Sony Skips 8K Label on PS5 Pro Box

Sony skips 8K label on PS5 Pro box, raising questions about 8K support as the console’s release date approaches.

Obscure_Observer200d ago

Well, at least they did it before the console hit the shelves.

lukasmain199d ago

Not really. They want it to align with the normal PS5 box. I'm sure there will still be the 8k option in GT. But honestly, 8k is not a huge selling point at all. Never was.

Neonridr199d ago

considering only a handful of TVs can even support that resolution, I'd say so.

TheNamelessOne199d ago

They still made a point to state certain games would support 8k. They consider it enough of a selling point to say as much.

XiNatsuDragnel199d ago

I think 8k is going to come probably ps6

JohnnyRambo199d ago

Unlikely unless you like low frame rates. Putting it on the original PS5 box was false advertising for a start, but lots of people fall for marketing rubbish instead of doing their own research first.

DarXyde199d ago

PSSR would have to be really good by then.

No one should be expecting a native 8k.

Einhander1972199d ago

There are already at least two 8k games GT7 and F1 2024, there will obviously be other games that offer the option.

I'm not sure this raises any questions, the label on the box has no effect on game development, the hardware itself is capable of supporting 8k. The more important thing here is that the console itself has a proper 8k upscaler (not talking about PSSR) so games that are made for 4k or less will look good on 8k screens.

interestingly DF stated that the 8k output on 8k screens was really sharp but I wonder if there is any real tangable downgrade viewing 4K content on an 8K set. To your question, I think the TV itself would be scaling the content up to 8K (when in 4k output mode). And when in 8K output mode the console would probably upscale 4K content just fine.

Michiel1989198d ago

upscaling is the downside but honestly the further we go, the less our eyes will be able to tell the difference

At the moment only the PC can do true 8K gaming, in any game but you need the GPU that can do it.

ZycoFox199d ago (Edited 199d ago )

Even so I wouldn't recommend it. I've seen a few people on YT look at big (ish) 8k screens and say the difference is minimal, like Linus, he said trees in the background looked a bit sharper and that was about it, and it cuts into performance big time.

Probably reaching diminishing returns, I don't doubt there's a difference but if it's tiny then it's almost pointless. It depends how close you sit to your screen as well, like I only went 4k 165hz within the last few years, it's only been since around then that GPUs can push frame rates well enough in demanding titles for that anyways. Clarity jump from 24" 1440p to 4k 27" is certainly there, not sure I'd say it was as big a jump from 1080p to 1440p but it's certainly very sharp.

Yeah we don’t have tech and infrastructure to send true 8k quality signals. It will takes years until that will get mainstream since even 4k still isn’t super popular
