The RTX 5080 smoked Sony's best console in our testing, here's by how much

Sebastian writes: "Considering between the two? We find the most significant differences between the PS5 Pro vs RTX 5080 to find which is best for you."

Neonridr129d ago

No surprise there, the equivalent GPU in the Pro is said to be around a 4060 Ti.

Nitrowolf2129d ago

$1000 for just a GPU, vs a $700 fully featured console isn't exactly the type of comparison that I would call fair anyway.

It certainly is dumb, and would be embarrassing if the former wasn't better

Neonridr129d ago

Depends on the person. Most avid PC users already have very capable PCs, so the only need is to purchase the GPU for example.

so while entire setup might be heavily slanted to one side, a single purchase between a new GPU and a PS5 Pro is worth a thought I guess. But ultimately it comes down to what you like to play and how you like to play it.

@neon

What you’re proposing assumes you’re an avid PC owner. For every PC owner in such a situation there is a PlayStation owner in the opposite situation.

PC offers the better experience with no price considerations generally. PS5 Pro offers the better experiences for the money.

Babadook7128d ago (Edited 128d ago )

@neon

Depends on the person but disingenuous to argue from the point of view of being already invested and somehow the cost of the cpu and motherboard don’t add to the total. Those need to be upgraded too and no doubt have been recently for anyone adding a 5080. Wonder how many thousands PC guide spent on that machine without mentioning the number.

Nitrowolf is spot on.

DazaMc128d ago

Neonridr, most PS5 Pro users had a PS5 to sell (I certainly did), bringing the Pro's cost down to £400

RedDeadLB128d ago

1000$ my ass, it's selling for close to 2000€ where I live. The 4080super is at 1200€ still. What a joke of a generation.

LikAChicken128d ago

@babadook7

I'm sorry why would you need to upgrade your motherboard and CPU for every new GPU?

SPEAKxTHExTRUTH128d ago

1k is for the founder’s edition of that gpu which u ABSOLUTELY cannot find at retail price. The TRUE price of a 5080 is $1250 minimum. Pointless comparison and my 4070 Smokes a PRO.

Neonridr128d ago

@Babadook7 - do you factor in the price of your fancy new 4K TV in the cost of a Pro? Or do you assume you already have one?

Christopher128d ago (Edited 128d ago )

***do you factor in the price of your fancy new 4K TV in the cost of a Pro? Or do you assume you already have one? ***

This isn't a winning argument. PC gamers also need a 4k monitor or TV. And it doesn't need to be fancy or new unless you want to see the best out of your latest GPU. The whole point of consoles is to buy everything pre-packaged in one and use it for 7-10 years. The point of PCs is to have the option to upgrade whenever you want, but there are absolutely costs and the possible need to upgrade multiple elements to achieve that, which will be more expensive than just sticking with a single piece of hardware over 7-10 years. Even more expensive than buying both the base and then mid-gen console upgrades.

Why are we even arguing this when that's the whole point of PC. You decide how much to invest and when and you're happy with it?

Also: ***Most avid PC users already have very capable PCs***

Yeah, most "avid" PC users spend way more on their PC than all console gamers spend on hardware.

Babadook7128d ago

"I'm sorry why would you need to upgrade your motherboard and CPU for every new GPU?"

@Likachicken
I didn't say that. But you'll need to upgrade them just as often and most likely more often than once a console generation.

neutralgamer1992128d ago

Neo

Most Pc gamers still use a 1080TI. As a Pc gamer we can't compare Pc to PS5/XSX. My GPU alone was twice the cost of PS5 PRO. Some tech focused youtubers tried to build a $700 PC to compete with pro and couldn't do that. Yes console gamers will complain because of the cost but I think many times they forget a $700 console that will be useful for next 5-7 years is much better value than a $1000 cell phone for 3-4 years (most people buy phones much more regularly)

1440P at steady 120FPS Pc costs around $1400-$1500

Neonridr128d ago

@Christopher - same goes for the Pro.. why would you use a 4K/60 TV with a Pro if you can't even use features like HDMI 2.1?

Christopher128d ago

***@Christopher - same goes for the Pro.. why would you use a 4K/60 TV with a Pro if you can't even use features like HDMI 2.1? ***

What? You're the one who made it seem like PC gamers wouldn't need a new monitor/TV to take advantage of the latest tech they just bought. Why are you bringing this to me when you completely missed it but tried to make it out like only console gamers would need it?

I mean.. according to DF, next gen consoles won't even match previous gen high end GPUs, given the lackluster increases for the 5000 series I can see it.

Babadook7128d ago

They’re dumb if they believe that.

mkis007128d ago (Edited 128d ago )

If( and i have heard this is too low a comparison) the ps5 pro is the 4060ti and not a new generation...the ps6 will absolutely by more powerful than the high range of that series...possibly not the 4090, but the 4080 should be a sure thing...3-4 years from now.

Tapani128d ago (Edited 128d ago )

You are correct. With technology like DLSS4 and the Transformer model you can essentially render at 1080p and get a 4K-like image. FSR4 looks like a winner from the early hands-on reports, so maybe the PS6 can utilize something like that with an 3D-Vcache CPU/GPU to come closer to Nvidia. I don't think the UDNA topline will be close to even RTX 5090, so maybe around 7900XT performance is possible for the PS6, just with a better upscaler and a proper Frame Gen.

FinalFantasyFanatic128d ago

It'll probably be low to mid-range 5000 series, I think, technically the 1080 ti trades blows with the original PS5, and that's an 8-year-old GPU. But by then, the 6000 series will also be out in the wild, I'm thinking 5070 or 5070ti in terms of performance.

Bs! My 4060 smokes the PS5 pro. I know, I have both and I can push the graphics more on my 4060 and still have better performance.

Gamingsince1981128d ago

Odd because I have a 4060 ti and I can't get any kind of decent 4k experience at all on my pc not even close to the ps5 .........neither have any of my customers at my pc store.

andy85128d ago (Edited 128d ago )

It really doesn't. I have a 4070. It's certainly comparable. The only proper advantage I have is being able to have 120 fps in anything I want. But on actual graphics? There's no smoking

VenomUK128d ago

Hopefully PC Guide can do a comparison between the $2000 Nvidia RTX 5090 and the standard model PS5. I’m no expert but I’ve a sneaking suspicion that Sony’s console is really going to get smoked! Ha ha.

FinalFantasyFanatic128d ago

@VenomUK,
It's not even a competition, the 5090 be double the performance, and maybe a little more than that, it's a bit of a cruel comparison to even attempt.

Gamingsince1981127d ago

@ff fanatic

I think that was venoms point, this articles comparison is stupid considering the gpu costs more than a ps5 pro.

Junryain88127d ago

The cope is real. The PS5 pro is not better than a 4060. It sounds like a you problem.

FinalFantasyFanatic127d ago

@Gamingsince1981
True, I guess I'm just reinforcing his argument at this point, although WTF is with the disagrees? The standard model PS5 isn't even in the ballpark of the 5090's performance, there's been about 2 or 3 generations of Nvidia GPU since the original PS5 released. And the original PS5 is about a 1080Ti in terms of performance, or a 3070 if you want a more modern comparison.

@Neonridr, youre not winning this debate.

z2g128d ago

4060ti is 22 TFLOPs. That’s 7 more than the ps5 pro - and you’re not limited to RDNA 1.5 (ps5s don’t run true RDNA 2). This is running RDNA 3

Stupid headlines like this create unnecessary rifts and engagements.
Of course the more expensive gpu will beat the less expensive console.

Christopher129d ago

While I am the person who submitted the article per my job, I agree with this assessment as an individual. Sadly, these headlines get people talking about it (hence the 4 and now my comment before it even gets approved). People can't but help to call out the stupid stuff, which means it gets promoted more and normalized more. What a society we live in.

Christopher: ‘don’t blame the player, blame the game’!

Christopher128d ago (Edited 128d ago )

@VenomUK: It's going to go here anyway. You want someone who might push anything through no matter what or someone who knows what belongs and how it should be properly submitted doing it?

Edit: Sorry, didn't mean to be harsh. Just, well, the reality we live in.

VenomUK128d ago

@Christopher Hey Chris, don’t take my joke personally, just having a little fun!
