RTX 5080 Is Worst Ever 80-Class GPU In Terms of Generational Leap

Nvidia's RTX 5080 appears to be quite the downgrade over its predecessors, showing the smallest generational performance increase.

Glad I went with the 5090... £4300 though for a new build, glad it doubles up as a work PC because damn that's a pricy meatball.

gold_drake82d ago

uh yea thats ridiculously expensive ha.

Nitrowolf282d ago

as long as you aren't coming from a 4000 series, going to a 5000 series card does make a lot of sense even if its lackluster

MrDead82d ago

Going from a i9 10900k, 3080, 32GB to i9 14900k, 5090, 64GB.

What about my 4060? Should I keep it or jump into a 5080?

Nitrowolf281d ago (Edited 81d ago )

@Junryain88

You would essentially be updating to a 4080 Super. It's a fair jump since the pricing is the same there, and the 4060 was already considered weak and overpriced.

Generally rule I think it skip a gen before upgrading. I'll say the 5000 series has the worst uplifts over the previous gen compared to the past series, and they're overpriced.

Either wait for the 5080 Super, which hopefully follows the 4080 Super pricing and just replaced the 5080, or just hold off another two years for 6000 Series

Yup I'm still waiting on mine. One positive thing I will say about the RTX 5080 is that it's an overclock monster if you're into that.

I haven't even got a date for delivery on mine yet, normal time is 7-14 days for a custom build but the 5090 is popular so they can't guarantee delivery in that time frame.

I'm not in a rush though, just happy I got it.

Why are you still buying Intel?

MrDead81d ago (Edited 81d ago )

Because Intel are a lot better for work PCs, AMD isn't very good for large format editing, constant spikes and stuttering from poor workload spread across the cores shows a lot more when working, you don't notice as much when you're gaming.

Good thing Old Willy's got these laying around the general store.

I picked up a used AIB 4090 for less than £1200, they cost much more on CEX and eBay, built like a tank and looks like it will be a top tier card for at least the next couple of years.

5090 is so disappointing, 20-30% better at best for over 2x the price I paid? Yea no thanks lol

5080 kind of shat the bed but that was expected given its specs I guess.. I wonder if the same will happen next gen? I heard they'll be on a new node so we'll see.

But I mean.. even DF said not long back that even next gen consoles won't stack up to current high end cards.. dang, maybe we really are in diminishing returns, or if there are any uplifts they'll be super expensive like the 5090.

FPS_D3TH82d ago

Still going to keep my 3080 since I mainly play competitive fps games and frame generation is entirely useless to me. What a disappointing generation the 50 series is. Reliance on AI is such an L.

DivineHand12582d ago (Edited 82d ago )

While I understand that the rasterized performance leap of the card is underwhelming, you have to take into account that the mid to high end 40 series cards are discontinued. For persons on the 20 and 30 series looking to upgrade, the 50 series cards are a no brainer. Let us tone down on the negativity and allow those persons to be excited for an upgrade. If you are on the 4080 Super, then it means you recently got that card and shouldn't be looking to upgrade anyways. At least wait for the 5080 variants for an upgrade or wait for the 60 series.

AvP on the Jag was pretty ambitious for the time. I always wondered what a smoother (faster) frame rate would have done for that game. nice to see a spiritual sequel is in the works after all these years.
