i7 a bone and do the old hyper-threading spec bonus of 1.5x. That leaves it at just over 75gflops.

In optimized applications (like video games), the Cell outperforms these other processors by an even larger margin because it's unique architecture allows considerable fine tuning. Feel free to visit IBM's website to learn more.

iLemon5951d ago

All those gflops are great but ps and xbox are limited by old video technology. It doesn't matter how many gflops you have on paper if after many years you can only squeeze out killzone @720p and only 30fps.

Why Guerrilla Games Shouldn't Abandon the Killzone Series

Hugely disappointingly, it seems that Guerrilla Games, developers of the Killzone and Horizon series, may be done with Killzone for good.

1 was fine, overhyped as a " halo" killer
2 was a graphical beast at the time, and felt heavy
3 was good a refinement of 2 but not much else. weird audio issues environment were to quiet
shadow fall was pretty but bland

OtterX238d ago (Edited 238d ago )

Shadowfall had great Multiplayer though. Too bad the campaign was meh at best. It did have the occasional great moment sprinkled in.

TheNamelessOne237d ago (Edited 237d ago )

I played through 2/3 multiple times. I played through the original once, but it felt pretty lukewarm for me. I couldn't be bothered to beat Shadow Fall. I got a couple hours in and just went "I'm done". Never touched it again. It was awesome on the tech side, being a launch title, but it didn't even match up to the first game when it came to actually having fun playing it.

Rude-ro237d ago

3 in 3d was an amazing experience to be had.
Although not many experienced it as intended for good reasons.

just_looken237d ago

You forgot the ai advancements on the playstation 2 killzone one you could have a full team of bots doing everything even playing the objective that was a big thing.

In killzone 2 they always flanked you and when available used the high ground.

Playing killzone 2 no hud 5.1 audio was/is awesome

MDTunkown238d ago

They should finish Horizon story first

darthv72238d ago

I dont mind if someone else takes up the mantle for the KZ franchise. We are several years removed from the first game. It certainly could use a remake to gauge interest in the rest of the series. I know it has its fans... Im thinking of how a proper reboot can rekindle that old dormant flame and bring in a new generation of fans in the process.

just_looken237d ago

You forgot killzone mercenaries on the ps vita but it was the worst selling sony game for awhile there.

Yui_Suzumiya237d ago

Yeah, a remake would be pretty awesome

anast237d ago

They should let it go or sell it. No use spending millions on this project.

LucasRuinedChildhood237d ago

Would like a new IP before Horizon 3. Just because games take so long to make these days.

PlayStation 3 Games That Desperately Need a PS5 Remaster

The PlayStation 3 may not have been the strongest generation for Sony, but there were still some diamonds in the rough that deserve a revisit as PS5 remasters.

Even if they could just remaster and put on PSVR2, some would still look great as VR titles and could do a whole lot to bolster the headset w these exclusives! I'd imagine the investment of reworking these titles into VR would be way less than building new games from the ground up, and they could be amazing experiences, and VR often makes flat games feel fresh again. The Resistance and Killzone games are particularly what I want to see!!

Rude-ro466d ago

I played killzone 3 in 3d and it really changed the game per being immersive.
In vr, that would be even more awesome.

darthv72466d ago

Funny you mention that... my son wanted to play some PS3 games in 3d on my PS tv and he was blown away by how good KZ3 was. It really was a great addition to the game. Im surprised there have not been more 3d games from that era being ported to the PSVR/VR2.

_SilverHawk_466d ago

resistance 1-3, killzone 1-3, uncharted 1-3, uncharted golden abyss, folklore, socom 4 , motorstorm, twisted metal, MAG, heavenly sword

Cacabunga466d ago

Killzone 2+3
Sly Thieves in Time
Crack in Time
God of War Ascension
Motorstorm
Modnation racer
Infamous 1+2

Profchaos466d ago (Edited 466d ago )

Killzone trilogy in VR would be amazing bonus points if they offer shadow fall.

There was a psvr1 Killzone project that supermassive was working on at one stage which wasn't up to scratch and Sony brand it back in house I was hoping we would see that on psvr2 eventually.

Personally I'd love to see some more love or acknowledgement of psvr2 from Sony in general it was a expensive headset and Sony barely acknowledge it's existence

seanpitt23466d ago

The amount of work needed to remaster these games wouldn't be beneficial on a financial and business sense.. MGS4 would probably be the best bet as it would need the least amount of work!

Iceball2000467d ago

YEAAASSSSS! I miss this franchise and wanna play it so bad again.

Father__Merrin467d ago

The time is perfect for a resistance fall of man game campaign coop multiplayer

InUrFoxHole467d ago

The resistance series is str8 trash to me. Socom 3 I would welcome. Or killzone MP.

Marcus Fenix467d ago

A Resistance reboot will be awesome

Michiel1989466d ago

That's what Bungie should make, Ill keep saying it until it happens

1Victor467d ago (Edited 467d ago )

Resistance was ok but Warhawk and Starhawk was better and kept me coming back for almost a decade of fun and petty revenge on the loud mouth unskilled players 🤣
Edit I loved capture the flag dropping the pot on the flag carrier was extremely satisfying as well as transforming your plane in bot form and stumping them to death 😱

467d ago
Michiel1989466d ago

Resistance was the best co-op fps I ever played after L4D2

Up there with the top tier in the industry. Love Guerrilla Games - Horizon Burning Shores is simply STUNNING.

1Victor771d ago

Can’t wait for their next franchise

SullysCigar771d ago

Same. They nailed it with Horizon. The trouble is I also want a new Killzone! Can't I just have it all?!

jznrpg770d ago

I’m with you I want Horizon 3 , Killzone and new IPs

badz149770d ago

I have yet to play Burning Shores as I just started Forbidden West (bought at launch, just unwrapped last weekend LOL) and playing on PS5.

man...I still can't believe the graphics especially now I'm playing it on my LG OLED. that graphics and with stable performance backing it up, GG really is the master of their craft!

Vengeance1138771d ago

32.7M sales in the Horizon franchise! With 8.4M coming from Forbidden West alone! Truly a hugely successful game and franchise as a whole. Looking forward to Horizon III

Shane Kim771d ago

That's kind of a huge drop though. It's only been two games.

VersusDMC771d ago

One year after realease HZD sold 7.6 million.

https://www.noobfeed.com/ne...

So not a drop off.

Unless you're saying a HFW should have sold as much now as HZD sold in 5 years?

Vengeance1138771d ago

It's been 3 games, this includes Call of the Mountain. Also no, its a great improvement over HZD.

solideagle771d ago

lol you are comparing:

HZD: 28 February 2017 - May 2023 (6 years+)

HFW: 18 February 2022 - May 2023 (1 year+)

We will see if it surpass original number.

Phoenix76771d ago

@shane, 2 full main games, 2 DLC add ons, 1 VR spin off game, oh and a an official LEGO set.

Wow, very impressive. I didn't know the numbers were so high for Forbidden West. Still playing through it myself

Yooo, when I first saw that Killzone 1 footage at E3, my friends my brothers and I were like, Holy shit! When it came out, it didn't look exactly like it, but we sunk so many hours into 1 & 2.

I even liked Killzone: SF, it was a spectacle to look at, and even today it looks good. I hope they make a new one. Can you imagine how that will look, and they can get some modern FPS pointers from Bungie.

blacktiger770d ago

thank you fps lover, I'm with you

talocaca771d ago

Such a wonderful studio. They deserve all their success.

The Decima Engine is absolute 🔥 I'm just mad they have abandoned Killzone.

OzzY-waZZy771d ago (Edited 771d ago )

Kinda wish they move on from Horizon tbh.

lukasmain770d ago

They are probably working on mutiple projects. One of them is Horizon 3, but another is a multiplaer game and probably somehting else.

Imalwaysright770d ago

There were rumours that they were working on a Socom reboot.
