PS5 vs Xbox Series X|S Sales Comparison in the US - February 2025

February 2025 is the 52nd month the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 5 when compared to the aligned launch of the Xbox Series X|S by 146,486 units.

In the last 12 months, the PlayStation 5 has outsold Xbox Series X|S by 3.06 million units. The PlayStation 5 is currently ahead by 8.43 million units.

Since Xbox doesn’t release numbers and they are estimating for Xbox the gap is probably bigger than shown here.

Xbox is being over tracked by over 5 million units at this point. I believe that NPD/Circana USA/North American tracking is responsible for the vast majority of the over track.

NA sales are probably closer to 12.5m than the 16.7m they report here.

Because AMD chip sales show that vgcharts is reporting that Xbox has "sold" more Xbox's than AMD has "shipped" chips, which was also recently noted by Strauss Zelnick who claimed that Xbox was only around 25m in November when vgchartz said Xbox was over 30m.

Well, then there's that. I gotta say that I really must have missed that AMD news then. Maybe I was out of town or something.

But yeah.

From gut-feeling (=having followed the Xbox quarterly reports) alone, I don't agree on the 32m figure on VGChartz, either.

Some weeks ago I noticed that they indeed had adjusted them down by 600-700k.

But there was a news in the Wall Street Journal last Summer that claimed the X|S shipments were at 28m as of end of June 2024.

Either way, if all those 3 sources were true, then 32m sell-through seems definitely to be overtracked by 2m units, at minimum.

It's been outsold by 3 million in just the past 12 months. It's over 8 YTD in the US. For their best territory, it is a catastrophic result!
