wasant ps4 pro more of a 4k gaming console?

VenomUK216d ago

One of the things I'm most looking forward to on the PS5 Pro is Game Boost. There are a tonne of PS4 games that I still want to play and this will be able to boost the resolution and frame rate of games that don't have them locked.

I'm currently asking Google Gemini what is or isn't unlocked and it's got Bloodborne right as well as some others.

Cacabunga216d ago

PS4 pro had the Sony exclusives to show.. PS5Pro has cross gen and early releases..
when games start flowing we can talk about who scales best. For now PS4Pro wins hands down

jznrpg216d ago

@Cacabunga PS5 Pro isn’t even out yet and PS4 Pro had the rest of the generation to have those games. In 3 years if PS5 Pro doesn’t have games made for it, then you have a point.

Gamist2dot0215d ago

I'm still hopeful that Blue Point will release a remake of Bloodborne like Demon's Souls so I'm just leaving BB out. But, I know I will be testing a tone of old PS4 favorites on the PS5 Pro. Some of these PS4 games are still sealed in their packaging, purposely saved for the PS5 Pro - hahaha.

Einhander1972216d ago

Not really... PS4 Pro did use checkerboarding to offer increased resolutions and Sony talked about the improved image quality on 4k TV's.. PlayStations own games tended to be 1080 upscaled to 1440p with better lighting and post process.

Native 4k was what Microsoft was pushing, but looking back you can basically count the native 4k games on xbonex on your fingers, and those games all had to have really dialed back/baked in lighting and shadows.

Obscure_Observer216d ago

"Native 4k was what Microsoft was pushing, but looking back you can basically count the native 4k games on xbonex on your fingers, and those games all had to have really dialed back/baked in lighting and shadows."

False. The biggest and most advanced game of last generation A.K.A Red Dead Redemption 2 runs at NATIVE 4K resolution on Xbox One X vs 1080p checkerboarding upscaling on PS4 Pro to hit "4K" which looks worse than base PS4´s native 1080p resolution.

PS4 Pro version with its checkerboarding tech couldn´t even beat the freaking STADIA´s version of that game.

Xbox One X destroyed them all but the PC version for obvious reasons.

So don´t even try and compare those console because there´s a golf between the two. Xbox One X literally can render 4x faster than the PS4 Pro, so comparisons aren´t even funny.

Remember: No upscaling trickery will ever trump RAW POWER, period!

Einhander1972216d ago (Edited 216d ago )

I stand by my limited number of full 4k games. And as for upscaling, DLSS and PSSR have showed that they can in fact provide an image that is more stable and clear with textures that look better than native.

Keep in mind that is what AI upscaling does, that's why people are using AI upscaling to improve retro games, because it can provide better looking textures.

Oh and RDR2 definitely does not look worse on the Pro, I played it on both PS4 and Pro enhanced and it definitely looks better on Pro.. And Stadia is a PC version... just streamed.

badz149216d ago (Edited 216d ago )

@Obsecure

" ...vs 1080p checkerboarding upscaling on PS4 Pro to hit "4K" which looks worse than base PS4´s native 1080p resolution."

can you please stop spreading FUD for once in your life?? There are like 2 times more PS4 Pro out there than the Series X, and you think people are blind? please, just give 1...ONE REAL EVIDENCE that a PS4 Pro-enhanced game running worse than base PS4 version if you can find any!

CrimsonIdol216d ago

I had the PS4 Pro and the Xbox One X. Most Xbox One X games ran at or close to 4K. Many past games were patched to become 4K with little to no issues or input from the developers. Same definitely can't be said for the PS4 Pro.

"but looking back you can basically count the native 4k games on xbonex on your fingers"
https://www.xbox.com/en-US/...

unless your hands are that of some unspeakable Lovecraftian horror I think that's a lie.

RDR2 ran at 4K on XOX but on PS4 Pro (which unfortunately was the version I had until it released for PC) ran at this weird pixel doubling blocky resolution for PS4 Pro.

Einhander1972216d ago

CrimsonIdol

Apparently I should have limited my statement to clearly imply AAA, but whatever I guess when you pad out the list with Mega Man 11, Meow Motors, The Blobs Fight!, Q.U.B.E. 2 and all the other indies it's a list all right...

And I wasn't even making a comparison between the two, ok, xbonex was more powerful than PS4 Pro we all know that but who cares in 2024... I haven't used a PS4 in 4 years and in two weeks I am going to be using a PS5 Pro.

CrimsonIdol216d ago (Edited 216d ago )

@Eihander perhaps you should have limited your statement to something that's true rather than certifiably nonsense. You can pick all the smallest names on that list to try and discredit it but there's plenty of AAA games on there.

Knushwood Butt215d ago

I wouldn't mind checking me out some Meow Motors in 4K.

dveio216d ago

I've pre-ordered the Pro.

My (unintentional) first row backlog waiting:

Death Stranding, GT7, Ghost of Tsushima and Spiderman 1+MM+2.

I think it'll do.

DivineHand125215d ago (Edited 215d ago )

Good things come to gamers who wait, and those games have gotten better since they were initially released. I got Spiderman when it launched but didn't play it for 2 years later. I hope you have the remastered and not the original because the original is 30 fps.
Uncharted 4 was my first PS4 game, as it came bundled with the Slim, but I found it unplayable after completing the trilogy at 60 fps. I ended up playing the Legacy of Thieves collection on PS5 at 120 FPS.

I haven't completed Ghost of Tsushima as yet but let me give you some advice. Avoid going the completionist root, or you will risk being burned out. I completed every side quest, chaced every fox, wrote every Haiku and chaced every bird I came across. It started feeling like a chore after a while.

dveio215d ago

That's a pretty good advice.

I gotta admit that I am by nature more of a completionist - but this trait is luckily also able to fade away as soon as I notice it's becoming un-entertainingly repetitive.

glennhkboy214d ago

Hasn't some wise guy once said "who want to play old games"?..... I wonder where is that wise guy now.

Software_Lover216d ago

3-5x times ................... come on now. Stop it.

rippermcrip216d ago

The question was horribly worried and the answer was pointless.

The question should have been "how much would a comparable PC cost?". But instead they just asked how much a maxed out PC cost, which is kind of a stupid question.

Bathyj216d ago

It wasn't a horrible question it just wasn't a question you're thinking it is. He was specifically talking about the game what is the PS5 pro version of the game like compared to a maxed out PC version? It's not asking what the PS5 pro is like compared to a max out PC in general. he's talking specifically about their game.

nihis216d ago

It's not an inaccurate statement, a 4080 costs around $1100-1300 and a 4090 costs $2100-2300 and that's just the graphics cards.

$2100 aka 3x isn't even that much for a high end PC build and $2800 aka 4x can easily be blown past.

Eonjay216d ago

For maxed PC? I mean if you really want everything maxed out at high refresh rates at 4K then easily. If, for whatever reason, you need this all in native resolution, then you can easily get to 4x @ $2800.

If you want to get to PS5 Pro levels you can realistically get there in 2x @ $1400.

NotoriousWhiz215d ago

Does that 2x include 2tb of storage that matches or exceeds ps5 pro storage speeds?

badz149216d ago

3x is plausible, but 5x is definitely too much. It's unrealistic, but so are people saying a $700 PC can easily outperform the Pro and those saying the Pro should be $600 max.

Software_Lover215d ago

I would say between 2-3x. Anything above that is overkill if we are just trying to make a comparative machine. What's crazy is if you bought the original ps5, and you are also going to buy the pro, you could have just purchased/built 1 PC a few years ago for around the price of both and still have a better machine.

Not knocking the PS5 or the Xbox Series, as I was a console only gamer for most of my life going back to the Atari. I just don't understand how can people continue to make these claims that PC is 5x's more expensive. It definitely isn't now if we are going to get new upgraded console iterations every few years.

Can’t wait to play:

Dragon’s Dogma 2
Silent Hill 2
Wukong: Black Myth
FF Rebirth

On PS5 Pro!

Traecy216d ago

I have all those games as well, can't wait to play them all on the PS5 Pro.

womij216d ago (Edited 216d ago )

Yea, it's going to be great, Pro can't get here soon enough.

Popsicle216d ago

Rebirth has been on sitting on my shelf for a long time waiting for the Pro. Can’t wait to start playing it in a little over a 2 weeks.

On a side note, is Wukong getting a Pro patch or will it benefit from boost mode in any way? I haven’t seen any info regarding a patch yet.

Cockney215d ago

I'll be playing all those games come christmas on my launch ps5, its good to be a grandad

Hmm ok sure it definitely can be compared , most people that would want a nice pc aren't getting it just for gaming alone ,. better customizing , video editing , mods , free online , web access and much more . Hell the media apps on consoles are inferior to pc counterparts . Not worth the upgrade knowing ps6 is probably 2-3 years away if you own a base model . It also begs the question on how much the PS6 will cost $800, 900 ... 1000 ?!? The disparity in the future on whether to get a next gen PS or pc will become less for a lot of people given the lack of true exclusives compared to previous generations . Those few exclusives can wait knowing remastered and upgraded versions will be released later on pc or ps6 pro

robtion216d ago

I agree, however, people often have a a significant game library tied to a platform. For example I have somewhere around 500 ps4/5 games so if I swap to PC I lose access to those. Would hate to think what it would cost to re-purchase those on Steam.

I would like a good PC but that is one of the main barrier for me making the switch.

Miraak82 216d ago

I have a large amount of games on PS too and it's not like I'd get rid of my ps5 but it won't stop me from playing new gaming experiences on PC when I eventually get one. I don't need to relive older experiences on PC going forward or tie myself to one platform just because I also happen to own it on PS too. If you ask me I'm almost certain basically every game with be cross platform between ps5/6 . I still have my snes, genesis, ps1/2/3/4 so getting a PC won't effect those games or how I play them. Honestly the main reason I've always stuck PS was because I'm a FF fanboy but if better versions are just gonna come out on PC or Pro version later on then there is nothing directly keeping me tied to the PS ecosystem

Peter Molyneux recalls how Project Milo, the Kinect game with revolutionary promise, died a death

Vapourware can end up being the stuff of legend, like Rockstar's Agent, Star Wars 1313, or StarCraft: Ghost. Without ever seeing the light of day, these games never risked the possibility of being played and forgotten, and instead live on forever as the subjects of lengthy YouTube essays.

Still, Molyneux's most notable lost game (or tech demo, depending on who you asked at the time) was arguably Project Milo.

I can see the potential of the kinect hardware... its rather impressive tech, but it was just not meant to be for gaming. If anything, MS had a huge missed opportunity to have used it for the AR/VR projects.

S2Killinit1d 15h ago

Missed opportunity? They lied. It was the biggest lie in gaming history.

merlox1d 10h ago

You can use the Kinect as an SLS camera for paranormal investigations. So it wasn’t a complete failure.

It was built on lies Peter...you know this.

isarai2d ago

Bro that thing NEVER existed, what we got was a concept video

Knushwood Butt2d ago

"Unfortunately, as we were developing Milo, so the Kinect device was being developed. And they realised that the device that Alex Kipman first showed off would cost $5,000 for consumers to buy.

"So they cost-reduced that device down to such a point, where the field-of-view...I think it was a minuscule field-of-view. In other words, it could only just see what's straight in front of you."

Hmm, exactly what tech was in it, that was cut, affected the development? It was only ever interpreting visual and audio inputs right? The xbox was processing those inputs.

Nor do I see how the field of view thing is relevant to the discussion.

isarai2d ago

Exactly! Tf kinda BS statement was that? i don't really see how fov is relevant at all, since when do you move all around a room while talking/interacting to someone?

Amplitude1d 11h ago (Edited 1d 11h ago )

This is entirely untrue. There was never a 5000 dollar Kinect prototype that could somehow use a wider field of view to scan and import generated in-game items and advance AI by over a decade. Anybody that fell for this was a stupid moron child, myself included. Anybody that falls for this lie now is a stupid moron child who doesn't realize that these people *only* know how to lie.

Need at least a few years for a bigger game like that and that’s probably not enough.

anast3d ago

They wanted something cheap.

RaidenBlack2d ago

Now you can get, what Obsidian went thru,
Had to create New Vegas within 1.5 years.
They had to scrap some ideas + there was limitations of console hardware as well (the strip area in the game, etc).
Hence, I say, we better get a New Vegas Redone than just a straight remaster, as was leaked.

Christopher2d ago

Todd ego too big for that, IMHO.

Azurite3d ago

Remasters can take longer than that.

Dandizzle3d ago

not true, look up star wars first assault.

ZeekQuattro2d ago

Sounds about right. They were rushed while making the second game. Not hard to imagine that trend continued with it's ill fated follow-up.

1nsomniac2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

I actually really liked the first Battlefront. Its charm was that it was so simple and basic. It felt like a really well made modernised old school shooter. Ignoring all the COD style BS that took over all other games.

I absolutely loved Battlefront 2 as well but I enjoyed Battlefront 1 for its simplicity.
