I can't believe Nintendo would rent games to people where the whole catalog as a whole is worth less than the yearly subscription price.

Tacoboto159d ago

A yearly subscription cost to NSO+Expansion Pack is $50.

$50. Cheaper than a single new game.

Profchaos158d ago

I take it you've never tried to buy any retro games then.

Earthbound a single she's game can go for hundreds of dollars while even basic games that are plentiful like super Mario Bros 3 can still run into the 30 odd dollar territory for a pretty wrecked copy.

So no I would say if you took the total value of the nso library and attempted to buy those games it would be extremely expensive and time consuming

Profchaos158d ago

@reddevils I tend to agree in a way I use everdrive flash carts on retro systems because I find emulation is to sharp and clear and looses a lot of the effects but for most people it's fine.

But the argument here was the value that all the games on the nso service were somehow worth less than the cost of a years subscription

ZeekQuattro159d ago

The later years of VC were horrible. Basically TurboGrafx games and little else as more and more 3rd party companies opted to do their own retro game collections. Which honestly I prefer as I can usually get those physically.

ZycoFox159d ago

Or they could've just made a plug in device with multiple cart slots for backwards compatibility.. I don't know how well that would've worked but similar worked well for them before.

DarXyde158d ago

Hot take here, but I like Nintendo. They're weird and backwards and take forever to meet some standards we come to expect and take for granted today... But I love their games and commitment to a different vision for gaming that at least tries to make fun factor the priority.

Where I think they're crazy is charging $50 for a service that's, in my opinion, inferior to the PS3's free PSN.

BlaqMagiq1158d ago

The shift to NSO is idiotic. Paying to play 20+ year old games monthly will NEVER make sense to me. Bring back VC like it should've never left and I will buy your old games to play whenever I want.

Square makes some very weird decisions.

This is really stupid and just baffling, the explanation for it is also a big non answer, very disappointing.
