Sony has been king of the video-game hill for the past decade, but its position is beginning to look precarious.

Rivals Microsoft and Nintendo are on the attack, and they seem to have a better footing than in the past to truly challenge Sony's dominance.

By the time Sony's PlayStation 3 console shows up on store shelves this November, Microsoft's own next-generation console, the Xbox 360, could have a lead of more than a year and 10 million units in the marketplace.

yeah and we know stores love to keep massive PYRAMIDS of product that costed them money to buy to sell in their store that isn't selling. I saw a pile of over 50 360's disappear at a Fry's here in Southern California in about a week. Everytime I was there I would stop by the 360 area and talk to people who were buying one and tell them what good games were, what they could rent, what is coming up.

Xbox 360 is vastly superior to the PS2. They aren't fighting the PS2 you idiot. They are fighting the fact people are buying it because it is $130 for a PS2 with a library ov over 2000 games, and the 360 only has about 80 and is twice the price. That family might not have a HDTV the kids can play, or the might not need the 360 at this time or can afford it.

Really I can tell how old you are, or at least that your mental level of comprehension is pretty low. If you think PS3 is going to sell 5 million a month for the first year you are a bigger idiot than I already know you are. Price has everything to do with the public buying into new technologies, and in gaming ... games have alot to do with it.

One things for sure, they (Sony) are gonna have to step it up a bit, and maybe surprise us with new things, maybe like a price drop at launch, ora free Blu-Ray movie, or anything that they have to do to get people to start respecting them again. I know, they can tell the truth about something for once. Im buying one regardless of what ppl say or hear, Im just all in it for the games, and Xbox 360 and PS3 both have some exclusive games that rock and are only on one console. (ie. The transition to HD-DVD requires minimal infrastructure investment, whereas the transition to Blu-ray requires massive infrastructure investment. As it stands now, you can practically buy a stand-alone HD-DVD player and upwards of 10 to 20 HD-DVD’s for the price of a stand-alone Blu-ray player. Thus, even though Sony is including a Blu-ray drive in the PS3, the format war is far from won. This is especially true when you consider that HD-DVD is the only format that can contain both a DVD-9 movie and a high definition HD-DVD movie on one disk. So to the extent that DVD-9’s still hold ground, HD-DVD will be the sole beneficiary and then when these people go to upgrade their players, they will already have a large library of HD-DVD movies. Furthermore, with up-conversion becoming more and more popular and the differences between DVD-9 and HD-DVD / Blu-ray becoming less obvious, the higher price of Blu-ray over HD-DVD will be even more pronounced.

I personally believe that the winner of the next-gen format war will therefore be DVD-9’s and players that read both HD-DVD and Blu-ray disks. Obviously, Microsoft is in a far better position than Sony is to adapt an external HD-Drive for the 360, based on the realities of the changing marketplace. However, the biggest advantage that the 360 will have over the PS3 is that it doesn’t have any HD-Drive as standard. You see contrary to what Sony wants you to believe; a Blu-ray drive will offer very minimal benefits for games and their decision to include it in the PS3 amounts to really nothing more than a cross-subsidization / format war leveraging stance. Meanwhile, Sony has given the most prolific software company in the world a one year head start with a system that for all intensive purposes is just as (if not more powerful) than the PS3. Including Blu-ray has also handed Microsoft (which is in far better financial shape than Sony) the price mechanism to adjust the price of the 360 – so as to essentially assure Microsoft victory in the next-generation. This is of course very serious for PS3 owners because the games tend to gravitate where the install base is and the 360’s superior development environment will further exasperate the PS3’s shortcomings.

Still if you are a Sony fan then you are happy because regardless of how poorly the PS3 does against the 360, Sony stands to establish a foothold for Blu-ray in the upcoming format war and in the bigger picture that is good because Sony stands on making large amounts of profits from the resulting Blu-ray royalties. However, if you are a Playstation fan then you are probably not happy because it should be obvious that Sony’s priority was not about making the best GAMES machine at the most affordable price possible. As for me, well as a techie and an economist I will love to see Sony be dethroned this generation because it will mean they didn’t get away with abusing their consumer loyalty base and it will mean that Microsoft will be rewarded for better internalizing consumer's interests in the gaming market.

I think it's a fact that Sony Computer Entertainment software has far outsold Halo, because Halo was the one and only title to come out there. So, do we have a title? I don't know.

I guess I'd have to look at the numbers on Grand Turismo vs. the numbers on Halo. But I can guarantee you that Sony Computer Entertainment's first-party software far and away outsold Microsoft's first-party software.

While it's true that GT3 sold as many as Halo and Halo 2 together, you've got to understand that the PS2 system has around 4 to 5 times the total units the Xbox has in circulation. If you divide the number of the games sold by the number of people who own the hardware, the Halo series is at least twice as successful (as far as attachment rate is concerned.) If Xbox had as many units out as the PS2, Halo and Halo 2 combined probably would have sold around 30 million units. (More than GT3 and GT4 put together)

What titles for Playstation ha shad more buzz around it then Halo. I know, NOTHING. Playsyation has been noticed for its unusual games and having a demographic of all ages. Xbox is for more Teens to Mature, cause most of them are action-packed shooters, or action-paked. There isnt a Playstation game out there that has made more of a "WANT CHANT", then Halo for Xbox.

PS2 sold more than Xbox because PS2 had a bigger demographic response to it. Ps2 could be played by anyone from ages 8-60. but Xbox is mainly a Teen-Mature rated system. Hardly any E games except for sports, and you wanna know why. cause the technology of the Xbox and Xbox 360 is meant for stunning visuals for blood and guns and shooting and all that stuff, thats why Xbox and Xbox 360 are filled with FPS's and shooting games. PS2 is more of a E-T rated system, with more games for kids than Xbox

MS has been working on smaller CPU size already so probably will be done with cutting cost faster then Sony will.

Well about the PS3 and it's going to bomb or not depends on a couple of things. If you say fanloyalty it wouldn't go down. I mean there is a large fanbase. But then there are some other facts:

1. All the things that had been written, which will have impact on Sony sales:

a.) price to high compared to 360 (the BR isn't an advantage and isn't worth 200 dollars extra whatever anyone says. BR isn't nescessary for games, for movies with the limitation of HDMI it's not nescessary. And don't forget BR is stand alone a very expensive format where HD-DVD is so much cheaper. New formats evolve @ PC users. PC users want cheap burners. They'll buy HD-DVD internal burners.

b. The delays, due to problems with BR, bad yields CPU/GPU and so on

c. Lies and lies over and over again on different stages. Including CGI footage @ E3 2005 which cannot be lived up to (see Motorstorm now compared to then and where has Killzone 2 gone?)

d. Lost biggest franchise exclusive ever, GTA4, the competitor get exclusive downloadable content with it on Live Marketplace. Other games 3rd party will be launched on both consoles like Assassin's Creed maybe only timed exclusive for PS

e. NO RUMBLE I'll keep saying that, it's just like a car without airconditioning. When you never had it, you won't mind. When you have it and it's broken you will complain. Like having a TV without electricity to watch it and so on. It's a big miss.

2. About the format for media, PS2 was a great option as a DVD because that medium was already accepted as a standard. BR isn't. Maybe we don't need bigger media formats anyhow. Look at marketplace. We got 1+ GB demo's already to download. Why not downloadable complete games? No distribution costs, less marketing costs, no retailer that has to be paid. Lower game prices, more profit for producers and no scratches on discs anymore.

3. Sony is in deep financial trouble. Last year they reorganised business and had to fire many people. Now still they're making large losses. First 3 months of this year almost 600 million dollars. See what a loss that makes in one year time...

4. MS does it the other way around. Has good revenues on total company so can loose some on the consolepart of the company. They now have GTA also. More important: MS has the money to buy great softwareproducers and gets 1st party game producer that way. New exclusives like Gears of War, Fable, Forza, Viva Piniata, Table Tennis and others. The 360 will have the best and newest exclusives because of that. MS also showed their console games @ E3 2005. Yes it ran on 2 apple mac's. MS showed footage that was actually graphically less capable then what the end result would be. The expectation was not so high as with Sony's footage. BUT when the end result is there and looks so much better then the initial footage, people say WHOW MS that looks great. BUT when Sony's end result looks less then the CGI footage that has been shown, people say OMG FONY YOU FOOLED ME... AGAIN!

That's just it. The way Sony tries to get people waiting for the new PS is a wrong way. And this time around they have the wrong competitor choosen to outplay. Dreamcast was easy with the company behind it had less money. This time around it's MS. ANd they never loose!

I don't think Sony is ready at all posting massive losses, Microsoft had double their clout when considering all the business they do, and Microsofts entrenchment in the PC market is so deep it makes McDonalds domination of the Fast Food world seem like child play. Over 90% thats... 90% of PCs in the entire world have Microsoft something attached or running on them. Titan your and ok guy and relatively well informed, you cannot think that if it doesn't come down to it with Sony in the trouble it is in they went so far as to "mysteriously" have similar lettering on the console that looks like Spiderman logo. Like the execs have said their not in it for the win. They ONLY ONLY ONLY care about blu-ray winning. That's the only way they'll make money off the PS3...FACT. If that fails, which it very easily could if Microsoft prices HD-DVD players at 150-200(not the 360 one). If microsoft wants to win THEY CAN. Microsoft uses twenties to start corporate bon fires. They just have to sacrifice revenue to win.

The biggest problem with blu-ray is the cost of stand alone players. 3 years from now they'll still be above 500 bucks, while HD-DVD can be 100-200. In the long run if the stand alone players can't be cheap than Sony won't be able to get past PS3's player. Therefore the market will reject it cause it'll be too expensive. Think about regular DVD, it caught on relatively well because it had cheap stand alones. NO FORMAT WINS WITHOUT CHEAP STAND ALONES. Because only a small portion use PS2's for DVD, and now DVD players are what 70 bucks. You've got to see blu-ray will never ever be that cheap in the next 7 years.

Trust me you won't even have the slightest clue who will win the format war until a year from now. Even then you won't. It'll last that long, trust me.

M$ is behind in sales (if you look at the worldwide picture) Sony and Nintendo will begin to really pick up steam in the months leading to their launch which will hurt 360 sales. No way that anyone could intellegently tell me that 360 sales will "pick-up" during the holidays. M$ needs to sell that 10 million before September or they will have a hard time reaching that number before 2007. If M$ had a real line-up of games thus far they would have been sold 10 million. PS3 and Nintendo are worldwide consoles while the 360 is simply a U.S. console. If you don't believe me just look at the numbers of consoles sold outside the U.S. especially in Japan.

THE TRUTH IS...... MS has a lot of ground to make up and they need games A.S.A.P. GTA won't be a factor til late 2007. The fact the blu ray has been delayed may in fact help the PS3 because they will release about the same time frame and when people see the price of a stand-alone player compared to the PS3 they will definetly see value. Another reason is Sony may be using the delay to produce more PS3's for release.

THE TRUTH IS.... if M$ has been losing in sales to the PS2 because they cut the cord on the original XBOX way to early, if M$ had strong suppot for it and a lower price people would see value in it and that competion would still be there. I don't think M$ looked out for the best interest for their customers with cutting down the support of the XBOX especially when it still had life left in it. Sony at least is supporting the popular format and the sales of games like kingdom hearts 2 prove that the system is far from dead. M$ should not be forgiven for this becuase the lifespan of XBOX was way shorter in comparison to the PS2(Xbox came out after PS2 and died before PS2) let's just "hope" that M$ doesn't make this huge mistake this generation.

i see alot of people praise the wii and put down the 360 and when asked this one ps3 fan goes on to say, because the 360 is trash, it uses dvd's for gaming and the wii is innovative. I see it like this tho, when you look at the specs of the wii, its pretty much on par with the original xbox and all the games will be on dvd format, at 480p, so how is his statement valid. Personally the 360 was the best way for me to go, and anyone who knows me knows that im a die hard ps2 fanatic since launch. The ps3 will be a nice system as well but since i had my 360 i've been sastified. But i want to know if any other ps3 fans feel this way about the wii???

[The Real Deal]

I had the playstation and the Saturn and the sega saturn games looked much better than the playstation games. Virtua Fighter was 3d and amazing. It was just like the arcade game. Saturn was just hard to program for and was priced too high..hmmm...lol...sounds familiar....Sony won out because quite frankly they had much more games and a wider variety. Thats when I liked sony. Then the dreamcast came out and blew me away. I loved the games. I loved playing online Fantasy Star Online and Daytona online...ect...Then I remember like it was yesterday...They announced the ps2 and said it would have toystory in game graphics and would be 10 times more powerful than a top of the line PC. I was so excited. I still loved my dreamcast though. the games were top notch and just plain ole fun. When the ps2 launched I got one day one. I bought every launch game. I was soooooo disappointed. And I know I wasn't the only one. Dreamcast 2nd gen games quite frankly were better than sony's launch games. Remember...this is coming from a Gamer. I buy everything. Then the dreamcast section at my local eb got real small. They put the systems and games in the corner meanwhile ps2 was hyped and had the biggest section up at the front of the store. My relative was a manager there and he told me that corporate made them do that. Now I don't know what Sony did to make that happen but we all knew it was about MONEY. Sega ran out of it and Sony took over with a ps2 that did not outperform the dreamcast as far as games went. Real gamers were ready and waiting for a real gaming machine to come along. Then came xbox. Just what gamers had been waiting for. Microsoft would not run out of money and they created a better system from every stand point. Xbox live is top notch and HALO...wow. But you know what? Blu ray just got released. I went to best buy and they had the blu ray player up front and center on a big 1080p tv. I asked the guy today can I see hd dvd compared to blu ray. He told me hd dvd isn't hooked up anymore because corporate won't allow them to hook it up. So guess what? It was in the back corner where no one can see it. I then told him I wanted to see them running on the same display. He proceeded to hook it up for me. He and I agreed hd dvd looked a tad better than blu ray. He told me sony paid best buy to premier their unit and not display hd dvd. Sounds familiar. Are we going to be tricked by sony again folks? NOOOO we are much smarter this time around. If you don't believe me...go to your local best buy and see for yourself. The guy told me he gets requests every day to see a side to side comparisson of blu ray and hd dvd. But corporate won't let them have them both hooked up for display unless requested. WOW...Think about it.
