Microsoft’s Gaming Chief Is Still Open to Acquisitions After Activision Deal

Bloomberg:

After a tough year, Microsoft Corp.’s video-gaming chief is still looking at acquisitions and charting how to compete and partner in the markets for handheld game devices and mobile stores.

Deals that add “geographic diversity,” including in Asia, might be worthwhile, Phil Spencer said in an interview Tuesday at Bloomberg’s offices in New York. Buying another mobile company would add to titles Microsoft picked up in its $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard last year, he said.

Phil Spencer wants PS fans begging for Xbox games to be on Playstation since he´ll continue and play coy on whether, which and/or how many games are actually coming to PS5.

Starfield should had being announced at this point, but so far, nothing!

Einhander1972211d ago

I liked this quote.

"After releasing the first batch of Xbox games for Sony Group Corp.’s PlayStation and Nintendo Co.’s Switch, Spencer is pleased with the results. Microsoft will do more of that, he said, and won’t rule out any game in Microsoft’s stable."

ThinkThink211d ago

The issue I keep seeing in these forums is that people don't seem to know the difference between nothing is off the table vs active planning and porting. I could tell you that nothing is off the table, but then turn around and port just 2 games from the entire catalog, and then leave you guessing about the rest. Not saying I hope they don't, because I would prefer they put their games everywhere. It certainly is free advertising as I don't remember a time when I've seen this many people hopeful for xbox ports.

Einhander1972211d ago

ThinkThink

Let me put it to you this way, 5 years ago everything was off the table.

RaidenBlack211d ago (Edited 211d ago )

For the sake of the Xbox brand value/identity ... atleast Halo and Forza Motorsport should've been redline. Everything else .... okay, I guess?
Forza Motorsport will have hard time competing with GT in its home turf (but also releases more frequently than GT)
On the other hand, Forza Horizon IP is newer and can benefit jumping to PS, being a 1st party high quality arcade racer, which Sony lacks atm. So 1 Forza IP can jump to rival console whilst retaining the OG main IP.
Halo, well ... Master Chief's helmet is embossed inside every Series X. If this doesn't tell anything about redline & brand identity ... I dunno what will.
But if hardware business is secondary now ... then indeed "everything is off the table".

Einhander1972211d ago

RaidenBlack

Realistically, how much longer do you think xbox is going to be in consoles?

I mean, let's be real here, xbox is tanking, the sx is well behind both the xbone and the 360 and the chart is trending downward. It's hard for me to see any next xbox device doing better than the sx, the handheld is going into an already crowded market which already has game pass and all the same games plus the Switch 2. And another console has all the same problems the sx does.

They can't really back down from PlayStation when their games are generating more profit for them on PlayStation than their own device.

The xbox console is the only thing keeping them from putting every game on PlayStation and Switch and some bean counter has to realize that putting games on PlayStation and Switch is more profitable than making a console no one is going to buy for the sole purpose of having a reason to keep games off PlayStation and Switch

What is the end goal by constantly saying they still plan to put games on PlayStation and Switch?

Do you actually think that by saying that games could be coming to PlayStation and Switch it's going to help sell more xbox consoles for them or something?

I mean, since they started saying this, sales have only gotten worse for them.

If PlayStation and Switch gamers weren't missing those games enough to buy an xbox up till now. I feel like the most likely outcome is that they will be more likely to just wait than to buy an xbox. Much like people on xbox stopped buying games because they might be coming to the subscriptions.

darthv72211d ago (Edited 211d ago )

Man... you and others like you are so determined to keep the doom and gloom going surrounding XB. You have such a disdain for the brand that you wont even see that it is your own bias that keeps you from just enjoying this hobby for what it is no matter the hardware.

i swear my generation is truly the last of its kind as we never were that petty as to say we dont like a platform because we dont like who makes it. i see people commenting and asking about getting this game or that game and I wonder why the hell are they begging for something that is readily available to them right now? All they have to do is get the damn system and they can be playing away to their hearts content.

Like what is it about Xbox that is such a boner killer for Playstation gamers? Did their entrance in this industry threaten you all in some way that you cant get passed it.... 25 years later? i dont give two shits if this gets a most downvotes in N4G history.... somebody come up with a good explanation as to why there is this one sided view about Xbox, please.

dveio211d ago (Edited 211d ago )

@darthv72

The Xbox brand today is only the result of 25 years of executing the brand the way they did.

I didn't say anything subjective with that.

But for the gamers themselves, there sure are many subjective reasons why the Xbox brand is nowhere near being as popular as Playstation.

I didn't say anything subjective here, neither.

And as far as I am concerned, and I am totally subjective now:

I truly dislike Microsoft as a company. Always have, always will.

You can find a whole Wikipedia article dedicated to Microsoft's misbehaviours as a company since they are existing.

And I dislike the way the Xbox brand is being kept alive.

Kottick wanted to sell (for obvious reasons). And Xbox needed to buy (for obvious reasons).

I dislike everything of it.

Especially these parts of the Xbox community that are praising all of it highly.

And then continue to subscribe to a business model that is cancer to us and developers and rights.

While at the same time searching for the cheapest deal or key to re-new GPU.

I am truly honest and subjective now - I dislike the guts of the Xbox brand, especially because once again they went into the Series generation without having nothing prepared by themselves (except Forza, one Halo and Flight Sim).

And after 25 f'n years, parts of the Xbox community are cheering them for buying out Call of Duty.

This is everything they wanted 25 years ago?Buying out CoD at some point?

Deserved.

ApocalypseShadow211d ago

Darth, stop fooling yourself in why we have this beef with Microsoft. You already know. Because you were on the front lines as well pushing green. They like to monopolize. They spent all their money on marketing that they were equal instead of just creating some damn games for their console. Played up power and the cloud and shitty games that turned out to be outright lies. Which is another thing. They constantly lied to the gaming community, lied to their base and lied to themselves about where they were actually are in relation to Nintendo and Sony.

They sold garbage that they knew was broken instead of a recall. They forced a camera no one wanted. They pushed for paying for online when everyone with a brain knew that it would eventually affect everyone else because they set a precedent. Micro transactions and not thinking ahead like larger disc sizes for games, larger digital file sizes, etc. They sold overpriced accessories while Sony had everything built in. Almost every negative thing was started by Microsoft. Then, when nothing worked, they started using their immense wealth to buy up the industry. Throw money like we've all seen before.

You can't tell us that a trillion dollar company was doing all they can to make games at the level of Nintendo and Sony. You definitely can't say they are now at 3 trillion. They'd rather play us as if third party games, now under their belt, was somehow created by them. Bullshit.

Buying all systems is okay in theory. But why support the lack of effort, mediocrity and incompetence? You buy systems like postage stamps. Got to collect all the versions and shit. It's your money. But it's dumb as shit. I only bought console where the parent company put in work. You're just wasting your money in my opinion. But it's your money. The reality is that no one needs an Xbox if they have a PC, Nintendo and Sony console. It's redundant. There's nothing different about their hardware. Just a lot of hot air. And while I'm at it, they bought multiple companies that developed game for VR. Now those companies don't. So, Microsoft hurt the VR industry by buying up a large group that were helping that grow.

So thanks for your blind support. You and others are why they have gotten away with all the nonsense they have brought to the industry. They haven't grown anything. They have taken away. And you helped them.

Einhander1972211d ago

darthv72

Microsoft spent 100b to buy two of the biggest multiplatform publishers to be able to control the flow of games that go to PlayStation. And they weren't targeting just any publishers/developers they were specifically buying developers and publishers that had ties to PlayStation. They were undeniably trying to undermine PlayStation, and don't think for a second they aren't trying to put PlayStation out of business.

And you want to talk about 25 years ago when Steve Balmer was talking about how the're entire goal was to take the market from PlayStation and Nintendo. They have from day one been trying to put PlayStation out of business, while also using shell companies to buy billions of dollars worth of Nintendo shares.

The sooner xbox exits consoles and is forced to be a publisher the better for everyone.

The only thing your mad about is that its xbox that lost...

crazyCoconuts211d ago

There is something wrong with the "nothing is off the table" approach. Try saying that to your wife next time you're headed out to a pub. Xbox as a brand has a relationship and informal contract with their console owners.
Stay loyal to Xbox and you get these exclusive benefits. Saying nothing is off the table is in essence saying that "contract" is no longer important

darthv72211d ago

@above... y'all said what you dont like about Microsoft... I asked what is it you don't like about Xbox. MS is an asshat company... but I dont hold a grudge against the Xbox. It seems many do because of their disdain for the parent company.

The hardware is solid, the controller comfortable and the games are fun. If people have an issue with that... then they must hate video games in general. Fun games are fun games no matter the platform. For those who think that buying into XB somehow rewards MS for them being asshats... nope, buy used. It rewards the user by letting them play the games available NOW instead of playing the waiting game of if/when will it come to something else.

Einhander1972211d ago

darthv72

"The hardware is solid, the controller comfortable and the games are fun."

PlayStation has better hardware.
PlayStation has a better controller.
Microsoft games will be more fun on PlayStation.

"You have such a disdain for the brand that you wont even see that it is your own bias that keeps you from just enjoying this hobby for what it is no matter the hardware."

Trust me, owning an xbox isn't required to have fun playing games. And from our position xbox is making our hobby worse.

"I asked what is it you don't like about Xbox. MS is an asshat company... but I dont hold a grudge against the Xbox. It seems many do because of their disdain for the parent company."

There is no xbox without Microsoft, without Microsoft Zenimax and Activision would still be independent publishers.

Profchaos211d ago

@darth no I think every generation of gamer since the 80s has had these same fights be it Atari v intellivision, Nintendo v Sega, Nintendo v PlayStation, Xbox v PlayStation

Schoolyard fights that have expanded into the internet that's all it is everyone wants to defend their plastic box

Xbox to me died around the launch of the Xbox one prior to that I was a fan and a multi plat gamer I loved the original Xbox even though I had a ps2 I would still go to a friends house and spend countless hours on halo mp along with owning a 360 before a PS3 and eventually buying a Xbox one for halo 5 but when their games started noticeably suffering due to quality I completely left them alone it was clear the gamepass model didn't leave room for high quality releases and it was content over quality we were never going to see a return to form while gamepass exists

darthv72211d ago

@chaos... thank you for reading comprehension. you understood the assignment and commented accordingly. Sure as a kid we would banter about NES vs Master system or SNES and Genesis but we all still played them. some had one or the other and going to different friends houses to play what we didnt have ourselves gave us a bit more appreciation of the hobby as a whole.

You grow up and get older, you have the ability to expand your own field of interest. you take that appreciation and experience with you and expand your horizons. what you said made perfect sense in that changing ideas of the powers that be can cause ripples that can turn people off because they feel like they are not being catered to. But that still doesnt mean the platform is bad and not worth at least a fair chance. My own consumption of XB games have dwindled this gen compared to the previous, which itself has dwindled compared to the one before that but I do still partake as I know that limiting myself based on some notion of mistrust in the parent company is not something that crosses my mind.

Im a believer that everything (like everyone) deserves a fair chance. if I dont like something, it is what it is. but I dont go around harping on the negative all the time like many on here do.

Einhander1972211d ago (Edited 211d ago )

You're just mad because it's xbox under fire, you never have anything like this to say when people a roasting coals under PlayStation.

S2Killinit211d ago

Yes hoping for, but also pushing xbox out the door and into publisher territory.

Knushwood Butt211d ago

- The hardware is solid

Now? Not in the past.

- The controller comfortable

Well, they got one thing right.
I personally find 'joycons' very poor but that hasn't stopped Nintendo selling a few.

- the games are fun.

Highly subjective, and I've done just fine for 'fun' without ever buying an xbox, or any recent Nintendo box for that matter (besides a used Wii U that I've hardly touched).

@darthv72

Good to see you’ve finally stopped pretending to be neutral and are back to showing what you’re really about!

The simple response to your concern for your favorite company is this - they put themselves in this situation. They’re putting their games on PlayStation because their ecosystem has weakened considerably. You can either blame them or “the gamers” but that’s an objective reality and you may as well get used to it.

Obscure_Observer210d ago

@Einhander1972

"What is the end goal by constantly saying they still plan to put games on PlayStation and Switch?"

Obviously make money while keep you all on the hook. MS will make big money out off both Nintendo and Playstation player bases whenever they want to.

There´s a catch, though. You´ll continue and be kept in the dark wondering when, which and how many games are coming just like you´re now.

"Do you actually think that by saying that games could be coming to PlayStation and Switch it's going to help sell more xbox consoles for them or something?"

You narrow-minded individuals fails to see the big picture. MS doesn´t care if Xbox console beats Playstation console or not. They´re winning! They have the most studios. They´re making tons of money out of everyone playing their games on every platform.

Both Sony and Nintendo *needs* their console to sell well to keep their business alive. MS did not!

MS has the luxury to keep and continue with the console business just to be a torn on both Nintendo and Playstation´s side.

And that´s what makes *you* bitter and sad, my friend. You dream of a world free of Xbox consoles and Xbox gamers, because you know that every single copy sold to Playstation gamers at full price, will only empower MS and Xbox gamers like me in the end. Deny all you want, but deep down, you know it´s true.

"If PlayStation and Switch gamers weren't missing those games enough to buy an xbox up till now. I feel like the most likely outcome is that they will be more likely to just wait than to buy an xbox."

They shall wait. We´ll be getting everything day one on Gamepass. I´m cool with that idea.

darthv72210d ago

Oh hander... you are full of shit. I never once said the Pro was bad and nobody should get one. I said it wasn't worth the money [TO ME] at this time. Know the difference between shitting on a product because you dont like the company that made it and criticizing the price because it may not be worth it.

derek210d ago

@ThinkThink, the problem with your comment is that you believe anything Spencer has to say at this point he's all over the place. Spencer has publicly changed his position on this issue several times just this year, I don't believe he's the person who makes this decision anymore. I don't think it's worth speculating on which other Microsoft games if any will be coming to playstation besides those that have actually been announced.

Einhander1972210d ago

Obscure_Observer

Let me be real with you, the money in gaming isn't selling software, it's having a platform to sell other people's software.

So, Microsoft gets a bigger cut of 10m sales of CoD, but Sony is selling 400-500m total units per year of software plus a cut of all the MTX sold on the platform. And that money is highly profitable, unlike developing games which is costly and you only make profit after selling x amount meaning it can even be at a loss.

And again, at some point (probably much sooner than you think) Microsoft is going to cut the console, their whole business is moving away from console, Phil Spencer famously said flat out they can't win in consoles against PlayStation and Nintendo.

You think a game as big as Starfield can be ported overnight? These things take time. It's more than likely that they simply want to release it closer to it's announcement, to avoid getting more accusations that they announce things far too early only for them to take years to actually come out.

Obscure_Observer211d ago

Spider-Man 2 will be ported to PC in one year.

So yes, Starfield should had being be announced for the PS5 by now.

Halo: Combat Evolved - low-key hinted at by Phil Spencer!

I've listened to this man talk for 15 years, he is PR trained and does a lot of word play to conceal information without lying (I notice this stuff). In the Bloomberg interview he said “I do not see sort of red lines in our portfolio that say ‘thou must not,’ ” he said, adding that it was too early to make a decision on the next version of Halo".

He is talking about no decision made about the NEXT version of Halo. Leading people to think there is nothing to announce now, when likely the Halo:CE remaster is secretly cooking!

@Obscure

I’m trying to figure out how you’re comparing an exclusive console game going to PC (which is way more common, especially for Xbox), to an Xbox console exclusive going to PlayStation. Shouldn’t you be comparing the same thing?

It took Sea of Thieves six years to come to PS.

bionicstar210d ago

Before Activision and Bethesda Xbox was just a rounding error on their books now post it's a massive investment the Microsoft bosses want to see a return on.

Gampass is hitting a ceiling there's only so many users that will stick with the service numbers will spike around a major title like cod but they won't remain you'd be lucky to see 30 percent of new gamepass players who brought into the model to play black ops 6 stick around after say 3 months otherwise they could have just brought the game forever at this point it's likely the uptick was just people wanting to smash out the campaign and play a few rounds casually

crazyCoconuts211d ago

Indiana Jones is currently their highest profile game and it's coming over without even a year delay. None of us know for sure but the trend is obvious

Hofstaderman211d ago (Edited 211d ago )

Its just the start. More so the COD sales numbers got Satya's mouth watering. But even before that, they needed to make that Activision sale money back and make more money on top of that. Remember, the money they spent on Activision could have earned them money elsewhere. Shareholders always want their dues.

Aloymetal211d ago

PS fans are not ''begging'' for any ''xbox games'' the few interested could easily buy the cheap S and play it there. Like I always say, the problem with the green fans is so many of you have such a false sense of relevancy for your platform and same goes for your games.

Hofstaderman211d ago

If they had the games I would have bought an X easilly, my 360 packed up but cannot justify the expense to play my disc 360 games. Opted to just buy a used 360 on the cheap.

RaiderNation211d ago

Exactly. They are so delusional. The only game they can lay claim to PS fans giving a crap about is COD. And that's just because PS fans already cared about it before MS bought it.

S2Killinit210d ago (Edited 210d ago )

if PlayStation fans are “begging” for xbox games while they also have their own games, imagine what xbox fans are begging to have anything at all that everyone else doesn’t have.

goken211d ago

Seriously by the tail end of the xbox one generation, the console was going for dirt cheap… must say i was tempted for 2 minutes then i thought: “what the hell am i going to play here? All my games are on PS. Xbox exclusives that were worth playing were few and far between.”

I didn’t see the point then, still don’t see the point now.

Christopher211d ago (Edited 211d ago )

***Phil Spencer wants PS fans begging for Xbox games to be on Playstation***

Right. Also, perhaps, Microsoft likes making money. I don't think anyone was begging for Grounded or Sea of Thieves, though nice to see them go there, compared to classics like Halo and Gears of War on PS4/5. They're just slowly expanding their offerings on competing platforms to make more money. Nothing more, nothing less.

Hofstaderman211d ago (Edited 211d ago )

An inevitability when the Activision deal went through.

Kornholic211d ago

No one has to beg for MS for that to happen. They HAVE to release those games on PS since you don't pay for games.

RIP Xbox. No reason left to buy one

ThinkThink211d ago

Plenty of reasons. Put me down for whatever console they have coming out in 2026 along with the handheld and I'll be happy. If it make you feel better to pretend it's dead, that's cool too.

mkis007211d ago

I believe you are premature to think one is coming in 2026. There is no reason to believe that rumor anymore.

cthulhucultist211d ago

Plenty of reasons yet you neglected to mention a single one. By my point of view, who buys consoles for their exclusives, I do not see the value of getting an xbox now when (presumably) most games will be available on other platforms that I already own.

I will say the same if and when Sony announces that all its games are coming to PC (in that case, PC will have me covered) or Nintendo in the future (maybe never but the market is changing right now).

If you only have an xbox and you dont care about exclusives, then I can see the value for you, no arguments there. But if you own any other console that plays xbox games or even PC, why bother buying a dedicated console for something you can already play without spending hard earned money on a new console?

Besides game pass is also available on PC.

S2Killinit210d ago

Well I mean why buy a xbox when you are only getting some games, when you can play all those plus more on other consoles? Thats like buying a console from EA that only plays EA games.

InUrFoxHole210d ago

🤣 why is there no reason to buy an Xbox? Because you can play the games on other devices? By that metric isn't there also no reason to buy those other devices because you can play the same games on xbox? Now if your arguement is you'd rather not buy an xbox and play on the other devices... I can see that. But to say there is no reason for an xbox. Well that's just plum dumb

cthulhucultist210d ago

@InUrFoxHole If you read my reply carefully, you will see the point I am making. If there is a console that can play both PS5 and Xbox games and another one that can only play xbox games, which one will you buy?

S2Killinit210d ago

No because you can also play those other consoles’ own games only on those consoles.

What you are saying is like saying you would buy a EA console just to play EA games when you can buy a console that plays all EA titles plus others.
