BG3 Voice Actor Says CEOs Want To Use AI To Save Money Even If It Means Destroying Their Reputation

The voice actor behind Baldur’s Gate III character Karlach has slammed gaming CEOs for their application of AI in development, saying they simply want to save money even if it means destroying their reputation in the long run.

Speaking with EDGE, Samantha Béart also touched base how actors will react to the continue push for AI in gaming, feeling they won’t simply back down while the technology effectively takes away their jobs.

Crazy though because destroying their reputation will turn people against them and you'd get more people overtime who will just not buy their products meaning less money.

So by "saving" money they end up losing it along with any good will they had with their audience...and i's not something you can get back so easy.

anast98d ago

What you stated is not how any of this works for billion dollar companies. They aren't concerned about the people who care now. They are setting this up for future generations that won't care. Young people playing games now, do not care. When they have children, their children won't care. Bad taste and good taste depend on the parents. Yes, they will lose money now from the older crowd, but they will make way more off of the people who won't care in the future.

Popsicle98d ago (Edited 98d ago )

Unfortunately you are correct anast. They are focused on the long game. It was the same thing with micros transactions that eventually morphed for some developers into pay to win schemes.

My daughter for example. She has grown up with her friends all playing Fortnight, Roblox, etc and has no real concept that items used to be earned through gameplay and we’re not an additional expense. For her gaming is live service and cosmetic or pay to win micro transactions because that’s all she has ever known.

Lionsguard97d ago

Yeap, it was the exact same way with DLC. Everyone remember Horse armor? Yeah, no one cares now and if that were released today, no one would bat an eye, in fact, many would probably buy it. It won't stop here, in-game ads and commercials will be a thing one day because young people growing up with mobile games are used to it and no matter how much Steam will try to shield it for consumers, it'll happen one day because the demographic of players who will be used to it will exist and the money that comes with it will be too hard to ignore.

But I thought people keep saying AI is garbage and it won't take any jobs..?

Yeah, pretty sure those who had jobs doing adult calls are out of a job, like those you used to see on late night TV.. Plus numerous other *ahem* adult entertainment stuff.

They're already starting to use robots on car assembly lines. Not just the standard robot arms like you see in factories, but full humanoid robots, Mercedes included, not just Tesla.

So things are going ahead.. To be honest I kind of want a huge change anyway, we haven't had anything earth shattering happen for a long time, yes we've had powerful computers, smartphones etc..But this will be bigger than anything we've ever had if it continues to advance at a rapid pace over the next decade or even before that.

David Bowie saw something in an interview from 1999 : https://m.youtube.com/watch... I know anyone can make predictions or whatever.. still makes you think.

Furesis98d ago

Everything you said have also had negative side effects like less jobs, people becoming more isolated from the world and doom scrolling and not talking to people! Fuck this tech and ai it is slowly ruining us as a civilization and the only people who benefit are the corpos. I dont need any more new bullshit to even further the gap between us humans.

I really miss the late 90's / early 2000's it felt more... human. Now everything just feels so... fake
Could be because i'm older but i don't like where we are headed as a society.
MGS2 kinda predicted this. Kojimbo does it again

anast98d ago

There is not enough people that actually care enough to do anything about any of this. I'm not sure people understand that we are a part of the animal kingdom. All species consume until the end, we as human primates are no exception.

ZycoFox98d ago

I understand the frustration, but I noticed people becoming less and less chatty as soon as social media took people away from programs like AOL instant messenger, ICQ, MSN.. they were all popular until around the mid 2000's, they eventually all got killed off.. How ICQ is even still around I'm not sure. There's no point using it today.

But just saying this was happening before AI was even really a thing anyway on that front.

MrDead98d ago

"But I thought people keep saying AI is garbage and it won't take any jobs..?"

...haven't we been warned since it's inception that it was going to take away jobs?

"They're already starting to use robots on car assembly lines. Not just the standard robot arms like you see in factories, but full humanoid robots, Mercedes included, not just Tesla."

China has automated factories that make a car every minute, check out the Chery Intelligent Manufacturing Factory and their robots are way ahead of what the US and the EU are currently using.

The speed AI is being integrated is worrying. The industrial revolution took 150 years to spread and for workers to adapt, it took 30 years for the digital age to be fully adopted and for the workers to adapt, AI in this form has been around for a handful of years and is already changing industries and destroying jobs.

ZycoFox98d ago

It's been 50/50, when ChatGPT was quite new I remember a bunch of people saying it won't go anywhere because it was crap and unreliable, today it is much more refined, not perfect... Yet.

Then there were people saying image generators were crap, they weren't much good at first, now look at them, we also had the odd few people saying video generation would amount to nothing useful in our lifetime.

The thing I'm most excited for is curing diseases, and this is why I hope advancement is rapid.. diseases and ageing sucks and the sooner these issues are solved the better.

goken98d ago

If someone’s voice is used to create an AI voice performance, that someone should have royalties for the usage. It’s the same with someone’s image.

The advent of AI shouldn’t be just another way the ultra rich get richer in the expense of ordinary people…

anast98d ago

In an ideal and just world, yes. But, in actuality, no .

Inverno98d ago

CEOs don't have good reputations that's why people want em dead. Don't think they'll care much.

CrimsonWing6998d ago

I know this sounds heartless, but if it cuts down cost and dev time, and I can’t tell it’s an AI voice, I honestly vote for AI.

I appreciate the article but this guy must be living in a delayed universe, The reputation was ruined 10+ years ago and hasn't recovered since. As such people have voted with their wallets and stopped buying Xbox products in large amounts.

What reputation is this threatening exactly? 😂

Rumors of Turn 10 being either shut down or hit with massive lay offs is on the horizon.

The issue is MS will do something right only to do something very, very wrong. And they do this what seems calculative at this point. Doesn't matter what they do the Investors and leadership want more and more money an endless bottomless pit of purr insatiable greed. A company that acts like it's broke or hurting is what really, really infuriates me. They've surpassed apple again well over 3 trillion who acts like they're a million dollar company is fk stupid. Pivots and changes for no reason and can't do things for more than a year with out a pivot or changing their metrics.

That would be really bad since Phil just hyped up next year as a big Forza year at Summer Game Fest.

The 'Stop Killing Games' initiative is close to its final deadline

Ross Scott—also known as Accursed Farms on YouTube—has been fighting tooth and nail for almost a full year to help spearhead game preservation. Starting after it was announced that Ubisoft's The Crew would be shutting down, permanently ending support for the game, Scott launched the "Stop Killing Games" initiative.

That makes a twofold deadline for the Stop Killing Games initiative. Or, at least, one headed up by Scott: The UK petition, which ends July 14, and the EU Citizens' Initiative, which ends July 3.

If you live in the EU then Please sign this or our game ownership rights and game preservation is
at stake. I know there isnt much time left but please consider signing the petition

-Foxtrot3d ago

I never knew Ross Scott was doing this

I love Freemans Mind

People whine and in the end don't do a thing. Then whine more when they get screwed some more smh. If this makes it then it'll be monumental for consumers. That Pirate software guy was no help either smh.

The EU Date is the 31st July not the 3rd

"Players can now hide system apps, pin favorites to the list, and reduce the number of tiles displayed. This update is part of our ongoing effort to make Home more personal, flexible, and responsive to feedback."

This is welcomed, i like a less cluttered home screen.

Well anything that adds and help gamers is a good thing even if some don’t need it there’ll be more that will use it.

darthv724d ago

Well its MS news... those are usually pretty dry, unless it has something to do with another game being ported to PS. then its top of the pops.

Oh look no further than the "Upcoming layoffs at MS" topic. It will easily top the Hottest of the week.

Special guests like Mr. Dead might also show up. You just watch.
