Astro Bot Sales Have Reached 1.5 Million Copies, Sony Confirms

Sony Group Corporation has confirmed that sales of Team Asobi's 3D platformer, Astro Bot, have reached 1.5 million copies.

Not really a fair comparison. Crash 4 sold, last we heard 5 million copies across 6 different platforms compared to 1, and over almost 4 years. Also off the back of the highly successful remakes, and it being a decades old, established IP.

It's only been 2 months, Dev team of 60, only a 3 year dev cycle, it doesn't need to sell 5+ million units to be a success like most big releases these days.

Personally I'm quite happy, I always thought if it can sell a couple of million by years end then that'd be great. This game deserves all the sales it can get.

It sold well in raw numbers. But if you consider that there´s 65 Million PS5 consoles sold worldwide, 1.5 Million didn´t reached many PS5 players.

Mario has been around for over 40 years. Crash was multiplatform and been around for close to 30 years. Astro Bot is doing fairly well for a newer lesser known IP

If it was a Ubisoft game, they'd be saying it fell short of sales expectations. That's their problem, though. They have unrealistic expectations. But then again, if this was a Ubisoft game, it wouldn't be as good.

If it were a Ubisoft or Microsoft game, regulars on N4G might argue that the game is overpriced for an AA experience, similar to the case with Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. Additionally, there's a consensus that the game would receive lower scores simply because it's made by Ubisoft. There would be skepticism regarding its Game of the Year nomination, as it's not considered a true AAA title. For evidence, one could look at previous comments on HI-FI Rush on this site. However, this is 2024, not 2023—it's the era of fun. :)

I wouldn't put that much thought into that percentage...a lot of multiplatform games are selling 1 to 2 million this year. And some are even on last gen as well.

A lot of games considered successful are under 1% if you do the math.

For sure, and I think it’s probably still successful and profitable at that level of sales. My point is more that I’ve heard so many people talk about their disappointment in the current gen and wanting new original games rather than remakes or sequels.

AstroBot seems to me one of the best examples of something you can only get on a PS5 and is original. Why spend the cash on a PS5 and not take advantage of one of the few original fun games you cannot get anywhere else.

I pre-ordered this game and encouraged persons online to buy the game. Some reviewers also did the same. It is a bit disappointing to see that this game sold 1.5m copies. I wasn't expecting Helldivers 2 numbers but I was expecting around 5m copies.

Hopefully it will get a bumb when it gets nominated for GOTY.

It should be more than that but I still has the Holiday which should move a good amount of copies. It should hit 2mil at some point I’m sure which is around 1/5th of SpiderMan 2 sales. That’s pretty damn good for a smaller game with less recognition.
In an ideal world it would sell 10 million as well but casual gamers mainly buy the big AAA massively advertised games and that’s about it unfortunately.

I hope it continues to sell well because the love that was put into making this game was felt from the very first minute. The studio deserves all the praise it gets and hope they continue to make great games.

Really glad that it managed to atleast sell more than 1 million. That's good enough in my book. A game doesn't need to be a big hit in sales to be good. Something I wish Microsoft kept in mind in regards to Hifi Rush.

Too bad console war propaganda doesn't equate to sales. Now sony will probably shut down Team Asobi like they did Japan Studio. Then Nintendo can buy them cheap. Astro Bot would already be over 5 million in sales by now if it were on Switch. Same reason why sony now has to sell their exclusives on PC...
