Nintendo Removes Mention Of Switch 2 Supporting VRR In Docked Mode On A TV

Nintendo appears to have gone back on its prior claim regarding the Switch 2 supporting Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) in docked mode on a TV.

Has anyone else brought this up? Seems like an odd thing to do but there’s obviously a very specific reason for it. Would like to hear from Nintendo directly before the console releases as people including myself have pre-orders that have been placed due to the official information we were given at the time.

as it's said in the article, maybe it's not ready for docked mode and will be added with a firmware update at a later time.

Considering the device itself supports it, and the dock is ultimately an HDMI passthrough at the end of the day, it doesn't make sense why VRR wouldn't be supported while in docked mode (on TVs that support it).

Most VRR set are supported through HDMI 2.1 standard. Has Nintendo verified the HDMI version for Switch 2? Is it 2.0 or 2.1?

1nsomniac38d ago (Edited 38d ago )

It's been verified by Digital Foundry as being HDMI 2.0. That's also why it's limited to 4k 60hz and not 120hz.

Tacoboto39d ago

Sony only supports VRR through HDMI 2.1 on PS5, but HDMI 2.0 (supporting 1440p120hz) on PS5 does not support VRR. On Xbox, it does.

If the Switch 2 Dock doesn't enable HDMI 2.1 output, yeah maybe it can get a firmware update down the line, but if VRR is indeed not supported through the dock, Nintendo went the lesser-effort route of Sony instead of the more robust support Xbox has.

Or maybe this is also a limitation of the Switch 2 having built-in G-Sync support and they are reluctant to promote the AMD FreeSync for VRR that's used in many TVs

Loktai39d ago

"Robust support" - Wheres that support when it comes to games?

Tacoboto39d ago (Edited 39d ago )

Irrelevant and ridiculous comment but I'll bite.

Since December Xbox has released Indiana Jones, Avowed, South of Midnight, is a weekend away until the Oblivion Remastered drop, and is less than a month until Doom releases. Get over this spammy trolling

Edit - and can't forget the Forza Horizon PS5 port. Great games across multiple genres and platforms. To keep it on topic of Switch 2, hopefully that platform will be able to get some of these too later this year.

If I had to guess Nintendo is horrible at explaining complicated tech and people may think their tv can do vrr because it's the switch 2 and that does vrr but not realise the tv has to be compatible.

It's not a problem for people who understand it but for the every day person they may not get it that's all I could think of as to why because there shouldn't be a technical limitation at play here unless they cheaper out on the HDMI port of the new dock

Or it's just firmware related the ps5 didn't get vrr at launch that came later

badz14938d ago (Edited 38d ago )

Compatibility is one thing, but is the feature supported through HDMI is the real question. Portable mode might be played on the 120Hz VRR screen but this screen is 1080p and 1080p120Hz can be achieved with HDMI 1.4b but at the very least we knew the Switch 2 supports 4K output so HDMI 2.0 is the minimum. BUT In dock mode, the system might be limited to HDMI 2.0 with no VRR and up to 4K60Hz only. It's all speculation right now.

1nsomniac38d ago

@ProfChaos, that's a very fair point and also a very Nintendo thing to do, so you could be right.

Mike6939d ago

Well Nintendo must and should come clean about Vrr in dock mode for Switch 2.Its something that i and other people that order the System were expecting.I really think comunication on Switch 2 has been very bad.

ZycoFox38d ago

You'll be lucky getting much if anything out of them, it wasn't long ago that someone at Nintendo was saying they didn't want the public complaining about tech specs or something.

Profchaos38d ago

I think iwata talked about how much game development costs would rise and cause problems for the industry I don't remember any comments about people complaining about tech many Nintendo staffers often liked funding new ways to use old tech like the Gameboy or Wii

OpenGL38d ago

It took the PS5 years to actually get VRR support so maybe this will with a firmware update in the future.

What a shitshow of a console. Another wiiu incoming.

It will be the last Nintendo console with any physical games anyway.

gold_drake1d 2h ago

are u fking kidding me lol

why would the code be expiring

Yi-Long14h ago

Switch 2 really went from a ‘Day 1 Must Buy’ to a ‘Might pick one up some day in the future’, because of all the anti-consumer decisions Nintendo has made for their new console …

jjb19813h ago

I think about lot of it had to do with the amount of piracy that is going on with the Switch. Its like they want the hackers to try and pull the ROMS from the system itself versus just dumping it from a physical media. It just sucks that it had come to this point. Nintendo will keep Nintendo-ing.

Inverno3h ago

Modders are gonna hit the Switch 2 hard, and piracy is gonna be even higher on it than the first. That or 3rd party support will dry out sooner than later when enough people realize publishers don't wanna put in effort with physical releases on the system. People underestimate the casual consumer, when they feel screwed over they won't stick around like the fanboys. And with the astronomical prices of Switch 2 games I honestly can't see this succeed in the way Nintendo expects it to.
