Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a virus that attacks the body's immune system, specifically the CD4 T cells, which are crucial for fighting infections. If left untreated, HIV can lead to Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), a condition where the immune system becomes severely weakened, making the body vulnerable to life-threatening infections and cancers.

HIV is primarily transmitted through blood, semen, vaginal fluids, and breast milk. It spreads through activities like unprotected sex, sharing needles, or from mother to child during childbirth or breastfeeding.

Although there is no cure for HIV, it can be controlled with antiretroviral therapy (ART), which helps manage the virus and allows people with HIV to live longer, healthier lives.
