When Nintendo announced the Switch, lots of people predicted doom and gloom for the company (especially after the Wii U).

When VALVE announced the STEAM Deck, lots of people predicted doom and gloom for the company (especially after the STEAM Machines failed project).

Now it´s MS turn.

IAMRealHooman127d ago

IF MS is gonna publish more of their first party for the others ( specifically the switch 2) even less of incentive for an MS handheld. switch 2 will have a solid install base by then with the access to Nintendo's library and "select" Xbox titles, might aswell just be a fulltime publisher now.

neutralgamer1992127d ago

Phil has said he does not care for platforms he wants their games to be playable on as many devices as possible. Please understand that and stop comparing Xbox to other platforms. Gamers should be celebrating the fact MS are allowing us the ability to play their games on our device of choice. Instead some are taking victory laps of some sort

Knushwood Butt127d ago

^

So MS want to sell their games on Switch 2, either directly or via gamepass, but they also want to develop and sell their own handheld to do the EXACT same thing?

VenomUK126d ago

Let's jump ahead two years to summer 2027.

Microsoft releases its sleek new Xbox handheld console with more power than an Xbox Series S that can play all legacy Xbox games and new Xbox games in handheld mode. Valve releases the Steam Deck 2 and it can play all Steam games. Which would be the most compelling to the mass market?

Xbox is a console platform that the general public recognise (although in 2027 its value may have diminished), so producing a handheld that only plays bespoke Xbox games will not compare favourably to the Steam Deck 2 that plays all PC games and PlayStation PC games. So what are Microsoft's options?
Option 1: just play Xbox games.
Option 2: Play Xbox and PC/ Steam Deck games which means having publishers build a version of a game for a platform where the users may choose the Steam Deck version.
Option 3: Only play PC/Steam Deck games.

Obscure_Observer126d ago (Edited 126d ago )

"IF MS is gonna publish more of their first party for the others ( specifically the switch 2) even less of incentive for an MS handheld."

True. Same goes for their next gen Xbox console. But that´s MS for ya. Money over brand identity.

@Knushwood Butt

"So MS want to sell their games on Switch 2, either directly or via gamepass, but they also want to develop and sell their own handheld to do the EXACT same thing?"

I believe it´s gonna be a couple of selected titles on the Switch 2. Plus, I believe MS to deliver a more powerful/advanced device.

But all remains to be seen.

rudero127d ago

Not at all.
How would the steam deck doom steam?
Even though they sold less than 1% compared to their install base of active users, steam just prints money off of steam.
They can and have just threw stuff at the wall because they can.

Nintendo has a games issue but even then, they sell nothing at a loss. Ever.
Sure there was a fan base that have and do hope Nintendo would release a competing console in the range of a current Xbox or PlayStation… but they never will.
Handhelds have been their bread and butter for well over a decade…
It only made sense to make their console THE handheld.

Microsoft does not make games or have anything to do with innovation… per hardware or game development.
So why make a handheld?
They have not made anything to even warrant their console.

RaiderNation127d ago

Christ, dude! Do you have some kind of alarm in your house that notifies you when a new Xbox-related article posts in here? You are ALWAYS the first responder to these articles!

pwnmaster3000127d ago

Nintendo already dominated the handheld business, what are you talking about?

chrisx127d ago (Edited 127d ago )

N4G should really implement a block button. There's just some people's comments that turns me off from coming to this site, like this obscure guy. Its sad seeing this deluded comments on every single post

ABizzel1127d ago (Edited 127d ago )

That’s not true at all about the Switch. The general consensus of the Switch was that it would at worst do similar number to the 3DS (70m - 75m), and at best similar number to the Wii (+100m). Nintendo’s handhelds had ALWAYS outsold their consoles in the same generation, with the Wii being the only console to ever outsell any of the handhelds at all, and that was the blue ocean strategy.

People didn’t think the SteamDeck was a bad idea, the issue with that was the vocal minority screaming about high-end specs as if that’s what the majority of PC gamers own, which is a far cry from the truth. The concern was Valve isn’t a hardware company and as you said people didn’t want a SteamMachine 2.0. There wasn’t doom and gloom, people were just cautiously optimistic. The doom / gloom you speak of was people assuming Steam Deck would do Nintendo numbers, which was unlikely to happen as it was supposed to be an accompanying device for PC gamers and possibly console gamers who don’t want to dive into a full PC market which was a niche audience.

The issue now is that there are way too many players in this space that Microsoft and even Sony (who already attempted this) have to face to win people over. The Xbox consoles are losing ground generation after generation, and a handheld isn’t really a fix in the eyes of many, especially when you can already GamePass everything on existing handhelds PCs.

The problem with these handhelds for Sony and Microsoft is there has to be a hard choice made.

1. Entry price, $199 - $299
Or
2. Peak Performance, $399 - $599

Entry Price $199 - $299 gets you lower-end mobile hardware, which has come a long way and fine for streaming GamePass, but native Series games are going to be a struggle porting, or you can get a Series S.

Peak Performance, $399 - $599 get you dedicated hardware around the Xbox Series S performance (much higher with FSR4), but the Series X is still going to be more powerful and $399.

So who are these products for, especially Microsoft when there are already devices out now that do likely +90% of what a Xbox handheld would do, and +80% of what a PlayStation tablet would do?

There’s nothing wrong with them doing this, I just don’t see the market being there for it to be an extremely successful platforms, at best I see the handhelds doing around 1/3 of their console sales as a way to take your consoles on the go, as long as it’s completely seamless.

andy85127d ago (Edited 127d ago )

Yes but Nintendo had proven success of them, Xbox hasn't and are releasing one in their worst period in 20 years. That's likely the difference

ThePacemaker126d ago

Why would a sane person buy the Xbox handheld, if Switch 2 is going to have all Nintendo exclusives, a full third party support & a strong Xbox studios support (as per Phil Spencer)?

PapaBop126d ago (Edited 126d ago )

Well there is a key difference between Nintendo, Valve and Microsoft, two of them are extremely successful with decades under their belt of successes in gaming, the other bought some brief success but has been on a downward spiral for over a decade. Two of the brands dominate their respective market segments, the other is scrambling to remain relevant. Guess which ones are which.

Technically.... they already did. People dont realize the Logitech G-Cloud is an officially licensed product and was promoted on the Xbox website.

https://www.xbox.com/en-US/...

Problem is, that was still not their own product. So they are looking at doing something more in house.

RaidenBlack127d ago (Edited 127d ago )

But I dont want the handheld SKU to share with Xbox Prime, a la Series S with X.
Dont want another weak hardware dragging the next generation. Series X is pretty powerful but the Series S hardware limited its prowess. The 'sliders' theory didn't pan out well, so for a tablet that'd even be worse. Another generation spanning the likes of 4TF to 16TF would be dumb.
Let the handheld be part of Series x|s family, so that if devs require a next-gen game design centred around 20TF+ , the weaker handheld + current gen consoles can be ignored i.e pure next-gen game, not a cross-gen-tablet-compatible game.

darthv72127d ago

It was a good idea... having a low cost point of entry and a high end enthusiast system to cover both sides. I get that the enthusiasts feel like the peasants are holding them back, but that isnt how it works. you say slider dont work, i say they do. i have not seen any game that could not run on the S because of its specs, and that includes things like BMW which has been tested to run on the S. This narrative is all played out. The era of having to cater to the lowest common denominator is not new, its been like that since the VCS. we are a long way from the days of only needing the latest and greatest to play the newest. People can play the newest on a much wider range of options now. Nobody should be mad at having more ways to play.

RaidenBlack127d ago (Edited 127d ago )

@dsrthv72
"i have not seen any game that could not run on the S because of its specs"
That's the thing Darth.
Since 2019, the devs knew the specs of the current gen. They knew that in order for their games to run on wide variety of platforms, they had to keep the 4TF Series S' specs in mind and had to accordingly design their games in order to maximize sales. Couple that with the sudden pandemic plus cross-gen dragging on, the design stayed somewhat last-gen, minimizing any risk.
And the cross-gen mentality will continue with the mid-gen introduction of Switch 2, since its as powerful as PS4 and maybe upto One X with DLSS. And publisher will support Switch 2 widely for first ~2 years due to Nintendo's big fanbase.
So to conclude. The theoretical next-gen revolutionary game design promised for this gen? Yea, that might happen only in pure next-gen only h/w. Anything that can be on PS5/XSX is just last gen with RT and higher poly count.
I didn't mind Series S this gen but dont want a repeat.
If you want to force a ~4TF handheld with the 22TF+ consoles .... well it'll be just current-gen 2.0 or last-gen 3.0.
Just give it a thought. I am against MS leaving console h/w market but I dont want MS-Switch forced with XboxPrime/PS6/RTX6090.

D2niceforu126d ago

Well yes but they are looking for a more streamlined native companion. Just think about gamepasss, cloud, mobile and more.

Popsicle126d ago

The corporate speak. Is this an advertisement? 🤮

SimpleDad127d ago

I think Handhelds should be as much open as possible, meaning you should install on them what you want.
From retro games to modern titles as the hardware goes.

Having another closed handheld is not appealing to me... at all.
Maybe because I'm not into Xbox ecosystem... but who would be, giving the fact that every screen is an Xbox at this point.

Inverno127d ago

Only benefit would be a less bloated and compact windows. Which would be very beneficial actually for those who mostly game on PC or is tired of how sluggish windows be with all the AI spyware.

You got downvotes by pathetic gamers for feeling hopeful about good games coming out next year. Imagine how small your brain must be to downvote someone excited for future gaming joy? It is pretty neat to see people's world view blow up in front of them as they realize Microsoft has put themselves in a driver's seat that Sony hasn't been able to touch all generation.... What's even more pathetic is the same people downvoting you are the same people wishlisting Microsoft games on their ps5s 😂

P_Bomb2d ago

“Imagine how small your brain must be to downvote someone excited for future gaming joy?”

My dude your post history shits on EVERYTHING. You never have a good thing to say about anything lol! 🤣

PanicMechanic2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

“Getting ready for those GaaS reveals! Sony is a shadow of themselves this gen.”

You literally said this a couple of days ago. Start applying the clown make up, you hypocritical jester

derek2d ago

Yep we'll see, they have alot releasing next year.

RaidenBlack2d ago

NGL, next year might be one of the best years in gaming ... starting off with RE9 and GTA VI ...
and then all the good games that's been cooking
Pragmata, Sands of Time, Saros, Gears E-Day, 007 First Light, Blood of Dawnwalker,
Mortal Shell II, Onimusha, Marvel1943: Rise of Hydra
current-gen only Infinity Ward's CoD, Duskbloods
+ My guess: Wolverine, Exodus, Mudang, Crimson Desert, Clockwork etc ...
~ seems like it might get too stacked

1Victor2d ago

@rokos:”Hopefully “
I downvoted you not for been hopeful but because I have seen the same “NEXT YEAR WILL BE SPECIAL “ comment for the last 10+ and hasn’t seen anything special from Microsoft.
I hope next year will be the one that everyone been waiting for since the last 3 years of the Xbox 360, it have to be after over $80 billions spent on acquisitions.

Lightning772d ago

So the new excuse is they don't count because it's from the ABK now huh. I guess all those 3rd party games count even less because they don't own them. According to your always crappy logic.

InUrFoxHole1d 20h ago

Lol. You haven't seen anything special? Do you even game?

OtterX2d ago

Always with the "next year..."! 😂

neutralgamer19922d ago

I don't know they have delivered this year and even last year. And they have a lot more content in the pipeline right now than anyone else. We can't just keep hating on MS

Indiana Jones
South of midnight
Avowed
Flight simulator
Hell Blade 2
Minecraft update
Gears of war reloaded
Indian Jones:expansion
Gears E day
Clockwork revolution
Fable
Doom the dark ages
The outer worlds 2
Grounded 2
Call of duty

OtterX2d ago

How many of those titles were just buyouts of companies that were going about making their games anyways? *Throws cash - "Oh look what we made!"

dveio2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

This list, that's been posted again, and again, and again in every single topic like this, contains almost nothing, literally almost nothing from Microsoft's own creational thoughtprocess.

It's a bunch of former 3rd party IPs.

Now even slowly returning to Playstation in some cases like Indiana, Hellblade, probably Starfield soon too, after they were made exclusively to Xbox on purpose.

Due to Microsoft's lack for own IP material except Halo & Forza. Which, the lack of, was the sole reason for all of it to happen in the first place anyway. Please don't pretend it wasn't.

And just look at all the games that come from Obsidian alone.

You really think Obsidian wasn't already working on Avowed and South of Midnight even without Microsoft buying Zenimax?

Microsoft delivered nothing but cheques.

OtterX2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

@dveio THIS. Lol, this dude thinks Call of Duty wouldn't exist without Microsoft! smh 😂

neutralgamer19922d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Common narrative I see often — that Microsoft shouldn’t get credit for the games its studios release because they “just bought them.” But this viewpoint ignores key context and sets a double standard that other platform holders aren’t held to

No one is saying these games wouldn't exist at all without Microsoft. But let’s not pretend that having a trillion-dollar company backing a studio doesn’t make a massive difference. Obsidian never had AAA funding before the Xbox acquisition. Pillars of Eternity was crowdfunded, and their resources were always stretched thin. Now they’re working on Avowed, with proper support behind it.

Ninja Theory’s Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice was made by around 20 people, using borrowed equipment and doing mocap in a boardroom. It was a passion project held together by tape and willpower. Today, Hellblade II exists because they were given resources, time, and freedom — something many developers don’t get unless they’re owned by a company that believes in their vision.

ZeniMax (Bethesda’s parent company) was in real financial trouble before the Microsoft acquisition. Reports and insider accounts have pointed out how much they needed a cash infusion. And while some people want to write off Xbox’s ownership of Bethesda titles, they forget the alternative could have meant layoffs or even closures.

The same goes for Activision Blizzard. Would you really prefer the company to stay under Bobby Kotick, after all the documented workplace misconduct and toxic leadership issues? Say what you want about Microsoft, but their acquisition brought accountability and change to a company that desperately needed it.

At the same time, Xbox gets hated on for doing what every major company does. Sony bought Housemarque, Bluepoint, Insomniac — but no one says Spider-Man 2 “doesn’t count” because of that. Why does Xbox get treated differently for acquiring struggling or undervalued developers and giving them a chance to thrive?

And the idea that Xbox locks games away is outdated. They're pushing cross-platform releases, cloud gaming, Game Pass, and backward compatibility more than any other platform holder. They're not forcing all studios into live service. If anything, their upcoming lineup is less GAAS-heavy and more focused on narrative and creativity — Avowed, South of Midnight, Clockwork Revolution, Fable, Perfect Dark, Towerborne, and others show real variety.

Whether people like it or not, Xbox is now the biggest publisher in the industry and owns the most gaming IPs. But what matters more is how they treat their studios. Most of these teams were previously stuck making AA games with limited scope — now they’re getting the tools and support to aim higher.

So when people say “Microsoft didn’t make those games,” they’re missing the point. It’s not about who started the studio — it’s about who enabled them to do their best work. You don’t have to love Xbox to admit they’ve helped a lot of developers and are taking a player-first approach.

Instead of writing off everything they do, maybe try recognizing the good they’re doing for both devs and gamers. At the end of the day, we should want more studios to succeed — no matter who owns them

BeHunted2d ago

I'm surprised Clockwork Revolution (BioShock meets Dishonored) isn't getting more media attention. The game looks interesting and reminds me of the old RPG games.

anast2d ago

The only good game on that list is Flight sim. The rest are either average or will be average. It's not a good look for MS.

TheEroica2d ago

My god.... Look how many comments are upset about microsoft's successes... 😂 This may be my new favorite thread. Not one gamer saying thanks for all the goodness coming their way, just bitter anger and downvoting the very games they themselves will purchase throughout 2026.... Sony really worked you guys over this generation.... Condolences.

DivineHand1252d ago

@neutralgamer1992 You said what needed to be said.

I have heard for years from older gamers that fanboys are the biggest issue with any fanbase. They will defend or gloss over negative news as long as the correct logo is on the box and they bash the competing platform no matter how much good they are trying to bring.

Right now their advocacy for PlayStation is elevating that platform so high that Sony no longer believes they need to do anything to satisfy their loyal fanbase like they did in the PS4 days.

I just hope most of them will eventually start advocating for themselves and encourage others to do the same. No one should blindly support one platform because these companies do not care about anything other than profit.

neutralgamer19922d ago

Hunted

And first proper game done by the studio with proper AAA budget and saying it will be released when ready

Anast

I believe we went through this before that you are objectively wrong. Meta critic, user reviews, game sales. In Playstation top 10 best selling games were 5 from Microsoft studios

Otter

No this dude is saying so many other studios wouldn't be thriving without MS money and people would be getting abused physically and mentally with Bobby kotick and his side kicks

Also maybe look up how the original founder of Bethesda and zenimax was kicked out of his own company by his best friend lawyer. So that was always a shady place and had been struggling financially before MS paid a premium of almost 7 billion

Eroica

I use to be a die hard Playstation fan and now I only have a Pc. I see how these fans are so toxic. They just can't handle any positive news regarding Xbox. When the best selling games on playstation are Xbox titles. Look at Forza horizon being best seller and that's years old game by MS. I guess ms don't deserve credit for that success too since they are the only company in gaming making acquisitions

Forget the fact Sony paid 3.6 billion for bungie and MS 6.9 for zenimax. Which investment has turned out better

Destiny and marathon with a lot of controversy

While zenimax output is nothing short of amazing compared to what bungie has released

crazyCoconuts2d ago

Yeah it's tricky. "Xbox" has morphed to mean different things to different people.
Console, now Windows, GamePass, and the cross platform games. There's a mix of attitudes towards all those things individually, and maybe an overarching attitude towards MS. But can't argue that the game companies MS recently bought continue to flourish, and GamePass PC has been a great value over the last year.

They've had good output so far. So waiting for those games shouldn't be a problem.

Who cares if they're buy outs of companies or whatever excuse you want to make. They're games that are being distributed to other console. Play the games and enjoy it instead of fanboying or complaining.

Dear God it's been 4 years since infinite and no official update on anything lol.

Tacoboto5d ago

No official update on anything?

They replaced studio leadership
They changed the studio name
They announced the change to UE5
... all while supporting Infinite

The support to Infinite isn't what it originally should have been but they've still been providing tons of official updates over the years, and as recently as two months ago added a brand new weapon.

GamerRN4d ago

I think remaking Halo Combat Evolved, and going to 2 and 3 again, will help give the studio an idea of how to make a Halo game feel like Halo again

Tacoboto4d ago

Infinite did feel like Halo, that's not what the complaints were...

The complaints were almost literally everything else. Monetization, netcode and desync, the campaign structure, story, and single biome, the weaker-than-expected post-launch content.

InUrFoxHole4d ago

Gotta agree. Infinite felt like halo.

Profchaos5d ago

Dev times in modern days 4 years of silence isn't unheard of when things are running smoothly.

And around 6 months ago 343 did show a tech demo of ue5 using halo assets so it's not radio silence.

Given all the shake ups i am more surprised we're getting anything next year at all.

RaidenBlack5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

They coulda started with Halo 3 remake ... I know Halo CE remaster was not proper with the art style but still, remaking after a remaster seems dull, when Halo 3 and Reach have started to show some age.

PhillyDonJawn5d ago

Yeah I hate they used Halo reach artstyle. Hope this remake feel authentic yet fresh

--Onilink--5d ago

Probably the simplest to work around with. They are reportedly doing it in UE5, so its just as much an Anniversary thing, as its probably the studio getting familiar and setting up their tools and processes in the engine with an actual game, to facilitate the development of the next Halo

Profchaos5d ago

I'm guessing combat evolved has a smaller scope in general the later half of the game features a ton of backtracking and reused assets making it a easier game to remake on a deadline

Its also a better choice if this is the first game to be multiplatform mind you I think it's pretty much a given that anyone with a passing curiosity has played this by now in some way be it pc or brought a used console for a few bucks

darthv725d ago

This will likely come to PS5 at the same time. 25 years of XB.... shared with PS.

Obscure_Observer5d ago

It´s gonna be among best sellers on PS Store next year regardless.

raWfodog4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

I would love to see Lost Odyssey come over to PS5. I would definitely buy that again. That was the first game that I played on my 360. Loved the story and battle system. One of the best JRPGs of all time in my opinion.
