This explains a lot and it shows that for me and for many people (Millennial and Gen x) things will get even worse. At least there are good games and classics for a life time. Last game i bought was Elden Ring years ago.

There's a couple of guys at work, they are roughly the same age around 22/23 yet all they do is spend their money on Fifa points or on Call of Duty skins, it's so f****** sad.

I mean hey, its their money, fair enough but try to talk to them about any other games and they have no clue.

These guys have no idea about scummy practices and how it actually hurts gaming overall, now I know why EA, Ubisoft and the like do what they do, because most younger gamers are sadly misinformed idiots who think all this is the norm.

Yep N4G is definitely a bubble where people are actually aware of the trends in the gaming industry as a whole, but the the average gamer doesn't actually talk about or think about any of the things we do unless they watch a streamer who tells them they should hate a specific game for a specific reason.

This was really driven home to me when PSN had that outage a few months ago on a Friday (US) and the PlayStation subreddit was overwhelmed by people just lamenting not being able to play their chosen live service game that particular evening. Obviously PSN (and another similar service) has no excuse for being down, but it was enlightening (and depressing) to see how many people have no notion of playing anything but a live service game, even for a few hours.

It's the 20% rule. A new model doesn't have to be that popular to "change the industry." If cloud gaming, subscription gaming etc. only siphon off 20% of the gaming market, they put a huge strain on the "traditional" sector -- resulting in studio closures, layoff, and companies shifting their focus to this "new growing model." Then, it becomes like a self-fulfilling prophecy; studios feel this new model is the future, so they shift to it, so then it becomes the future.

It's what happened to other traditional industries -- TV networks lost a small portion of viewers to streaming, but that 20% or so were enough lost viewers to put them under, or make them change their focus to be more like streaming, ie. serialized shows or reality TV.

Bottom line, the vast majority don't want these things, especially at first. But the 10% minority that do, are what drives the change. Then eventually, we are all forced to accept the new, inferior model because the whole industry shifts to it.

Mind you, I could be totally wrong. I am a bit high right now.
