The Callisto Protocol PS5 Pro Update Runs The Game At 8K/30 FPS Or 4K/60FPS With Ray-Tracing On

Those with a PS5 Pro console can now run the game at either 4K/60 FPS with ray-tracing on or 8K/30 FPS, also with ray-tracing on. Dead Space Remake has yet to make the list.

Okay this blows the whole PSSR narrative out the water. I'm sorry EA and Konami... you gotta take the L here. The issue is they wanted to claim they were running enhanced without doing the work to actually update their game to use the good version. Now excuse me while I go download this update.

Edit: The game even downsamples 8K back to 4k! Chef's kiss

All you have to know is it's EA and Konami... nuff said

If anything, it proves the UE5 narrative.

Callisto Protocol is a UE4 game, and it already ran quite well on the PS5, as demonstrated in its own trailer. The game was capable of displaying 4K at 30 FPS with ray tracing enabled and 4K at 60 FPS with ray tracing turned off. It was already a bit of an edge case on the console because it didn’t drop the rendering resolution between modes. It consistently rendered between 1440p and 1728p, then upscaled to 4K. The only differences between Quality and Performance modes were ray tracing and some additional effects.

Plus, as you know, PSSR is ML-based, so results will vary depending on the application.

actually it downsamples from 6K down to 4K (if you don't have an 8K display)

It's a shame that some companies apparently aren't using the latest version of PSSR which is causing issues. Hope those ones get fixed and this isn't an issue going forward.

Eonjay213d ago (Edited 213d ago )

it goes a little deeper than that. Apparently, if the game was being developed on the older SDK, it wasn't supporting the latest version of PSSR. Remember back to when Sony's Dev Net docs specifically stated that you could inject it into games without updating the SDK? Well, maybe they shouldn't have allowed that because if the dev was too lazy to update, they weren't gonna get the best results. Perhaps Sony could update the older SDK (prior to 10.0) to incorporate a newer PSSR version or perhaps there is a reason why it wouldn't be supported. Obviously, I am not privy to those details.

However, it is still up to the DEV to evaluate the result and determine whether to use it or not. And some of these issues are very apparent to anyone who actually spent 10 minutes to QA it. I believe that some devs just wanted to have the PRO Enhanced tag as marketing and just added it without doing the work to check if it was acceptable. This is very unprofessional. The games would have been boosted without PSSR as tests have bore out.

As with most things in this thing we call life, if something doesn't make sense or is purely illogical, it probably has something to do with money.

I really hope that the new consoles will not focus on 8k graphics. I mean its impressive that a mid gen console runs such a demanding game on 8k but still uncessary.

First of all the adoption of 8k tvs is not great yet and the extra resolution reaches diminishing returns territory whereas other graphics aspects (character AI physics, great distance views, real time weather effects, path tracing etc) would definitely add more to the games.

Besides in the past we opted for resolution increase following the developments in monitors and yet we still dont have 4k/60 for many games let alone with raytracing.

Next gen should deliver 4k/60 for most games with 1440p/120fps options with raytracing for instance and increase other aspects

Imagine a battefield game with fully destructible environments and weather effects with physics better than those found in Tears of the Kindgom.

Well... there is one huge benefit as Calisto shows and that is the ability to offer downsampling.
